With this option, Headmaster Fynch chooses Janae to be the next airship captain instead of Sophietta or Edwyn.

If you pick up the Lightspark Grade Book, you can see the grades of all 3 students. You may take these (or not) into consideration when you make your decision!

This will determinate the next Arathi airship captain. Options at Headmaster Fynch:
1. It would be fair to accept Sophietta's report -> Sophietta
2. Once your start making exceptions, the system becomes unfair -> Edwyn
3. You shouldn’t accept late work, but Edwyn shouldn’t benefit. -> Janae

I'm surprised the principal didn't decide to expel or demote Edwyn. He's very clearly a troublemaker unfit to be a captain or an officer.

It's kind of mindblowing to me that there are basically no consequences for Edwyn, who is quite obviously morally unfit to be an officer of any description. He got told to clean the skiff for dipping the report in stew and he even pawned that off on his lackeys.

Maybe not only the book will help you make your decision.
But when you run through the backroom to the next building, you can catch a small conversation between Edwyn and his 2 buddies, Caerin & Faerley.
Apparantly Edwyn got punished for dropping the book in the stew. He now needs to clean a skiff. But "delegates" this to his 2 friends. With the wording; and i say you have to help me.
Obnoxious little brat imho. Never good material for a leader in whatever position.
I have submitted a screenshot with the conversation, hope it will get approved.
And according to the tutor book, the other student is lazy. Not really officer material either.
So, my choice was the exception proves the rule and these were exceptional circumstances why the report is being filed in too late.

if sophietta's notes had been lost entirely due to her own carelessness and edwyn simply took advantage of that in a really annoying way, i'd have been happy to pick janae.

being able to stay organised is also an important skill, and i'd normally operate on 'your lack of planning is not my emergency' rules in the principle's position. there is also room to be made to challenge her on assuming her skills are so good she's above the rules. sure, edwyn is arrogant too, but potentially so is sophie in a far more passive way. janae's more humble nature dodges both of those pitfalls, despite her lower hard stats.

but as is, that's not the case at all. sophie knew precisely where her notes should be and someone else maliciously intervened and actively sabotaged her, and stating hard facts is only an arrogant act if you're an arrogant jerk about it, which sophie never is.

sorry janae. it's not you, it's edwyn.

I had to go with Sophietta because it was the best choice for the Arathi peoples in my opinion. I didn't like asking the principal to bend the rules, but since she was actively sabotaged and not careless, I decided it was regrettable but necessary.
Just sad Edwyn didn't get smacked with a bigger ruler, I can totally see the man joining hands with anyone who offered him more power. You would have thought that a people literally being hunted by the evil, whispering dark would be a bit more sensitive to easily corruptible leaders...
Janae's scores were just too low, and she's apparently too laid back to try, so I guess she didn't want it that bad anyway.

It's wild that this is even a tough choice for Fynch. What on earth do you mean you can't bend the rules? Sophietta was actively sabotaged, my guy. If he's so set on his "rules" that he can't make an exception for an obvious injustice, he shouldn't be headmaster any more than Edwin should be a captain. It doesn't even seem like Edwin even received a realistic punishment either. Fynch is a clown.

Sophietta not working to smooth out a rough relationship with a classmate to the point of him actively sabotaging her is a problem. On a ship just letting that stuff slide and being a nice person is going to cause all sorts of problems. Her and her antagonist working together under someone else might fix things with their relationship and make them both better captains in the long-term

I chose Sophietta for obvious moral reasons on my first toon; have not had a chance to see the others.
Sophietta and the headmaster (end of quest) have a somewhat predictable happy ending-esque conversation. She's happy he made the right decision, you reassure him as the player character, and they will all do their best to make Lightspark proud. She leaves the headmaster to his dinner and thanks you again.

Jenae says that she does not mind Sophietta and she says she is the best choice. It will be an honor to serve her as an officer and she hopes to pick up some of her drive. She is glad she doesn't have to deal with the stress of being Captain and that Edwyn can be difficult. She is glad.

Edwyn says he should be captain (lol). he says no one will be more careful to keep his crew safe or work harder. He says Sophietta will be a fantastic pilot, she knows what the airship can do and she will be great at it. He thinks the headmaster made a wrong choice, but it's still a good choice - just not the best.

I understand the moral quandary they were going for here, but I don't think it works in this scenario. Yes, Sophietta is technically past her deadline, but she very clearly would have been on time had it not been for Edwyn's attempted sabotage. And making an exception for her when she has witness testimony not just from the player, but from at least one other staff member as well, hardly equates to breaking your ongoing system against tardiness.

