What happens outside the game is often lost on players so may as well not be canon. To most players that don't bother with outside material, Tyrande was nothing but a coward running away.Ever since Sunwell where I got confused on who Kalecgos was and the chick in the Sunwell who dies at the end, I haven't much liked Blizzard putting main story points outside the game. What's in the game often stays in the game aside from when Blizzard removes it which is another irritation for me. Outside materials often go out of print which results in players having to go to the wiki pages to figure out things. But the wiki pages are always summarized and thus things are always lost.Blizzard repeatedly does this, too. Anveena and Kalecgos, Varian's gladiator years and his return, Varian's wolf side, Garrosh's imprisonment, Anduin's and Wrathion's friendship, the female gnome Jaina lost at Theramore. What's the point to even pay attention to the lore in the game if most of the lore isn't even there forcing you to go elsewhere to fill in the blanks? Blizzard said most players don't even bother reading quest text. Not hard to believe that when it becomes very easy to get confused on who someone is because their backstory was in a book/comic.While spreading the story across many mediums can be useful, it can be irritating as well. It also suggests to me a cost cutting measure. When Blizzard could have had Tyrande's actions be in the game to make the quest chain longer, Blizzard chose not to do that. So instead of more things for the players to do with the pre-expansion event, Blizzard chose to cut some development and toss it in a book few will even read. Other things that end up solely in books could be due to not having the technology to implement it well, no version available for the opposite side, or running out of time. Taelia Fordragon certainly could have (and should have) had introduction quests prior to us finally seeing her in BfA. Yet Blizzard couldn't take the time to put in even little mentions of her. The mail quest in Dalaran was a perfect opportunity to add in a lost letter from her to Bolvar that Alliance players could have delivered to Anduin. But nope. That just screams to me that she was an afterthought. Blizzard even admitted there was a female character someone came up with who they liked and implemented her across various zones. Taelia feels so last minute so not hard to figure out she's likely that female character. Horde side could have had a letter from one of the Zandalari trolls to Vol'jin they deliver to Sylvanas instead. But again, nope. There's a reason why many like to shop at all-in-one stores like Walmart. It's often a waste of time, gas, and money for people to have to go multiple places for things. So why does Blizzard think people would want to go multiple places to fill in the blanks with the lore?So I'm with musicallittle1. If it's not in game, it might as well not be canon.
Reading the summaries of Elegy and A Good War, and reading the comments here... I'm no longer losing faith in the writers. I'm losing faith in the player base. Blizzard is having to deal with in-game limitations, and anyone with decent enough internet can go and look these up if they're insightful enough to do so. All of you who claim that if it didn't happen in-game that it never happened, then you're willingly looking at plot holes you made for yourself, rather than taking the time to fill them in with the books, and other forms of media. If you are going to be so anal about the whole "pics or it didn't happen" philosophy, I'm sorry. The game will no longer make sense to you. I read these things, and it makes a whole lot of sense to me now. People all have already made the information available, why can't you find the time to look it up for yourselves?
That still doesn't explain where the huuuge horde army came from... we were told they are almost extinct forseeral expansion.Their lack in numbers was what caused their downfall on the broken shore. It s said everywhere, also in the texts for allied races.still doesn't explain how seasond warrios with FIELD ADVANTAGE could loose so clearly and fast... ffs! Numbers matter little with field advantage... the russiands and alexander the great learned that the hard way...it all seems.... not thought thoruhg... like rushed.I fear they shouldn't have made an earlier release date
@perculiaDoes somebody ask developers about the future of night elves in context of 'Elegy' part?
So that what happen when you get a book author to make your game story? We end up with a fraction of what was suppose to happen and the canon is in book, how great....
I can believe engine limitations prevented the real story of Saurfang - Tyrande being told, and this is exactly why any Alliance cinematic, if there is one, should be this very event. Do not make it about Anduin, nor Genn playing second fiddle. Make it about Tyrande and Elune showing their combined power.I also note that portals are the biggest plot holes that keep on giving. Those displaced can escape to safety but Alliance troops have to make the return journey by boat, why?

While I understand Blizzard's desire to use multiple forms of media to convey their story, not showing any of this in game is a massive disservice to their fan base. Not many players also read the books, novellas, comics, and whatnot, relying on the game and cinematics to do the story telling for them. Since I read the books and lore, I know exactly how strong Tyrande is, which is not shown at all in game. Even a tiny cinematic would have been better than the weak quest they sent us on to see the interaction between Tyrande, Saurfang, Sylvanas, and Malfurion. When the dev team came out and said that they were planning this pre-patch to be 'different' than any of the other ones, I had hoped that they had something epic planned instead of these short quest lines that lacked depth and details. Granted, I adore the cinematics we've been getting, but the fact that they've placed watered down versions of the lore in game is a major let down. I am glad for the explanation, because it does go with Tyrande's character, but would it have killed them to put some of that in game?
Blizzards ability to portray lore in-game is abysmal. Most of their players won’t read these books. Free or not.
I think we need a Warbringers: Tyrande.
@TalimeYou make me fill better. But I want to see not the burning Orgrimmar but the great new place which evles will call "home".
Please proofread.
I really, really, REALLY hate they can't seem to be able to tell the game story inside the game itself.I mean, the game story is quite clunky as it is now, sometimes not making sense from one dialogue to the other, or throwing sudden 180° character change at us for now other reason than the lead writer having changed between expansion ( if not between patches ). But now, it's like they try to glue pieces of nonsense together using third party medias like books, novellas, comics, animated pieces, etc. Sometimes it cost money, sometimes it doesn't ; at any rate, it has become increasingly difficult to navigate the lore.Basically, I think spawning more and more third party medias that tell us important bits of lore is a huge disservice for the actual game. What I see in the end is questions that will find no answers or gaps in the lore that will probably never get filled by the game, like, indeed, "where was Tyrande exactly while the Horde was marching on her home and her temple ?"I don't know, maybe people like this kind of storytelling, broken up into pieces that you have to look for ( if you even know they actually exist in the first place ), but I sure don't. Tell your full story into your own god*mn game(S), Blizzard.
