Warlords was indeed the first expac to have missions that we sent followers out on. That feature got progressively worse up to Shadowlands. But in terms of free gold you could make a lot from the shipyards with dwarf or goblin crews greatly increasing the amount rewarded for successful completion.
great post. the tldr imo is that gold making is way more tedious, boring, and time consuming than ever before. probably by design to promote sales of gold tokens (which isnt all bad by the way; after all, people cant pay for their sub with gold if people arent buying tokens dont forget).
I had to bail on my tried and true skygolem factory that's served me for years. Dragon riding took it out back and killed it. I thought maybe it could rise from the grave but when they confirmed dragon riding is our flying future I knew it was dead for good.
Honestly kind of like the way things have panned out this expansion. By killing my gold income and kneecapping my ability to buy game time with gold, I've just spent a lot less time playing and have been able to unsub for longer periods of time. My professions don't matter for much of anything, gold only goes up at a trickle, most of the content I care about can be accomplished in a few weeks. So thanks, Blizzard! You kept me around all throughout Shadowlands because I could pay with the gold I made from blacksmithing, but now that gold is reserved for raiders and no-lifers -- or people who shell out stupid amounts of cash -- it's a lot easier to just quit for six months and enjoy other games.
My question is: is gold even relevant anymore?Outside of the token sales and boosting communities, is there even a point to gold anymore, for the average player?
The best move for making gold in DF is farming Alchemical Flavor Packets by far. They're currently sitting at ~65k (NA) a pop. AH takes 3k but it is what it is. I managed to snag 3 this week after farming the feasts out on my army of alts -- they sold for about ~55k each just earlier this week. These things are in constant demand, and one embellishment that Blizz left unchanged so their demand will always be high!
For me, after nearly 20 years, WoW is slowly coming to an end. My stash of gold would allow me to play for free for maybe a few more years at current token price. But what's the point? The time I would have to spend each month for making enough gold to even pay for token is just too much for a game. So the gold in my account is slowly and steadily flowing away. I've been on that route for every WQ that awards gold and also doing the dragonriding quests. But with a lot of time investment and a mini army of nine alts, I could barely make enough gold to pay for one token. That's not fun and simply too time consuming.Beside all that I don't like dragonriding at all. Farming herbs and ores is not fun. Real flying is time gated again behind reputation, even though we can already fly the dragons. This all and much more takes the fun out of the game. At least for me. So I think it's time to move on. It was a great time, but after all, all good things must end at some point. It's just a pity that the game publisher does it's best to make this end come sooner.
Oh no.... LET THE BLACK FRIDAY FOR DRACOTHYSTS BEGIN!
Do these posts even have any point? How to make gold, when there are infinite number of bots flying around zaralek caverns 0-24 to mine and herb.....