I feel more emphasis should've been put on the beginning of the questline, when we begin the search. Still have Edwyn take the notebook, but put more emphasis on Sophietta's carelessness in misplacing it, rather than just looking away for a moment. In that case, there'd possibly be more room to consider selecting the third option and making Janae the captain. But in the story as it is presented, it really seems like there's not much argument to be made that Sophietta should face any sort of consequences. It's like the trolley problem with a third track that has nobody tied to it: the implied moral dilemma isn't there, there's very clearly a correct choice.

Yes, I overthink the events of minor quest-chains. #TeamSophietta.

There should have been a fourth option:
If you put someone who sabotages his fellow Arathi in charge, you may as well feed us all to the Nerubians. If you put someone who was late in charge, you sacrifice your sacred sense of Order.

Edit to sneak in a quip from others: She wasn't late until Edwyn and his pals interfered, so it could instead say
Honestly, it shouldn't impair your sacred sense of Order to credit her back the time Edwyn's antics burned for her; the Star above probably saw the whole thing and it ought to prefer Honor to disruption.

If you put someone unambitious in charge, you'll just have to feel absolutely certain about the skills of their underlings. If that's the case, why don't you just put ME in charge? I have no history with you and I already hate Nerubians.

I've tried to follow the questline story and read all of the other comments on here also. But I feel like I'm the only one who disagrees with everyone and think that;
Janae would be best suited as Captain.

Let me tell you why I think that is. (I may be wrong *Shrugs*)
Like everyone else I first focused on the "morals" of the story, that yes Edwyn was in the wrong by sabotaging his fellow student and that he should not be chosen captain and protagonist of the side quest Sophietta, should instead.
But then I read the Lightspark Grade Book found inside the house where you start this quest chain and talked to Janae which you can ask about the training and selection process and her thoughts on Sophietta and Edwyn.

1) Test scores and Headmasters comments on each student.
I compared all the data and Headmaster's Lightspark Grade Book talking about each student. And yes in terms of scores Edwyn and Sophietta top Janae's score in all 5 categories but the scores were all similar. In both Sophietta and Edwyn they're seen as hardworking, obsessve, having strong grasps of their capabilities and limits, both commented as very good pilots.
But for Janae shes commented as a natural across all scores. giving her "an excellent foundation if she were selected as captain." probably meaning if she was as ambitious and hardworking as both she would be selected as captain.

But the one thing she beat both students at was her Leadership score just by a tiny amount.

2) Talking to Janae and her opinions on Lightspark and Sophietta and Edwyn
She has clear opinions on both people. and Clearly understands why shes here and what shes training for. Clearly fully understands the capacity of her own skills. but to me from the outside looking in. She seems calm, collected and observant of her peers, which are great characteristics of a Captain. and lastly if she were relaxed the whole time and maybe considered lazy and not as hard working as her peers. with some effort she could be ten times better being a Captain.

I ended up choosing Janae. #TeamJanae

I chose Janae. She benefitted as the third person, as Edwyn's treachery cost both himself and Sophietta.

You see, we are talking about an airship captain, someone who has huge responsibilities in the safety of not only the crew, but to the entire group of Arathi people. Obviously we cannot have a treacherous person at the helm, but we also cannot have someone who is so careless and easily compromised.

The headmaster's notes said that Janae is unambitious. That should probably make her the best choice for captain, as she has no desire to continue to move up the command chain, thus offering stability to the airship department.

I'd put Sophietta as the first office, and Edwyn at the helm.

Considering how much discussions this little quest line has led to in here, quest designers clearly will never get enough credit for mini stories they build into games.
Love seeing people debate over such a small but pretty nice quest.

I think everyone here is missing one big part of this whole quest because once again, Blizz shows us they have no clue what they're doing. They write these characters in such a way that no one in the real world would actually act like this. Why do I say this?

Headmaster Fynch is an idiot and is unfit for teaching.

Oh, yes, I went there...

His unwavering dedication to stick to the rules to "be fair" would have seriously undermined his integrity as a teacher and would have most likely gotten a lot of people killed for the wrong reasons. Sometimes you must bend the rules for the benefit of everyone. Sometimes the rules do not apply to unique situations. If he was willing to keep things fair for his students, he should have recognized that Edwyn was cheating when the issue was brought to his attention, but he was willing to make Edwyn captain because he cheated.

That is NOT fair to the other students.

His rules were more important to him than doing some critical thinking to recognize that this is a very serious situation with very serious consequences. He would have literally put someone in command of not just a warship, but other people, that lied and cheated to get ahead in his own class.

I see arguments all three ways for each student, but when you get right down to it, the teacher might not be making the best choices for his students if he's allowing lying and cheating to sway his decisions.

Description

Great work gathering these up. I found a few blowing around up here, so I think we've got all the pages. Let's get this to Headmaster Fynch! He's probably in the classroom. I sure hope he accepts it. He says he doesn't accept late work, but there were a lot of extenuating circumstances at play here. And if he doesn't, I'll be reporting to Edwyn as my captain. I'm not sure I could do that, after what's happened.
