Nobbel87 recaps the story of Torghast and Twisting Corridors in Shadowlands, including the cinematics between Sylvanas and Anduin.
What is Torghast?
Torghast, Tower of the Damned is a tower located at the heart of
The Maw
, and is the place where the Jailer hoards his most precious souls.
Torghast, Tower of the Damned offers a new type of gameplay introduced in Shadowlands: instanced dynamic content featuring new challenges every time you visit it, with changing floor layouts and enemy mob types. Every time you enter Torghast, you will have a new experience. Torghast has many levels and the challenges within will grow stronger as you progress up the tower. To help overcome these challenges, you can gather resources as you go to increase your power temporarily.
Players looking to improve their characters will be spending a great deal of time here; Torghast is the source for players to obtain
영혼 재
, a currency needed to create customizable Legendary Armor. Torghast is also where you will find the
Runecarver
, the being responsible for creating powerful weaponry such as Frostmourne and the Helm of Domination. After unlocking the Runecarver, you can interact with it to create your own Legendary gear.
Torghast is designed to be either solo or group content. It can be entered in group sizes of 1 to 5 Players and the health of enemies will scale accordingly. As you play through Torghast, you will collect
환상령
, a currency used only in Torghast. You will also gain Anima Powers, temporary abilities that increase your power within the Tower. As you ascend the Tower, progress will become more difficult due to Torments, zone-wide effects that increase the challenge.
Torghast Introductory Story
Upon embarking on the Shadowlands story, players are immediately plunged into the Maw. We try to help Jaina, Anduin, Baine, and Thrall escape, but are foiled by the Jailer's massive army. It is only due to Anduin calling down the power of the Light are we able to escape--an action which unfortunately impresses the Jailer and foreshadows the Jailer's plans for Anduin.

Torghast Rescue Story
Once you complete the Covenant Campaign quest

, Bolvar will have a new set of quests for you. Initially, these were quite staggered at Shadowlands launch, but once Twisting Corridors opened, you could complete more steps per week.

In this quest series, we venture back into Torghast to save our leaders, eventually rescuing Jaina, Thrall, and Baine (and acquiring a decent amount of Soul Ash on the side). Here are some interesting observations from Nobbel87 on the story beats:
Some have been wondering if Calia Menethil, sister to Arthas Menethil is actually Taelia's mother but the information we have about Calia’s lost family doesn’t really line up with the timeframe of Bolvar and Taelia...not to mention that there’s no recognition here at all (in the quest). You’d imagine that if Bolvar was Calia’s lost love, there’d be more of a reaction so I think it’s safe to say that that speculation has been buried.
The torment of Torghast will haunt them, the things experienced and seen inside best not repeated. Although admitedly, i would have loved it if they’d done an audio drama on their time in the Maw. That cutscene with Bolvar exploring the tower and just hearing the torment they had to endure was bone chilling. Imagine that, but then in a full blown story...would be pretty epic if not a bit sadistic.
Torghast is actually a huge moment for Thrall. The former Warchief of the Horde has been having trouble connecting to the elements ever since he took care of Garrosh back in Warlords of Draenor. The emotional turmoil of placing Garrosh in charge of the Horde and all that followed after muddied his connection to the elements so much to the point that he passed on the Doomhammer and leadership of the Earthen Ring to the shaman of legend in Legion. We’ve just seen him swing his weapon around or throw his axe away or bonk people on the head with a crossbow but here...right here and now the elements respond to his call. He even does his earth grabby hand thing and with his aid, we’re able to save the shaman.
Anduin's Story and Cinematics
However, Anduin has been taken deeper into the tower and he's harder to rescue. In his time in the Maw, we see Sylvanas reveal her master plan to Anduin, which he immediately challenges.
Sylvanas offers Anduin a bargain to willingly serve the Jailer as he would be a formidable weapon for their side. Anduin, as expected, refuses and demands some answers from Sylvanas. In a moment of apparent honesty (although one never knows with Sylvanas), she tells Anduin that nothing is fair and she wants to break this predetermined cycle, expressing bitterness at both her chosen path in life as well as the Arbiter choosing paths for everyone in death.
Sylvanas: I do hope you've settled in. The accommodations are a bit...sparse, I know.
Anduin: Where are the others? Are they safe?
Sylvanas: Safe? No, I wouldn't say any of them are...safe.
Anduin: I am so tired of your games.
Sylvanas: As you wish.
