Its carvings fresh and deep, this standing stone depicts a human woman. Her hand is outstretched as if trying to command Basalteous. Beside her is another figure resembling you.

Eesh, that's actually kind of chilling. Her dialogue was so cartoonish that it was clear something bad was going to happen to her, but "being turned into a still-conscious standing stone for eons" wasn't on my bingo card. Makes the other standing stones in the cave more unnerving, too.

There are four or five of them, altogether. They are a 'clickable' dull grey. When you click them they'll turn shiny blue. Quest is done after you've placed all of them and talked to Basalteous. (who only appears after gems have been placed).

Natalia did nothing wrong.
She was "punished" for wanting a rare/unique gem pattern to sell to rich folk so she could retire early.
Our characters do this crap all the time!
Ugh, this is one of their worst quests since Shadowlands nonsense.
I hope they rectify it later but sadly I have a feeling she's just a throwaway NPC.

One of her dialogues after placing a gem is "Didn't you hear? Greed is good!" or something like that. Which is a reference to the cheat code in Warcraft 3 that would give you resources, which is itself a reference to the movie Wall Street (1987).

Basalteous's dialogue is worse than it appears; it says not to covet other peoples' natural talents, which is very "know your place, because if you were meant to be good at something, then you would already be good at it."

Add that to the horror of the villagers letting a stranger get enslaved for an infinite length of time by a self-important psychopath that thinks it's teaching a valuable lesson--one that's completely useless because the person it's torturing won't even be able to apply said lesson, and the cartoonishly selfish nature of Natalia's dialogue, and I have to wonder if the quest writer actually thinks Basalteous is in the right.

I hate quests like this, not because it's "dark" or because it "teaches a lesson", but because we don't have a choice but to do the quest, even if our character is the type that wouldn't go along with it. I hate that after almost 20 years, WoW is still so one-sided and two-dimensional when it comes to questing. Your actions have no consequences, your reactions have no bearing on the world around you, in the end, nothing bad happens to your character. Basalteous was obviously unhappy with what we were doing, but I did all the work and Natalia is the one to get the punishment. Some may argue it was her vanity that did her in, but she literally didn't do anything, our characters did. We were also rewarded for this quest. And what was our reward? A jewelry design that isn't even warbound so we can send it to alts. Literally given a gift for essentially killing an innocent person.

I made a post on a quest in Dragonflight and I'm going to pull an excerpt that really puts into words how I feel about this:

"My hands are covered in the blood of my enemies. They are also covered in the blood of the innocent, whether by accident or simply me just being there. My hands will never, ever truly be clean."

And just think, if we had never helped she might not have turned to stone. Kind of reminds me of a dark souls quest.

Now....I love this game, been playing since vanilla.

But this quest is a prime example of how Blizzard stretches everything to extend playtime, even by a few seconds. Instead of having you go from stone to stone that are next to each other they pick the longest path to place each gem in front of each stone.

This adds about 3 seconds to this quest and about $34.22 to their revenue over the next year.

Is there a respawn cycle for this? I'm in the cave and there's absolutely nothing on the ground.

Natalia is missing from the cave. I completed this quest on my main (who is not JC) during Early Access before week #1. Now I go there with my JC alt to get the recipe but she's not there anymore. What should I do to get the recipe?

Checking the completion quest above on the JC toon results as "false".
