For a few months, my raid was lead by a female. She did awesome job and always remained calm. Dunno if there's a a difference in temper between the genders, just telling from my own experience. In my last guild, we had a male leader (and in all other guilds I've been in), EVERYONE of them lost their temper after a few wipes, whether they went raging or not varied.

I find that the only people who have an issue with gender are the immature guys (not necessary adolescent) who don't like taking crap from any girl. I'm an Officer in my guild, but some guys refuse to listen when I try to be reasonable with them. It's hard to try and argue with a guy who resorts to petty below-the-belt remarks, only because I happen to be female. As for raidleading, I've never tried doing so because from day 1 I've had issues with the ML system - somehow I can't assign loot to people, so I steer clear from raidleading. I'm sure, though, that in my guild you have 3 kinds of people: the ones who'd just listen and wouldn't care about me being female, the ones who'd listen but make sure to tease me or make remarks bordering the inappropriate, and the ones I mentioned earlier and who'd hate a girl telling them what to do. Should I take up raidleading, then I'd wager that the latter group would be around 10%. I'm not sure, of course, but I think this amount may be higher on US servers (I'm European). From personal experience, so far I've only ever had males leading my raid (unless there was a Vent-less pug and it never was spoken out whether the RL was a female, then it could've occured). This isn't because they're better in leading than females are, but because so far the girls I've raided with or had in my guild didn't show an interest in taking the reigns.
Our GM and RL is a female. She is really good under pressure, and rules with an iron fist. If you whine, your out, if u make the same mistake, your out. She is a real hammer, but it works. If you mouth off, you will get castrated.
If you haven't already, you should really check out the work of Nick Yee. He's been studying gamers for years, starting with a college project he did on Everquest that eventually led to a career. I don't know him but have been a subject all the while and have followed the results off and on, and they're fascinating. See: www.nickyee.com
I haven't read every single post however I think there is 1 thing you can derive from all of this. Whether or not your GL/RL is a male or female isn't the important criteria. What does appear to be the critical factor is whether or not this person is intelligent and mature. From a sociological perspective, I would be interested in the overall gender and even age distribution differences between servers.
I think what people will find if they take all of the responses is that the gender ratio is pretty reasonable where there are more men than women which matches what is in the server population. What people may miss is that it isn't the gender of the leadership that counts but it is their temperament and the "chemistry" the leadership has. If the leadership enjoys working with each other and the raid then everyone is happier and performing better. As a side topic, although tanks and healers make up a minority of the raid composition, I won't be surprised to find out that tanks and healers make up a major part of the leaders. That may not be that surprising either since it is the tanks and healers are often forced to have "awareness" and can comment on the how and why the raid wiped out.
my raid leader is female, but she isnt as calm as her male counterpart the guild leader.its funny when some ppl made the same mistake over and over and over agian, she almost sounded like the dude on the onyxia moar dots clip :Palthough fair enough she's quite pleasent usely if you dnt keep failing on the same simple thing.(for some reason she hated my guts in ulduar, im still wondering why :P )
The leader of my regular raid team is male. The leader of our guild's other raid group is female. Our 25-man raid group leader varies - sometimes male, sometimes female; it just depends on who is available and who wants to lead.Gender does not play a major role in someone's capability as a raid leader; it may result in differences of leadership style, but as long as that style is competent and knowledgeable, then it is a successful method.
