Blizzard Hiring for Unannounced Mobile Project

Blizzard Entertainment put up a
new job listing
for an unannounced mobile project, looking for a Senior Test Lead in their Quality Assurance department. While this isn't news in of itself, as Blizzard is virtually always hiring a variety of different positions, including
30 positions
for unannounced projects, only a third of them of them are specifically mobile projects, reminding us of their claim that mobile titles were in development across all Blizzard games. Also notable is their Covid-19 hiring update, emphasizing their current work-from-home model, although all positions still appear to be based in California, rather than true remote employment.
Following the
Diablo: Immortal
reveal at BlizzCon 2018, Wyatt Cheng stated that there were
more mobile titles in development
across all Blizzard IPs, and we looked at how massive the mobile gaming industry had become - accounting for 47% of the entire gaming market in 2018, rising to 60% in 2019. In parent company
Activision's Q1 2020 Earnings Call
earlier today, we also heard resounding success from Activision subsidiary King, as Candy Crush users have continued to grow each month, reporting double-digit growth in March and more game rounds played than in any quarter since Activision-Blizzard's acquisition of the company in 2016.
"In terms of Blizzard's approach to mobile gaming, many of us over the last few years have shifted from playing primarily desktop to playing many hours on mobile, and we have many of our best developers now working on new mobile titles across all of our IPs. Some of them are with external partners, like Diablo: Immortal; many of them are being developed internally only, and we'll have information to share on those in the future. I will say also that we have more new products in development today at Blizzard than we've ever had in our history and our future is very bright."
This trend of "traditional" developers breaking into mobile gaming isn't unique to Blizzard either - with Pokémon, Mario, Final Fantasy, Call of Duty, Fallout, Gears of War, and The Elder Scrolls all seeing widespread success, and those are just a few of the AAA titles which have successfully made their way into the mobile market. While commonly derided by traditional gamers, mobile gaming has become a
huge
industry, so it shouldn't be any surprise that developers are so eager to break into it; earlier this year
Mobile Marketer
reported 1.36 billion mobile gamers worldwide, calling mobile platforms the "most significant segment of the video game industry as smartphones expand the gaming market beyond consoles and personal computers." While China, the United States, and Japan make up the biggest mobile gaming markets in terms of population and revenue, it's also especially large in countries where gamers are more likely to own a smartphone than a PC or console system, such as Brazil, China, and Indonesia, while
Newzoo forcasts
more revenue growth coming from emerging markets such as the Middle East, Latin America, India, and Southeast Asia.

How Blizzard will continue to expand into this market remains to be seen, whether it's via full-fledged titles (
Diablo: Immortal
), mini-game and supplemental activities (mobile pet battles when!?), as well as whether those projects will all be handled internally or worked on by partners such as in the case of Diablo: Immortal. Reaching new markets ideally brings in new fans and more revenue which benefits both mobile and PC titles, but these projects have so far been handled by separate teams, with no evidence to suggest that an increased emphasis on mobile will result in less PC titles, further reinforced by this quote from

last year:

...we’re not going to become a mobile-only company. We are PC. We have strong roots in console from the very early days, but we’ve been a primarily PC developer for a very long time and that’s not going to change.
