There is a reason google hasn't changed their homepage. Please go back.
Honestly, I get my news from WI and MMO-Champ. I come to WoWhead for the database, for searching, for locating information. It's like when Google suddenly decided to start throwing other stuff into its website - you're The (WoW) Search Engine, man, that should come first. But do what you like.
I've found a major bug while using the site on a mobile device. The bug is preventing links from working the first time a user touches it. To get a link to work, the user has to touch TWICE, on the same link, for it to go through. If you touch a link, then touch a different link, and then touch the first link, nothing happens. Only when you double touch the link does the link process. You can replicate this issue on an Android phone (I found it using a Samsung Galaxy S4 with OS 4.4.2), but it is easily replicated using Chrome by setting emulation on the console to any mobile device. (Here, another bug presents itself in that, while under emulation mode on Chrome, the page appears too big for the screen size, but that's a separate issue.)It seems to originate from power.js, where the script is attempting to add "touch" events to all links. In actuality, it's adding an additional click handler. The normal mode of operations, once the user clicks the link, there are two different jQuery click events that are triggered. But, on a touch-enabled device (you guys are seriously parsing the useragent string rather than detecting touch events?), there is a call to power.js 'onTouch' function that happens between the two jQuery events. Tracing through the code in power.js, the first time a user touches a link, it attempts to attach a tooltip source to it (presumably to allow touch users to see typical "mouseover" tooltips across the site). It doesn't appear there are any checks to verify whether the link is supposed to have a tooltip or not, so the code automatically returns false (after setting properties on the link to indicate that a tooltip is attached), preventing the browser from following through to the new page. It works on the second click because the code checks to see if the link has `hasWHTouchTooltip === true` it simply returns void, allowing the browser to follow through. In this case, the problem lies in that the code is assuming everything has a mouseover tooltip (where links have to "opt-out", like the menu links), rather than having the links that do have an appropriate tooltip to "opt-in" to showing the tooltip. Either that, or there needs to be a check of whether the link actually has an appropriate tooltip and only return false on links that have a valid tooltip.I'd give more details on how to do that, but I figure I've done enough of the heavy lifting just finding out where the issue is ;) (well, that and debugging someone else's minified code for free is not easy).
At first glance I honestly thought I had gone to the wrong site. I've not done an awful lot of looking around, but I see some people saying they dislike the font/layouts etc. but that's something that I can learn to get along with. If there's one thing I would like back, it's a central search bar on the home page. Before the change, the search bar was RIGHT there in the middle - clear, neat and ready to just use. Now it's just stuffed in the top right like some site that doesn't really care for searches, but it's there if you need it. WoWHead is a database to me, and in my opinion should cater to be one. How many other database sites have a small-medium sized search bar in one of the corners as though you're not really meant to search on the site? Heck even Bing has the search bar in the centre!Suggestions: Either create another page which is the exact same as the old home page which users that do not want the social feed can go to, or place the search bar right underneath the three news articles at the top (where the Spires of Arak, SoO Changes in 6.0 and Warlords Interview articles are at the time of my writing this).I'd definitely be happier with the first option, but would probably be able to live with the second. The change to the landing page really makes me just want to use another site entirely. Imo it looks like some spin-off of MMO Champion's home page..
Pretty weak as a whole.....but then that's what some of us have come to expect over the years. I am sure there will be enough fanboy feedback to make you feel better about the changes. The rest of us will just deal with it like we always have.
Boo new design, boo. Riot!
1) I just noticed...the buttons for "filter this set" "view in 3d", etc. on item pages now look quite out of place. It's like they are the only thing with depth on the whole site x_x2) I'm going to be honest, the red buttons don't bother me all that much. At least they stand out unlike anything else in this new design =/ I also don't mind the text size in most places.3) Contrast and separation in tables, please. The site is so much harder to read now, and I'm only 26 years old with pretty good eyes. It's unrelated to font...once I can tell where something begins and ends, reading isn't a problem.4) An issue (I think) on pages like this: Chronomancer Regalia (Mythic Lookalike)It seems like there's way too much vertical space between the headers and the lists of items. Looks really strange.5) Like someone else mentioned, mixing rounded corners with square corners is just...a strange choice from a design perspective. Currently the unrounded corners look like they were a mistake.6) The padding is really strange and seems inconsistent. In some elements it's huge, in others it's too little. Seems like there should be more padding around the edges of news posts so the text isn't so close to the edge. Readability comes in to play here when your eyes are trying to concentrate on text but is also seeing the contrast between the dark background and lighter news container.7) Someone else mentioned adding a "read more" button to expand long comments, that would be nice also.8) Lastly, the D3 button + ad take up so much extra space, and looks strange being between the navigation and breadcrumbs (since breadcrumbs are part of the navigation systems). At least let me hide it for the session instead of having to do it on every page/reload.
I don't hate the new layout, but I do feel like the old layout was "clean" so to speak. Adds. They detract attention away from what I come to see. Twice now the add bar at the top of the main page has loaded in vertical outside of the intended box. I do understand the usefulness of adds for the site, but to be honest I would take the full page splash adds of old over these any day.
Ten pages of comments that I didn't read, so this may have been said already. But...Ugh.I don't come to Wowhead for news. I don't need tweets, interviews, articles, blue trackers... and all the rest of the random stuff on the home page. I want a database so I can see where the Armor of Awesome drops or how to craft the Sword of Half a Dozen Truths. I want a simple, clean search interface -- and comments on the pages. As time has gone by, the comments are getting worse (losing formatting on replies, for example) and the home page is getting busier. The site is still functional enough to use, but I wonder how long that will last.I never ever visited wowhead news side, and now it's crammed down my throat. Excuse me while I go over here and gag a bit. Bleargh.I'm not a web designer, but I know what I like. And simple, clean fast wins in my book every time. Compare Google's home page to Yahoo's. And while I can't definitively say why Google is the more popular search engine, I can say that for me it's because it focuses on (surprise!) the search, rather than the giant fuster-cluck of news articles and the "features" of Yahoo. In a word, I think the revised home page is... WhoaBusyDoNotLikePutItBackPlease.
Don't like the new front page look. Should have an option for using the old simpler look if you want. I come to wowhead mostly for database searches. i don't care much about the other stuff. Sometimes if a news article caught my eye on the old front page, I'd have a look but mostly just searched for the item/mob/achievement I wanted and went back to wow. I can still do that, but I like simplicity.
Really don't like it so far, aesthetically. Functionally, great work though.
OMG. I love it.
Whoa! To me, red means "Danger" "Stop" "Alert". I don't understand the use of red for comment formatting icons, the number of comments balloon, and the "add reply " button on the item pages. I'm probably missing something and I'll probably get used to it, but it still strikes me as odd.
I don't really like it.The page looks single-color now, all the separators are barely noticeable.Information should be sorted and separated, not joined together into a blob of gray.Could you please give an option to select which view users prefer?
