Rest in Peace.I met Dave a couple years back. He was a good man. God rest his soul.
I've met both Dave and Gary on numerous occasions over the years, as a long time RPGer starting with the original D&D. You know that you're a geek when you recognize either of these guys by sight, which I did the first time I went to GenCon many years ago. I dragged my friends around meeting everyone I could find. "Hey look dude, that's R.A. Salvatore! Lets go bother him!" and "Ooo, see that older guy smoking a butt over there? That's Gary Gygax!" 8)Dave was a little more reserved than Gary was, but he was still a nice guy. I definitely hung out with Gary more over the years, because he was the kind that never passed up a free drink from a fan lol, and would happily hang out with you for hours shooting the breeze. The last time I saw Dave Arneson was actually a while ago now, as it was the first year they moved GenCon to Indianapolis (whenever that was). These guys were personally responsible for the majority of the joy and fun in my youth and hours upon hours of roleplaying fun I've had from then until now. Dave, and Gary will certainly be missed by me...
Rest in peace
When Gary died, I went to look for my old copies of the DM's guide, and the Monster Manual, but alas, they had long ago left my possession (although I still have my d20 :) )Thank you Gary and Dave, for many, many happy days, and flights of fancy. Just look at what your work has spawned. Rest in peace.
It is worth noting that Dave, in some ways, is even more responsible for roleplaying games, and to an extent, games such as WoW even more than Gary was, although Gary will always be the grandfather of such games in the eyes of the mainstream, partly because of all of his work with DnD afterwards.Dave was the first to turn the large-scale wargames (the precursers to Warhammer) into single-character games, and was the first to create a campaign setting, and a world setting, namely Blackmoor (I think that's how it was spelled). If it weren't for him, it would likely have been some time before somebody else came up with such (then radical) ideas.R.I.P. Dave and Gary, the greats of the game have passed on. It is indeed in our hands now; let us hope those hands are good.
Rest in Peace mate :(
Rest in PeaceAnd thank you for what you have brought to this world
R.I.P., Dave. I'll think of you every time my dwarf cleric bashes a goblin in the skull.
Someone came to the WoW forums to proselytize our heathen souls. I had the august opportunity to meet both Dave and Gary, and actually participated in one of Gary's pickup games at Gencon 02'. I also participated in an emailing list with both Gary and Dave, where we discussed politics, religion, gaming, news, and everything in between. Truly great minds who sought to bring enjoyment to many dedicated fans.