Sylvanas: No more secrets. No more lies. You are a weapon we will use to achieve our ends.
Anduin: I will not become an instrument of death.
Sylvanas: So you favor...life, is that it? That momentary flicker. Every cruel second spent delaying the inevitable in an endless war that you, like every Wrynn before you, will not survive.
Sylvanas: You know the truth. Nothing is fair. Not life, not death.
Sylvanas: So we're going to tear it all down.
Anduin: And what purpose will that serve? Everyone suffers, Sylvanas. But destroying everything will not take away the pain.
Sylvanas: Ah, you misunderstand. We're breaking a system that has always been flawed, and remaking it into one that is just.
Anduin: Do you expect me to believe that, after all this time, you've been fighting for justice?
Sylvanas: How can I convince you? From our first breath to our last, every decision is made for us. Then the afterlife decides what eternity we must endure. We can't even choose who we... We couldn't control anything. But through the Jailer, control of our fate will at last be possible.
Anduin: Look around you! At what, and who you've joined. What makes you believe you're not just a weapon to achieve his ends?
Sylvanas: You have a choice to consider. Join us willingly...or be made to serve.
Anduin: I thought you believed in free will, Sylvanas.
Sylvanas: We've never had free will, Little Lion. But that...is about to change.
Bolvar later calls us back as he feels a horrible darkness rising in Torghast, sensing a new mourneblade forged.
Sylvanas and The Jailer oversee a Mawsworn crafting a weapon.
Sylvanas: Sire Denathrius has been taken prisoner. What is our plan to recover him?
Jailer: Every soul has its purpose. Denathrius has fulfilled his.
Jailer: We must forge our next weapon.
Sylvanas: He is not ready.
Jailer: Then a more direct approach is necessary. We have not come this far for you to falter now. You know what must be done.
The scene changes to Anduin, still kept prisoner. Sylvanas approaches.
Anduin: Ah... there she is again. You know, these endless lectures of yours...
Sylvanas: ... have failed to convince you. Regardless, the conversation is over. One way or another, we will have have you.
Sylvanas: So I will offer this... one last time. Join our cause, or be made to serve.
Anduin: What kind of choice is that? Why even give me...
Anduin: ... It's the choice you never had. Despite all your grand designs, there's still some shred of your mortality haunting you. As if the Banshee Queen hasn't entirely eclipsed the Ranger-General.
Sylvanas: Don't.
Anduin: Now I understand why you brought me here. Why you tried so hard to persuade me. Because if you can get me to let go of hope, you finally can too.
Sylvanas: Enough!
Sylvanas points a weapon at Anduin, which looks very similar to a runeforged version of Shalamayne.
Sylvanas: Submit! You are only making this harder on yourself.
Anduin: Not harder on me... right now, you, with all the power... how would you use it?
Sylvanas: I've not come this far to falter now.
Anduin: Then why do you hesitate?
Anduin: Make your choice, Sylvanas Windrunner.
The cinematic ends with a standoff between Anduin and Sylvanas, in a pose reminiscent of Arthas with Frostmourne. Do you think Sylvanas goes ahead with the Jailer's plan, or backs down after the camera fades to black? It really does look like the Jailer is trying to turn Anduin down a similar path as Arthas. And we can start to see some cracks in Sylvanas' unerring confidence, as she's very hesitant to follow the Jailer's orders.
The line " ... It's the choice you never had" also answers Sylvanas' unfinished line "Then the afterlife decides what eternity we must endure. We can't even choose who we..." from the earlier cinematic No More Lies. Sylvanas, certainly dealt an unfair hand, had no control of her fate at the hands of the Lich King.
The crystal the Jailer adds to the mourneblade has sparked some discussion and here is Nobbel's thoughts:
The blue crystal added to the weapon sparked some discussion, some speculation on what the Jailer added. I’m personally of the mindset that this is something like a Soulkeeper, the thing Ven’ari gave us to save souls from the maw. It’s a container to hold souls in and considering that a mourneblade has the ability to steal souls, that just makes the most sense to me but i’ve also heard cool ideas like it being Arthas’ soul infused into the weapon. All the same, Shalamayne (assuming this is Shalamayne and not just a copy) has been drastically changed and that’s not the first time either.
