Indeed, it doesn't seem right that you have to deliver so many blows onto anyone to kill them. Yet, how would you feel to be able to enter Icecrown Citadel and send a single blow into the back of Prince Arthas' neck, and he'd simply fall over dead? Not even from a RP point-of-view would that be possible. There's a lot of bosses and monsters in the World of Warcraft that are either too weak or too powerful than what they've been designed to be. For instance... Lady Onyxia, the Broodmother of the Black Dragonflight. She's a huge dragon who could easily devour the main-tank of any guild, yet even a gnome is able to tank her, and even kill her all alone now.The impression I get from this article, is that you think that it's silly how many blows are needed to kill something. I think you should look at it the other way around as well. There's a lot of monsters who are big enough to either crush, or eat someone whole. The necromancers inside of Naxxramas can raise armies of Undead, and the four Horsemen should have enough brains not to split up in every direction once someone attack them. However, that would make the game nearly impossible to play. You'd need at least 100 or 200 people to survive in raids, and a lot of well-timed blows. If you could slit open a boss' neck, and kill him by only doing that, then there'd be no challenge either. And I'm sure that everyone who played a mage in vanilla WoW, will agree with me when I say that a single backstab to kill someone can be quite frustrating. Myself, I played a Rogue back then, and whenever I saw a clothie, I'd sneak up behind it and one-shot it with an Ambush critical hit.Yes, in the real world, this would be possible. In Roleplay, this would be possible. But Blizzard can not focus on one group of people only, which is why there's Roleplay, PvE and PvP realms. Now, I'm playing on a Roleplaying realm, and have been doing so for a bit more than three years, and personally I think it's quite pathetic that you can kill Anub'arak with a five-man group, not to mention being able to kill famous lore characters like Illidan Stormrage, Kael'thas Sunstrider and Tyrande Whisperwind(not to mention the way Horde enter Darnassus)If you want to do some Roleplay/realistic combat, I recommend getting together a group of friends, even arrange it with your realm and announce it to Gamemasters if you wish to take up a fight against something as powerful as Varian Wrynn, Thrall or Kel'Thuzad and his armies in Naxxramas. Those are just examples of very powerful people of course, and you can simply start a bar brawl(which I don't recommend) or assassinate someone if you really have to. There's a lot of great Roleplayers out there, and I'm sure that at least 60% of them are willing to fight(Judgíng out from my own realm Argent Dawn EU, where at least 80% of the Alliance are either demons or murderers.)---None of this has been written to insult anyone, and if you find it offensing, I do apologise. I wrote it in a haste.
"Real" combat ends pretty quickly and randomly. I think players would find that unsatisfying. I've always found most of the actions in MMOs to feel a bit... "removed."You're issuing instructions for your avatar to carry out. But I see the reason for this system. If you made combat more direct, there wouldn't be all the options and skills. You just stab the guy. It would then be all about How and Where you attempt to stab him. These are the sorts of decisions that your avatar is supposedly making based on skill and level.I'm personally a fan of the level-less model, but I also enjoy having a slew options to choose from when engaging in combat. And for most of us, WoW isn't about the PvE combat. Stories and social networks are what keeps people adventuring.
Best blog post yet, next to the winter veil guide who helped alot. But this was very insightful, and a joy reading. Good work :)
I think one thing can be said that pretty much sums it all up.Azerothian physics and chemistry are completely different from ours, why not biology too?A complete lack of pain receptors and all neccesary organs in tiny point in the middle of the body.Yes, its not a realistic depiction of combat. you can tell by the character creation screen; there are spells involved. Picking on anything else is complaining about the rain during a tsunami.
