Blizzard has announced that they are expanding their World of Warcraft Combat Team, hiring for three new positions. It is important to note that these positions are additions to the Combat Team, not replacements for existing roles.
Class/Combat Designer - World of Warcraft
This job involves designing/implementing/maintaining player spells and abilities in World of Warcraft. We want creative people who focus on delivering the fantasy of our classes through gameplay.
— Brian Holinka, Lead Combat Designer
Class/Combat Designer, Tuning - World of Warcraft
While this job performs similar duties as the previous post, we are looking for an additional person to understand and maintain the underlying math that drives WoW (e.g. player and creature stats/scaling)
— Brian Holinka, Lead Combat Designer
Game Designer, PvP Content - World of Warcraft
This position is primarily focused on creating PvP-focused content, like Arenas, Battlegrounds, World PvP events, and what might come next.
— Brian Holinka, Lead Combat Designer
The open positions are all on Team 2, the World of Warcraft Combat Team, which overlooks the concepts, design, and implementation of player abilities in WoW. Brian Holinka, Lead Combat Designer for World of Warcraft and head of the team that is hiring these positions, has drawn attention to this announcement.
He goes on to recognize that the atmosphere around working at Blizzard is troubling currently, but that his goal is to be "part of the solution," and to "have as diverse a candidate pool as possible." Currently there is one position open for each of the three roles on offer, but when pressed about whether there could be multiple hires for each role he responded, "Plan was 1 for each but we’ll see."
This is very encouraging in light of the events and revelations of the last week, and certainly is a move in the right direction. There is no doubt that there is a great deal of change happening within Blizzard and this gives hope that this change will be positive for the employees of Blizzard, the players, and the game itself.
