Way to guarantee I never install overwolf. If they successfully kill off all the good addon managers I will just download and update manually.
This is complete bogus fear mongering. They somehow thought buying CurseForge would help them restore their reputation with the gaming community but instead it spawned competition which provided ad-free lightweight alternatives that actually provided support for more than just CurseForge. Bottom line is Overwolf is seeing their chances at monetization evaporating and they are panicking. What they don't get is if they go after add-on managers the next thing the community will replace is CurseForge and they will be left with absolutely nothing.Wowhead really should put a disclaimer on this article that it is propaganda.
This is just straight up fearmongering. Cut it out, Overwolf. You're not winning any brownie points for anyone but other than yourself.
Come on guys, Overwolf? Seriously? Everyone knows it's Overbull%^&*. Don't do that, just tell em to back off. Overwolf does not bring anything good.
i mean, you're not even installing overwolf, it's a standalone curseforge client created specifically for that reason that doesn't need overwolf installed to run.not to mention overwolf hasn't been a bloated piece of adware for years it's actually quite lean (i installed it a couple of weeks back when curse said it was changing to overwolf, didn't realise i didn't need to install it) i don't have it installed now because it serves no purpose for me, like the twitch client will be deleted as soon as they are no longer hosting curseforge. but to my point, it wasn't even that bad and was completely unobtrusive. But as it stands, instead of getting your panties in a bunch, you could try giving it a chance, maybe the standalone client will actually be decent and do exactly what they say for mod developers.
Overwolf nuking the other addon managers will have the opposite effect of making me want to use it. That will cement my decision to never install it onto my computer.
So Overwolf are threatening and fearmongering so you could use their client so they can track you and invade your privacy with targeted ads and actual spyware on your PC.Good luck with that. A lot of addons are already published on GitHub anyway and some third party addon managers can pull directly from GitHub. If Overwolf decide to block access to the CurseForge API, even more addon authors will set up repos on GitHub.All in all, Overwolf are just bluffing and can't even do anything about it. Good riddance.
Hey Overwolf, I hope removed reads this:I will NEVER install your software. If you go out of your way to shut down other mod managers I will go back to installing my mods MANUALLY.You are trash, and your strong arming only confirms this.
We can always ask wowdevs to move off of curseforge to another platform. There is nothing special about it. If wowup goes away I will just update manually...no big deal. There is no way I will put the ad laden garbage that is Overwolf on my machine.
Overwolf is dead in the water. and Wowhead needs to amend this post. The Add-on Manager they're developing is not stand-alone. You have to install the main Overwolf Client and it runs continuously in the background until you completely exit the app (via task manager). Garbage.
For the record: I also hate this move. But I hate manual addon updates more. This is literally the fork in the road we are at. Hate it, Rage against it... but realize that a “boycott” is a serious kick in the time efficiency of your UI maintenance. It’s not nice, it’s not fair, but it’s no less true.
I refuse to use any piece of crap that overwolf puts out, if they unfairly kill competitors I will honestly just manually update my addons. I don't care. I value my information and resources more than I do using a manager. Plus from what I've read, they are doing paid tiers to update stuff all at once and download more than one thing at a time. Shame on twitch for selling curseforge to such a disgusting company.
Overwolf is literally spyware. I'm NOT installing it for ANY reason.
