All these comments acting like the 95% of the fanbase that are perfectly rational people don't already find people that harass and send death threats over this completely idiotic. Like we needed Metzen to tell us that. Most I would do is tag them on twitter and say their writing sucks and leave it at that.I still play WoW 14 years later but its writing is one thing I'll never defend. The writing team basically loves taking three left turns to make a right turn and then forget any of those left turns existed.
React at the content. Not at the creators. If you're the kind of lowlife that attacks the creators of content, you really should reflect on your own life choices. Lashing out at the ones who wrote it only makes you seem like you're fighting an internal conflict, and losing it dramatically. There's a difference between being critical and being a jackass because you need your gaming life to be perfect.
I love how they tried to compliment nu star wars. People didn't hate those movies because they're "toxic", but because they were awful movies. Spin it all you want, nu wars is garbage.
I love that people commented on this in a manner that cements Metzan's points. You should really take a moment to reflect if you can't even process and respond to these fairly benign observations without throwing another tantrum.
I do agree with Metzen, targetting Christie (though not a fan of her writting from what ive heard but thats little so cant make a proper judgment ) or anyone specificly is wrong, hell a team decided the story, heck i utterly despise the story and have discussed it with people as to why here and there and anything beyond it has currently left unmotivated.I think Star wars is a good example when the asian actress got loads of hate and threats, she didn't create her role, she merely played it yet she received humongous hate for it just for playing a part that was pre-designed.All in all i want to say this, if you dislike a story or a characters just voice your displeasure about it in a healthy manner and not by spouting hatred and threats towards people, show them you disagree with what they made and sure be vocal about it but bring valid points don't send death threats and vile messages. As it stand i stil don't like the story, sure the cinematics are cool, but with the story behind it so.. uhm cheap and shock factor-ish it falls on deaf ears for me, this is the first time in fourteen years im not excited for an expansion and this somewhat saddens me.But maybe ill find other parts or other little stories more interesting, the war itself however has been a dissapointment and i'll most likely avoid it as much as i can unless left without a choice. (aka the murder hobo route) Guess ill be a pirate for this expansion.
(@TheInterviewer, not Metzen) If you believe women in western civilization are generaly more oppressed than men I automaticly assume you're a giant tool. Stop teaching your daughter that she's a perpetual victim of a society out to get her and other women alike.I thought TLJ was bad, but violently hating Rian Johnson is pretty sad, though critique is more than fair game. Actually tried to suck up on some of the positive vibes Metzen had, but reality is just so cynical and it inflicts the mind of most people, especially on the internet where every one of us can write what we want without any kind of social repercussions.Still love you Metzen, keep being you.-Regards, a fan
There is toxicity in the community. There is toxicity in every fandom. There are also people who call anything they don't like toxic or "harassment".There is never an excuse for things like death threats or generally being a massive !@#$%^&. It's idiotic to say the least. It also seems like the amount of people like that are always thrown out of proportions however to fit a narrative; while people with actual criticism are counted among them. Fake news is everywhere & game journalists & many in the industry itself have a dense history of throwing gamers as a whole under the bus. It's hard to know who & what to believe with anything like this to be honest. It could be argued that the real toxicity has come from the various groups who have poisoned any hope of meaningful discussion, or even general discussion for that matter around gaming & other forms of entertainment & art.
I'm really glad he had the courage to talk about these things, especially toxic fandom. I was shocked to hear about Teldrassil's eventual fate but, rather than tweet obscenities at Christie Golden (who is a phenomenal writer) or let myself go into a rage fit, I accepted it and said goodbye in my own way. I took each of my night elf toons and spent a couple hours visiting Teldrassil: napping in the tree branches, walking around Darnassus to visit shops and NPCs, and soaking up the last few moments of peace before starting the War of Thorns content. While WoW is awesome, at the end of the day it's just a game. And if a game is causing you real-life rage or turmoil, it might behoove you to take a break.
