With the dracthyr starting storyline and zone, the Forbidden Reach, being tested on the alpha, we have been able to learn a little more about Raszageth, the final boss in the first Dragonflight raid!
Warning: Story spoilers ahead.
An Ancient Threat
In ancient history, before the Dragon Aspects were granted their powers, dragons were very different as we know them today. The proto-drakes of Azeroth were essentially elemental creatures, evolving elemental-based powers such as the red dragonflight's fire breath, or the blue dragonflight's control over ice.
When Steve Danuser and Terran Gregory discussed
Weaving a Story
during the Dragonflight reveal, Danuser mentioned that the resurgence of elemental energy in the Dragon Isles is also awakening some very old threats as well. One of these threats, we have since learned, is our first raid end-boss: Raszageth.
The Primalists - An Elemental Cult
During the Forbidden Reach storyline, the dracthyr encounter a group of elemental magic wielding proto-drakes lead by a tauren shaman named Kurog Grimtotem. (For now, it's unknown what Kurog's relationship is to other Grimtotem such as Magatha, but as a tribe, the Grimtotem do tend to be known for both powerful elemental magic and for playing aggressive, antagonistic roles.) Kurog is currently listed as the third final boss in the Vault of the Incarnates raid.
Kurog seems to have convinced the proto-drakes that the Aspects have lied to them, and that true power is to embrace powerful elemental magic. It becomes clear that Grimtotem's Primalists intend to free someone known as the "Storm-Eater" from her prison.
King Grimtotem says: Tarasek! We offer you freedom... and power! Join our fight against the Aspects!
King Grimtotem says: Embrace the gift of the Storm-Eater! Together we will unleash her might upon this world!
King Grimtotem says: The elements awaken! Infuse me with their strength, and I will free the Storm-Eater from her prison!
While this is still going on, Ebyssian and Wrathion arrive with a warning. The creature that the Primalists are trying to release is poses an extremely dangerous threat, not just to the Dragon Isles, but to the world. Unfortunately, while the black dragons join the dracthyr to defend the vault, the Primalists prove to be too powerful.
Raszageth, the Storm Eater
As it turns out, Raszageth, the Storm Eater is an ancient and powerful proto-dragon who apparently posed such a great threat, she was imprisoned within Froststone Vault in the Dragon Isles. Since the dracthyr are unable to stop the Primalists from releasing her, she is free once more - and ready to wreak havoc upon the world.
As her name implies, Raszageth's elemental abilities are notably storm-based, with powerful wind and lightning attacks. Importantly, being a proto-drake does not make her weak or less of a threat. Wrathion claims to have "never faced a dragon of such raw elemental power".
Apart from being the focus of the
Vault of the Incarnates
, Dragonflight's first raid, we also know that Raszageth and her Primalists play a major role in
Azure Span's storyline
.
Speculation - Dracthyr Legacy?
Froststone Vault is guarded by the Ebon Scales - a faction of dracthyr led by Scalemcommander Sakareth. When dracthyr players warn Sakareth of the Primalist assault, he has something quite interesting to say.
Scalecommander Sarkareth says: This vault holds our legacy! We will not let invaders claim it!
As far as Sarkareth is concerned, Raszageth is not just a prisoner, but also a legacy - specifically the dracthyr's legacy. Could this mean Raszageth is inherently tied to the dracthyr - did Neltharion create the Dracthyr in her image?
According to "Captain Exposition", an NPC added to alphas, betas, and the PTR to explain missing cutscenes, Raszageth seems to be aware of Neltharion's death and really pleased about it - suggesting she has reason to hate Neltharion. The implication does seem to be that it was Neltharion who imprisoned her.
As Wrathion flies towards the vault, he is too late as Kurog and his Primalists break the seal using power harnessed from Stormsunder Crater Earlier.
The doors fling open with wind and force as a form emerges:
Raszageth, the Storm-Eater.
Raszageth taunts Wrathion with the death of his father, Neltharion before she drives him away... violently. The Storm-Eater comes forth bringing the tempest!
RUN!
In the Azure Span storyline, Raszageth and the Primalists can be found attacking ley lines, and Raszageth makes it clear she hates the blue dragonflight and arcane magic. It's safe to assume she despises all the Aspects, as they represent the move away from elemental magic that she and her Primalists embrace.
It's worth noting that Scalecommander Sarkareth becomes greatly disillusioned after realizing that Neltharion is gone and the dracthyr have been locked away for thousands of years. Before dracthyr players leave the island, Sarkareth and his Ebon Scales break away from the dracthyr, renaming themselves the Sundered Flame and promising to reclaim their destiny.
It was our destiny to be the finest soldiers of dragonkind. We pledged our lives to fight at Neltharion's side.
Oure LIVES, evoker. And what was our vow worth to the Aspects?
Nothing. They locked us away like broken playthings.
Well, we are NOT broken.
<Relay what Nozdormu told you.>
Scalecommander Azurathel says: Sarkareth, my weyrn will follow Wrathion to the city called Stormwind. Come with us.
Scalecommander Sarkareth says: I am done taking orders! Our vow to serve the dragons is sundered... just as Neltharion broke his promises to us!
Scalecommander Sarkareth says: Let the Ebon Scales be forgotten! We are now the Sundered Flame! We will claim the destiny that is ours by right!
Scalecommander Azurathel says: His anger pushes him down a dark path. I dread the day we meet again. Not as friends, but as rivals on the field of battle.
There is a strong chance that the Sundered Flame will join Raszageth and her Primalists, especially considering the appearance of the
Tarasek Marauder NPCs
. Perhaps Sarkareth decides Raszageth can be his legacy in more ways than one.

Who is Raszageth? Oh, just some rando that didn't matter up until this point... I see that Blizzard's "writers" can only make these generic The Jailer type of villains that came out of nowhere (this time a bellow average dragon) and suddenly they are the great threat to the world, before they are forgotten again by everyone in a few months...
Yes lets not introduce new villains amirite?
Like its not like Dracthyr need a backstory or a villain.
Its not like we need to discover new dragons on the Dragon Isles right? or discover Dragon history?
AND if we discover these villains they should be like pointless right? None of the villains before have threatened existence on Azeroth right? All the villains was like "I am here to dance and you cant stop me from dancing!"
Then just maybe they should do it right, ya know? ;) No one is saying don't make new villains, the problem is how they are doing it. Don't paint these nobodies like they are something greater than previous villains, like that this little protodrake is some big deal to the world when we already took down much greater and more dangerous evil doers... that is a problem they wrote themselves into and these attempts are just comical because of it. She looks like something a few harpoon shots would fix. If you wanna make a villain people care about and which won't be forgotten immediately, you have to earn it - take it slow, carefully, or be original (which is not present here, just good ol' evil creature being evil, once imprisoned and now freed by their rando servant we didn't manage to stop for reasons). Blizzard seems to think this is the main way how to write a new villain now - it's a common gimmick for lazy writers, as they can skip actually important part of new character development this way, like seing the villain rise in power to the current levels, witnesing their story to understand their motivations... nah, let's just make it so the villain is already powerful, just waiting to come out in their full glory and be evil... and thats how we ended up with "The Jailer is so cunning, clever and omniscient, because we said that about him (which is the easy part), but we lack the ability to actually show it because it wasn't earned."

First of all, the Jailer is bad writing but don’t act like they haven’t written throwaways in past expansions. Second, the Dragon Isles have been sealed and we know from Dawn of the Aspects how powerful proto dragons are. Third, you’re not playing Alpha/Beta, the only worldbuilding you’re reading is a WoWhead article with skimmed plot points.
