I'm a female and I often find myself leading the raid. However, most guilds seem to be led by men. I often tend to be straight forward and assertive, two qualities praised in men and shunned in women. So it's interesting. There's really no question. We know there is still not gender equality in the world (or on Azeroth) where power and respect are concerned. When one wishes to fling an insult to a man all someone has to do is imply he's a woman, or acting like a woman.Even the prominent female leaders in World of Warcraft are portrayed as soft and submissive. Jaina is a sentimental whiner who can't move past her past with Arthas. Tyrande is almost nonexistent in the conflicts, in fact most people probably don't know who she is.
I leads my raids. I am male, and you can make your own assumptions about my temper by looking at my profile name.

1 Community member is female, rest of the guild is fully males.
Something else I would like to add.I believe the tanks are in the best position to raid lead for obvious and not so-obvious reasons. I do my best to raid lead while healing, this involves watching what everyone else is doing to discover who is making mistakes and on what mechanics so I can correct it, but it takes away from my focus on healing and occasionally get very close to losing people. The tanks have more freedom since they are in control of the boss/adds and can focus more on what's going on around them, giving instructions to the raid accordingly. A great DPS is likely to be intensely focused on maximizing their damage (Watching DoTs, cooldowns, runes, procs, etc) while trying not to die, healers following the mechanics while keeping the raid alive and saving people who screw up and drop dangerously low, but tanks have less stress in those areas once he has control of the mobs.
My raids are led by a male/female combo. =]
I have been lead by both and honestly I have no problem being led by either as long as the person knows the fights and can explain and handle them well. When I was leading raids I had a female guildie that helped me organize the teams and co-lead raids with me. We are a pretty laid back easy going guild though and everyone gets along pretty well so raiding isn't a stressful thing nor in my mind should it ever be.
My current raid leader is a woman. Most of my past raid leaders have been men, but a former female officer used to raid lead occasionally too.I do it from time to time, but only if there's no one else available to do it. It's not my gender, I'm just bad at it.
The successful ones in terms of attendance and outcomes we've had have been female. The male one's we've had have been very selfish - in both their expectations of the raid as a whole and loot etc for themselves.I've found the females to be harsh but fair. All have had a good understanding of the raid as a whole, haven't gone stupid about loot and have the patience. They also have the balls to put their foot down but in a way that comes across diplomatically.I have one exception to this though, a great male who shows the same traits... so I'm not sure how gender specific those traits are. But I've seen them more in females (and those females were 25+ years of age).
I'm in a guild where the leader is male as well as all the officers (myself included). I do know that some of the women in the guild have been offered an officer's position, but they turned it down because they didn't want to micromanage a lot of "type A" personalities. As far as capabilities between male and female raid leaders go, gender doesn't matter to me. Give me someone who is capable, knowledgeable, and deserving of my respect without having to (I added emphasis to a word that is generally used in place of "demanding"):
I have raided with both female and male RLer's. I much preferred the male leader. The female was pushy, thought she knew the instances much, much better than anyone so was not open to suggestions, despite repeated wipes, which I found disappointing. I even gave up raiding for a while after raiding several times with her and not accomplishing anything other than constantly shelling out for repairs and feeling totally bummed out about my skills. The female was my first time raiding and was my Guild Raid leader whom I had total confidence in up until raiding with her. After a disagreement with her and she left the guild, I ran with a male from another Guild and was totally blown away by the extreme opposite experience! He was much calmer, much more skilled at relaying the information and relaxed at the thought of 'noobs' and wiping. It was great and since then we have formed a 'sister-guild' type of relationship for raiding purposes. I have also started preparing, organizing, leading and running my own raids. I tend to form them, give info out and then turn the raid over to someone who has more experience but, I always have the bottom line say so should something occur that needs to be 'ruled on'. I will also say that, I am an older female, in fact I am a Grandmother, I am GM of my Guild, I DPS on my main, tank on my DK and have several alts and alt guilds. *smile* I rule my Guild like my family however, I do have Co-Guild leaders and it tends to be like a democracy, up to a point. My strongest co-leader is a female. My 'enforcer' is a female. My guild is at this point 50/50 females and males. So, far, I have not had a man leave due to me being female. I have kicked plenty for being 'men' however....that's another issue.
I'm a male raid leader and guild leader. Unlike a lot of the posts here say, I'm a softy when it comes to guild management, and unless it's fails on pulls same goes for raids. :<As for preference, I've had one third of my raid leaders female, the other two thirds male. I honestly prefer female, because most of the time, they're friendly and get the job done.
Lots of husband wife combo's leading raids, all my guild leaders have been male though But that has to do with my server our server is quite male focused
