R.I.P. Fire Nova, you are dearly missed. But what we learned from you is that blizz won't remove quadratic scaling aoe spells until the end of the expansion that the reign in.
I've updated the article to properly display the scaling after 20 targets. Essentially, it's quadratic up to 20, and linear afterwards. Furthermore, Festermight adds another layer up to 30-40 targets. I'm sorry about the errors in the previous version of the article, I hope that it's all fine now.I've noticed that a lot of people have commented about the potential nerfs to Unholy Death Knights because of this quadratic behaviour. It's important to note that it's rare to have quadratically scaling spells, but it's not unique. For instance, Living Bomb behaves in a very similar manner: scaling quadratically up to 20 targets, and linearly afterwards. My intention was not to publish an article with the purpose of nerfing my own class. However, I do believe in a balanced game and I'd like classes to have similar value in most situations. If one class requires a nerf, it's not wrong if it gets it. As I wrote in the article, I hope the article taught you something about how the game works. My true intention was to spread knowledge.
I hope this gets people to try Unholy DK, don't think I've seen a single one this entire xpac in my PuG M+ runs... not one.
People are comparing this with broken Fire Nova. Fire Nova required no skills: 1) Apply Flame shock 2) Lava lash 3) Fire Nova 4) Boom. UH requires more timing and luck from Infected Claws and Pestilence to generate more festering wounds. Also for best result, you need to apply multiple targets with festering wounds which requires either luck from those talents or manually from festering strikes on multiple targets. Then use D&D to burst them all.
Since Blizzard just utterly destroyed Sub rogues for essentially the same mechanic for AoE, and made the Sub class now totally useless in every single scenario, I expect that DKs will suffer a similar fate, making all damage linear and thus removing them from being taken for trash pull contests.Because if today's Blizzard knows how to do anything well, it's how to remove everything that makes the game fun.
All of this theory is nice, but you can't sustain this.You first have to bring up Festering Wound on multiple targets ... and Pestilence only has a 10% chance per tick to apply one.I would now not say this is Imbalance ... it is like this since Legion. The only one new thing is that now Death and Decay has a 10% chance to apply Festering Wound.
This is actually insane.I'm pleb nation 348 and I was in Darkshore and got some wounds on a few mobs pressed scourge strike 2 times (before dying) TWO TIMES and did 1M dmg lol.
