Why Diablo 4 Nightmare Dungeons Aren't So Great Right Now

In Diablo 4, the Nightmare Dungeon system promises dynamic end-game content through increasing challenge and rewards. Over the first launch week though, the community has found several normal dungeons that can be farmed in order to acquire character experience and great loot much more quickly. To disincentivize normal dungeon farming in Diablo 4's endgame, Blizzard continuously nerfed experience gains in and mob density of these dungeons.

However, farming Nightmare Dungeons still isn't the best end-game activity to farm experience and loot - much to the dismay of the Diablo community. We collected the major community pain points about Nightmare Dungeons and possible solutions to shine a light on some of the glaring issues behind Blizzard's approach to end-game farming in Diablo 4.
Nightmare Dungeons don't always drop the best loot
While the interaction between item power and monster level hasn't been wholly demystified yet, it is safe to say that Nightmare Dungeons don't reward the best loot over a certain amount of time.
Rewards for a Tier 31 Nightmare Dungeon as a Level 84 player slaying Level 85 monsters -
the average Item Power should be much higher.
The higher amount of monsters slain in normal dungeon runs over a certain amount of time alone causes way more legendary and unique drops, thus increasing the overall chance to find that "gg item" even from monsters on your level. Apart from that, the "end of dungeon" reward from Nightmare Dungeons isn't rewarding at all because it seems to draw from the same general item power pool as normal monster loot drops.
Solution
: Significantly Increase average item power of Nightmare Dungeon rewards and loot dropped from monsters.
Nightmare Dungeon Sigil drops and crafting are randomized
The current definition of the Nightmare Dungeon system dictates that players have to visit different dungeons. Both sigil crafting and sigil drops choose from the same Nightmare Dungeon pool, which includes a ton of dungeons with group- and also solo-unfriendly layouts.
Solution:
Make sigil crafting at least somewhat deterministic through region-based crafting, for example.
Travelling between Nightmare Dungeons feels like a waste of time
While certainly flavorful in theory, visiting different Nightmare Dungeons all over Sanctuary isn't effective compared to running the same normal dungeon with minimal downtime.
Solution:
Fix normal dungeon reset mechanics to increase between normal dungeon runs or incentivize travel between Nightmare Dungeons.
Some Nightmare Dungeon affixes slow down gameplay
Affixes promise dynamic gameplay in theory but can also cause a lot of headaches, especially combined with the aforementioned dungeon layout issue. For example, the Lightning Storm affix disrupts effective group play while posing a constant threat to life and experience per hour.
Solution
: Adjust affix damage scaling in lower levels and certain dungeon/affix combinations.
Normal Dungeons scale up to Level 95
For many community members, the fact that normal dungeons scale up to Level 95 is the most significant pain point. Yes, you could run Nightmare Dungeons which inhabit monsters way above your level - however, the maximum bonus experience you will get is 25% more for monsters up to 3 levels higher.
Right now, you can only craft sigils within various level brackets.
As a result, running Nightmare Dungeons would only ever be able to compete if your sigils constantly hit the exact Nightmare Dungeon Tier that spawns monster 3 levels above your level.
Solution
: Lower the maximum level on normal dungeon scaling and let players craft the exact sigil tier they want.
Leveling your Glyphs in Nightmare Dungeons doesn't offer enough incentive
Leveling your Paragon Glyphs and improving your Paragon Board is the main tool of end-game character progression in Diablo 4.
Upgrading your glyphs is important - but getting levels quickly is much more important!
However, the simple act of leveling up and, as a result, getting more Paragon Points and access to better gear quickly not only feels better but disincentivizes Glyph leveling through Nightmare Dungeons.
Solution
: Increase early-level Paragon Glyph experience gain and bonuses gained per level.
Fortunately, it appears that the Diablo 4 development team has been acknowledging a lot of this community feedback. As a response, Blizzard has scheduled a

in order to address some of these concerns.