It started as two separate magical elven blades, Shalla'tor and Ellemayne, gifted to Varian by Jaina as he was dealing with being split apart by Onyxia. While confronting the black dragon, she blasted him, magicced his two separate halves back into one and so too did the blade. Anduin got it after visiting the Broken Shore, the place where his father was blown up by Gul’dan, and a golden glow now remains on the weapon. The weapon featured prominently in the Battle for Azeroth launch cinematic, and then Saurfang borrowed it for his mak’gora with Sylvanas, delivering that wound on her face. Now it’s a mourneblade, a dark fate pushed in his face by the banshee queen.
Follow-up Quests and Oribos Dialogue
Following that revelation, the Jailer tries to tear into Bolvar's mind using the Helm of Domination:
You were to herald my coming. Instead, you defied me! A failure. Like those who came before you!
Father, resist him! Do not let him win!
Fight, highlord! We’re with you!
I will claim what is mine! Death comes for you all!
Hold on Bolvar! just a little more!
Here, the Jailer has some
very
interesting lines about the Lich Kings, calling all of them failures who defied his plans. This further strengthens the link in
Enemy Infiltration
that the Nathrezim have been working with the Jailer all along, adding more complexity to the origin story of the Lich King. As Nobbel speculates:
"Those who came before him" is an interesting line. Before Bolvar the Lich King there was Arthas the Lich King and before Arthas placed the Helm of Domination on his head, there was simply the Lich King.
In the past, full credit to this was given to Kil’jaeden, the dreadlords, and the Burning Legion but they’ve now added an extra layer to that. The origin of the helmet and Frostmourne comes from the domain of death, from the jailer tormenting the Runecarver and ripping out the designs. There’s speculation that the Dreadlords are actually agents of his, but regardless of how the connection happened, we know that there’s a connection to be drawn between the Jailer and the creation of the Lich King.
Arthas was defeated which might just be the failure he’s talking about. Or perhaps was Arthas somehow aware of the threat of the Jailer? Able to hold back his control and taunt us along the way to the top of Icecrown to end him, rather than overwhelm us with the might of the Scourge?
Perhaps that’s the reason why the jailer is so interested in Anduin as well. The boy-king has some similarities to Arthas, some even go as far as to try and suggest that Varian’s not his real dad. Is there something in an Arthas-type character, in an Anduin-type character that makes them invaluable for the Jailer's plans? Once again we see him hooking up someone with a mourneblade, what’s the motivation?
Following the final quest, there is also an interesting conversation between Taelia, Jaina, and Calia about the Lich King:
Taelia: I'm so relieved you're safe, Lord Admiral. I can't imagine the horrors you and the others endured.
Jaina: Thank you, Taelia. The Maw is... bereft of hope. I've only experienced such emptiness once before. When I faced Arthas in Icecrown.
Calia: The specter of my brother hangs over all of us like a shroud. His choices were his own, though it does seem his fate was shaped in part by the hand of the Jailer.
Taelia: My father's fate as well. The helm... that blade... were they instruments of the Jailer all along?
Jaina: The runes on Frostmourne were a type of magic not seen on Azeroth before the Lich King. But that same power is woven into the very fabric of the Maw... and Torghast.
Calia: Arthas and Bolvar were not the only ones touched by that dark influence. The blade claimed many lives. Many souls.
Jaina: We cannot allow it to claim Anduin as well.
With all the parallels made between Anduin and Arthas, as well as Arthas' prominent role in
Afterlives: Bastion
(which was the first indication that Frostmourne was tied to the Maw), do you think Arthas will make an appearance in Shadowlands?
What is Twisting Corridors?
The Twisting Corridors is a special Torghast mode that resembles the acclaimed Mage Tower Challenges at the end of Legion. There are some differences from normal Torghast runs:
Twisting Corridors, like the normal Torghast wings, have their difficulty measured in layers. However, unlike normal Torghast runs, each layer of Twisting Corridors has a
whopping 18 Floors
! This alone means enemies and bosses will scale even further in difficulty, but also gives you more opportunities for Anima Powers.
Twisting Corridors pulls their room designs from the normal Torghast wings, which means that you will be affected by multiple types of
Torghast Torments
, or affected by Torments in higher amounts than what is possible to get in a normal Torghast run.
There are no rewards that increase player power in Twisting Corridors. There are, however, achievements for completing each Twisting Corridors layer, as well as cosmetic rewards for reaching specific layer thresholds.
If you still need help with Twisting Corridors or clearing regular Torghast layers, we have some guides to help you out. Below you will find guides tailored to all specializations for succeeding in Twisting Corridors, including best builds, which anima powers to acquire, best talents, and much more.
