I thought this might have been a Wowhead's way of saying "Hey, I found something awesome, check it out!" But it was really saying "Hey, we need the cash for advertising, let's shove this in your face!"By that I mean the blog post that doesn't have any advertisement > random banner pops up for the same product > full home page for the product.If i'm off base then I apologize it just feels very forced vs. the usual banner / home page advertising (which is more voluntary then this method for people like me that will read all of Wowhead's blog posts because i'm a lemming).Just me? Not a QQ comment, purely giving my 2 cents on this new advertisement method.
I think this is a great recommendation by WoWhead!I'm using two 80GB x25's for my OS and WOW on a 3 GHz Q6600 (that's probably the first intel quadcore to give you an estimate on it's age). And I must say it's crazy fast, load times are really short, especially with my minimalist approach to addons.For anyone looking for the speed of an SSD but the price per Gb of a HDD I'd say the Seagate Momentus XT is a really nice choice. It's a 7200 rpm drive with 4 Gb of solid state memory included, as so called hybrid drive. It's priced slightly above " regular" hard drives.I'm running a single one on another rig and the load times on standard operation are really good. This is a home build Intel Atom system so it's not blazing fast processor -wise and I don't use it for WoW so I can't comment on it's performance in -game.I've read some reviews on running these in RAID 0 and it's quite fast compared to 'classic' HDDs. The Momentus XT comes in 250, 320 and 500GB. I'd go for either 320 or 500 because as far as I know they have an extra platterKeep in mind both the intel x25 (and many other SSD's for that mater) and the Momentus XT are 2,5" drives. This might cause you some headaches building them in to your rig if you don't have a 3,5" bracket. It's a big plus for people who want a really fast and energy efficient drive for their notebook.
Regarding the home page ad, did Intel marketing provide the background with 'responsiveness' misspelled?Please don't mistake my question as an attempt to troll. I'm simply one of those people who believes presentation should matter.
SSD's have one downside though, every computer without one will feel sluggish in even the most basic operations (tabbing out of WoW to change your music, visit wowhead, things like that). These things became instant when I added the SSDs.When I, for instance, tab out of WoW to do these things on my girlfriend's PC (which is slightly higher specced with a more modern quadcore at 3GHz and fast DDR3 memory) it feels sluggish as hell.I bought SSDs in just about every computer I use. My gaming rig, my Macbook pro, my low power atom pc/fileserver has a hybrid drive. I bought one for my father's laptop and my brother's netbook. I guess my girlfriend's PC is next in line :).Really loving Solid State drives for the OS & applications but for my storage I still use 1TB Samsung Spinpoints.Last thing to keep in mind: On a modern OS like Windows 7 or Mac OS X you will see a bigger performance increase then on Windows XP. Benchmarks on several hardware sites show this and I can confirm it from my own experience.@Carukia, the OCZ agility is also a great reccomendation, it appears to be really good.Still, any SATA SSD can't hold a candle to PCIe SSD's, I just wish they dropped in price.
I have two SSDs in my PC.They're set up in a RAID 0.Though I suspect trying to RAID them might be overkill as these things are pretty fast as it is.They're pretty fast; it makes noticeable difference when loading/zoning in WoW and I've yet to be the last to load in Starcraft II.It doesn't make things instant, and it won't magically fix a poorly coded program (e.g. Adobe Photoshop will still take 5 seconds to free up enough memory for a new 1px by 1px image).But for us speed freaks it is definitely a little faster ^_^;;
Not everyone has a god-mode computer like you.Secondly, the implication of your post made me believe that you were saying the SSD caused a 50 second load.Thirdly, your "opinion" as you so put it is invalidated by your lack of proper post structuring and generally detrimental comments on the object described by the blog in question. Just keep that opinion to yourself.
I have been doing further research into SSD's and I found an interesting article on AnandTech that talks about some of the technology behind OCZ's SSD offerings in comparison to the Intel drives. It really did have a lot of useful information, and leads me to believe that I would not be disappointed by using a SSD to run my OS and games. However, the promise of new and improved techology right around the corner is enough to keep me from purchasing anything now.
