Updated for the latest patch.
Artifacts in Battle for Azeroth
As of June 26th, completing the quest
The Power in Our Hands
will further empower your Artifact Weapon, enabling all traits and at least
Concordance of the Legionfall
level 75, further increasing in power over time until the Battle for Azeroth pre-expansion patch.
Therefore, only the Netherlight Crucible recommendations are relevant on this guide page leading up to BFA, as you already receive all Artifact Traits by default. This makes content easier to complete, especially some
content going away
such as
Ahead of the Curve
and
Mage Tower Challenges
.
In the
BFA pre-patch
, your Artifact Traits will be removed, and relics will simply increase the item level of your artifact weapon. However, many artifact traits are returning as talents or azerite powers in Battle for Azeroth and we have a compiled a
full list you can read here
.
Moving forward in Battle for Azeroth, you will still be able to acquire the Artifact Weapon which will mainly interest transmog collectors for the appearances. Learn how to unlock all appearances in BFA with our

Tier 2 Traits - Light & Shadow
In your second tier, you will be presented with one of two options. You should ideally be picking the best option that leads to the best Tier 3 trait. I have provided Item Level values for the different traits going down, and you should add this value to the trait that you can combine it with to find the optimal path. With the opening of
Antorus, the Burning Throne
, it is now possible to obtain
Insignia of the Grand Army
, which increases the potency of your Tier 2 Crucible traits by 50%. It might be a really strong legendary if you are lucky with Netherlight Crucible rolls!
5-6 Item Level Value Traits
Murderous Intent
- Increases Versatility by 1500 while
Concordance of the Legionfall
is active. (single point - extra are worth 4~)
Shocklight
- Increases your Critical Strike rating by 1500 while
Concordance of the Legionfall
is active. (single point - extra are worth 4~)
Light Speed
- (Great in AoE) - Increases Haste and Movement Speed by 500. (Great in AoE)
Master of Shadows
- (Great in AoE) - Increases Mastery and Avoidance by 500.
3-4.5 Item Level Value Traits
Torment the Weak
- Your damaging spells and abilities have a chance to deal 80000 Shadow damage over 15 seconds. This effect stacks up to 3 times, and scales with Haste & Critical Strike.
Secure in the Light
- Your damaging spells and abilities have the chance to deal 101000 additional Holy damage. Your healing spells and abilities have a chance to grant Holy Bulwark, absorbing 101000 damage over 10 sec, scaling with Haste.
Infusion of Light
- Your damaging spells and abilities have the chance to deal 101000 additional Holy damage. Your healing spells and abilities have a chance to heal for 101000, scaling with Haste.
Shadowbind
- Your spells have a chance to deal 200000 Shadow damage and heal you for the same amount, scaling with Haste.
Chaotic Darkness
- Your spells have a chance to deal 60000 to 300000 Shadow damage and heal you for the same amount, scaling with Haste.
2 Item Level Value Traits
Dark Sorrows
- (Great in AoE) - Your damaging spells and abilities have a chance to apply Sorrow to the target, making it explode for 133100 damage to all enemies around it after 8 seconds, scaling with Haste.
0 Item Level Value Defensive Traits
Refractive Shell
- Your spells and abilities have the chance to cause Refractive Shell, absorbing 300000 damage. Lasts 10 sec.
Light's Embrace
- Taking damage has a chance to grant you Light's Embrace, restoring 45500 health over 6 sec. Light's Embrace may stack up to 5 times.
Tier 3 Traits - Relic Traits
This is slightly different to the relic section found at the bottom, as this is assuming much higher gear that can find more fixed values. As such, specific values that you can use to combine with the aforementioned Tier 2 values are below:
Wind Strikes
- 2.5-3
Crashing Hammer
- Single Target:0.5/AoE focused: 3
Gathering of the Maelstrom
- 2-2.5
Wind Surge
- 2-2.5
Weapons of the Elements
- 2
Forged in Lava
- 1
Gathering Storms
- 0.5/Priority Targets: 3
Artifact Weapon:
Doomhammer
Active Ability
Equipping Doomhammer grants you the ability
Doom Winds
, which causes all auto-attacks for a small window of time to proc an empowered version of
Windfury Weapon
.
Artifact Traits
1 Point Golden Traits:
Doom Wolves
: Your wolves now take on Lightning/Frost/Fire elements and deal extra elemental attacks.
Molten Weapon
: Nuke + DoT,
Icy Edge
: Nuke,
Crackling Surge
: 50% wolf damage.
Lightning wolf is the weaker of the 3 but the other two elements are amazingly strong and this trait on its own makes the otherwise lackluster
Feral Spirit
cooldown incredibly powerful. Best trait to rush.
Unleash Doom
: proc caused by
Stormstrike
that causes damaging attacks to deal extra Nature/Fire damage for 6 sec.
Also a great trait, and adds an extra damage proc to
Stormstrike
, alongside working with
Stormflurry
for additional chances.
Doom Vortex
:
Lava Lash
/
Overcharge
has a chance to unleash a fiery vortex for AoE damage within 3 yards.
Very weak, and underperforms even against 3 point traits. Should be avoided until the very end of the path.
1 Point Major Traits:
Alpha Wolf
: After using
Crash Lightning
Feral Spirit
will use AoE attacks for 8 sec.
Turns the otherwise weak ST oriented CD of
Feral Spirit
into a fantastic burst AoE cooldown, worth getting ASAP as it's on the way to deeper traits and only one point.
Raging Storms
:
Stormbringer
also increases the damage of your next
Stormstrike
by 25%.
