For a summary of the differences between Noob and Newb, look here.As for my opinion, I believe you are no longer a newb when you know what you're doing.
We've all had our own newb moments but i think putting a definition on this term is near impossible. Everyone is a newb in their own way! Some know how to PvE, they don't ask questions just do their job and do it right. They know the fights and know what to do in case something goes wrong. Others know how to PvP, they know to to stop a class dead in their tracks and do an amazing job at it.But even then its being too general, some people don't like either. They have alot of alts at high levels but they don't have the best gear. These are the people who know every class and know them well. Finally, there are those who know the economy like the back of their hand. They have so much gold, they have the traveler's tundra mount and the motorcycle. They know what to farm and what route to take in order to make large amounts of gold fast.My personal opinion is that you stop being a newb when you know what you're doing. Be it multiple of these or just one.
You stop being a newb and become average when you think you're at that benchmark, and others agree. You start being a noob when you think you are a good player in spite of the opinions of others. You stop being a complete and utter noob when you take advice. You stop being a noob once you learn how to find things out for yourself, and put what you learned into practice. It also helps if you stop using 1337speak.
Newbs learn, noobs don't, simple as that. /thread.
You are always a newb in one way or another, but you are a noob if any of the following are true:1. You can't out- dps/tank/heal someone ten or more levels below you.2. You lose a duel with a training dummy, and it walks away with your lunch money.3. Your vanity pet disowns you and runs away.4. You refuse to accept or consider any opinions or views that differ from yours.5. You obtained a mount and haven't figured out how to use it for at least 2 weeks.6. Over half the people you try to talk to have you on ignore, and you've never even talked to them before.7. You continue to stand in fire/poison clouds/void zones so you can maximize your damage/healing/damage taken.8. You think the most important thing in a group/raid is doing the most damage/healing/damage taken.9. Whenever you die, it's always someone else's fault.10. You've never moved without keyturning or moved away from something without backpedaling.11. You're so dependant on Questhelper that you have a shrine to it on your physical desktop/playing surface, and still refuse to read quest descriptions or believe that Questhelper can be wrong or cause bugs.12. You will always hit "Yes" for ready checks, even if you're AFK or clueless about what it's for.13. Everyone has you muted on Vent/Teamspeak within minutes of you starting to talk.
For years I've always simply understood the word newb as a simple psychological perception of someone who's not as adept as yourself. It's easy for someone to have someone else ask a question then to can it with the word "noob" simply because it appeared... stupid.I don't ever use the word newb unless to simplify my wording. In essence, noob is slang, and other than that I don't see the concept of "newbishness" to be of any use in other context except in defining it for topics such etymological threads as these. It can be defined a million times, but people are just going to manipulate it as a petty insult.Well, that's just me, but I've always believed that one should never stop asking questions no matter how knowledgeable one may become. I feel that we shall and always will be "newbish."