Increases the synergy with mastery and the burst significantly from our big nuke, very strong trait. Also is needed to work toward
Unleash Doom
, but is very much ST oriented.
Stormflurry
:
Stormstrike
has a 20% chance to deal damage an additional time for 40% damage, and can trigger off itself.
The extra hits can generate anything a normal
Stormstrike
can (other than Maelstrom Weapon's MP gen). Is a strong increase to our primary damage source in ST.
4 Point Relic Traits:
Gathering Storms
:
Crash Lightning
increases
Stormstrike
damage by up to 8% per target hit.
Feeds AoE into increased ST damage/burst, very very strong talent if there is any cleave.
Wind Strikes
:
Stormbringer
grants up to 12% increased attack speed for 6 seconds after triggering.
Free extra Maelstrom from auto hits with extra opportunities to generate
Windfury Weapon
and
Stormbringer
.
Spiritual Healing
: Increases
Healing Surge
healing by up to 40%.
Free extra self healing. Also is required to get to other very important traits so is mandatory on the path.
Elemental Healing
:
Astral Shift
heals you for up to 40% of max HP over 15 sec.
Adds a little extra self healing to your personal CD. Can be very useful while soloing and in dungeons to deal with passive damage sources, is required to get to the strong traits on the right side so is also mandatory.
Spirit of the Maelstrom
: Being in
Ghost Wolf
during combat generates up to 20 Maelstrom every 2 seconds.
Can have fringe uses soloing or during encounters when you need to move with
Ghost Wolf
, but generally is a weak trait.
Forged in Lava
: Increases Lava Lash damage by up to 13%.
Increase to our Maelstrom spending filler, its value is increased slightly by
Hot Hand
if taken, but is unremarkable and left until late.
Weapons of the Elements
: Up to 13% increased
/
/
/
damage.
Increases the direct damage portions of the spells affected (but not the imbues) but contributes a good amount to overall damage.
Wind Surge
: Up to 32% increased
Windfury Weapon
damage.
Interacts well with the Artifact ability
Doom Winds
& increases our shorter burst cooldown value.
Gathering of the Maelstrom
:
/
generates an up to 4 additional Maelstrom.
Has average value as extra Maelstrom is useful. Has extra power with
as it helps to fill out gaps caused by resource starvation.
Recommended build path
Gathering Storms
Wind Strikes
Alpha Wolf
Spiritual Healing
Doom Wolves
Stormflurry
Elemental Healing
Raging Storms
Spirit of the Maelstrom
Unleash Doom
Weapons of the Elements
Wind Surge
Forged in Lava
Doom Vortex
Gathering of the Maelstrom
Earthshattering Blows
The path you should move between when building up your artifact, the path you should take is the following:
7.2 Trait path
7.2 adds additional traits after reaching 35 following the introduction quest to the Broken Shore. This includes a base damage increase, a new relic trait, a new one point trait and a new golden trait. Currently the ideal option is rushing straight to the new golden, and then filling out stronger relic traits from the old tree, and finally filling out until you reach the new paragon trait
Concordance of the Legionfall
.
New Artifact Traits
1 Point Golden Traits:
Lashing Flames
: Your
damage causes the target to take 2% increased damage from your next
Lava Lash
. This effect stacks up to 99, and is a debuff applied to the target.
Whilst this limits target switching, it is still a powerful pure single target option. It also increases the power of the legendary
Akainu's Absolute Justice
and the talent
Hot Hand
.
1 Point Major Traits:
Winds of Change
: Your
Windfury Weapon
attacks generate 2 additional Maelstrom.
A solid increase to Maelstrom generation, and smooths out resource generation whilst reduces the reliance on
casts to sustain your resource.
4 Point Relic Traits:
Crashing Hammer
: Increases both the direct and splash damage of
Crash Lightning
by up to 20%.
A flat AoE damage increase to your primary AoE tool. Has no real applications in single target but is mandatory to move on to the two other strong traits.
The ideal path moving on in the patch then is as follows:
Crashing Hammer
Winds of Change
Lashing Flames
Wind Strikes
Forged in Lava
Weapons of the Elements
Wind Surge
Gathering of the Maelstrom
Gathering Storms
Choice between utility:
Spiritual Healing
,
Elemental Healing
and
Spirit of the Maelstrom
Concordance of the Legionfall
Relics
When considering relics for the Enhancement Shaman Artifact, item level is generally your go to choice. However, some traits have additional value currently (note, below will reference the additional weapon item level it grants, not the item level of the relic itself):
Wind Strikes
is worth up to 3 additional weapon Ilvls depending on gear and is highly desirable.
Forged in Lava
,
Weapons of the Elements
,
Wind Surge
and
Gathering of the Maelstrom
are all worth between 1-2 additional weapon item levels.
If using the legendary
Akainu's Absolute Justice
,
Forged in Lava
can gain additional value due to the additional focus in the rotation toward
Forged in Lava
.
Alongside this, if using the new legendary gloves
Smoldering Heart
you can find extra value from
Gathering of the Maelstrom
due to the additional Maelstrom generation that can be converted into more
Ascendance
activations.
Finally,
Crashing Hammer
is a significant enough of an increase to be worth going for if available given how minimal the single target gain of other relics can sometimes be. This trait is however much rarer than others, only appearing on more recent relics as it's a 7.2 addition (plus the crucible), so is less of a frequent option.
Other traits are not worth sacrificing item level for currently and you should aim for the highest amount of weapon item levels you can gain if it doesn't involve these choices.
