A series of new dailies in patch 10.1.5 takes us through time, correcting various anomalies in the timeways. In one, we are required to ensure Amber Kearnen's assassination happens as planned.
The Assassination of Amber Kearnen
Amber Kearnen was a high-ranking member of SI:7, the Alliance's secret service. A questgiver since Cataclysm, she played a major role in the Alliance campaign in Mists of Pandaria and was a popular character.
During the events of Legion, she was found dead in Dalaran with a knife still in her back, clutching an
Missiva dell'IR:7
. Her death motivated Lord Jorach Ravenholdt - leader of the Uncrowned - to have rogue players investigate the SI:7 during the Rogue Order Hall campaign. This led to the discovery that Master Mathias Shaw himself ordered the murder. Their investigation went on to reveal that the SI:7 had been infiltrated with Nathrezim - who had kidnapped the real Mathias Shaw and were impersonating him - it was a dreadlord, disguised as Mathias, who'd ordered the murder. Though she died, the encoded missive Amber was carrying helped uncover this conspiracy.
In the Eon's Fringe daily, Chromie seems upset by what she needs to ask. Because Amber Kearnen's assassination was the catalyst that helped uncover Mathias Shaw's impersonation, it has to happen to keep the true timeline in order.
I'm sorry to ask you to do this <name>. but Amber Kearnen needs to die.
A member of the Alliance organization Sl:7, her death was critical to uncovering that Matthias Shaw was replaced by a dreadlord during the Legions invasion.
I... need you to go to Dalaran and ensure she dies.
We'll send you in disguised. No one can know you were there.
We are disguised as a rogue, and sent to the Dalaran sewers, where we find Amber alone.
<Amber shifts into a defensive posltlon.>
You are an Uncrowned Peacekeeper? l'm here with an urgent missive or Lord Jorach Ravenholdt.
Yes. I'm with the Uncrowned.
<Amber visibly relaxes.>
Excellent. Please take me to your leaders.
There is something happening in SI:7. I think it's been infiltrated.
I have assassins after me. so I'd appreciate an escort.
<Amber throws you a small smile.>
<Assassinate Amber Kearnen.>
The player assassinates Amber, leaving her as she was found in Legion - a knife sticking out of her back, the missive that would reveal Mathias Shaw's impersonation clutched in one hand.
<Amber Kearnen lies dead at your feet, your dagger sticking out of her back.>
The Hypocrisy of Dragons
While players have assisted the Bronze Dragonflight with making sure terrible things happen to keep the "true timeline" before, this quest, in particular, is disconcerting for several reasons.
First, the Bronze's claims that certain things must happen a certain way, and commitment to making sure things never deviate from that way, doesn't always seem ironclad. In a
most recent and obvious example
, Chromie has delcared that she intends to save Nozdormu from his destined fate of becoming Murozond.
Chromie: I will find another way.
Nozdormu: There is none.
Chromie: Time encompasses all possibilities. You taught me that. I will search every timeline, every moment, until I find a solution to save you.
Nozdormu has known about his fate since he was first made the Bronze Aspect - it is a crucial part of the official timeline, the same timeline the Bronze are sworn to protect. This brings up the obvious question - if the Bronze Dragonflight are so committed to preserving the true timeline exactly as it is, then how can Chromie so casually suggest stopping one of the most important moments on that timeline - simply because she cares about the person the bad thing is happening to? It seems hypocritical - to say the least - and the inconsistency undermines the Bronze's supposed sacred duty.
To put it simply, it's hard to be told by Chromie that we must kill our friend because it's important for the timeline after watching her cheerfully declare that she will change the timeline to save hers.
Secondly, the quest fails to convince us that the assassionation itself is at all crucial to making sure the true timeline stays intact. In previous examples of mortals assisting with time anomalies, what seems to matter most is certain incidents happen - but the way they can happen is sometimes flexible. The Dark Portal must open because it caused the formation of the Alliance, brought the Horde to Azeroth, and prepared Azeroth for the invasion of the Burning Legion. Without the opening of the Dark Portal, those outcomes were impossible. In novels like the
War of the Ancients
and
Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects
, mortals are shown to make sometimes significant changes to the original timeline - the important thing each time is the outcome.
In this quest, Chromie tells us that Amber Kearnen must be assassinated because it leads to the discovery of the impersonation of Mathias Shaw. However, it's clear that helping Amber would still lead to that same discovery. In fact, Amber specifically tells us the missive is intended for Lord Jorach Ravenholdt, leader of the Uncrowned. If players helped Amber deliver the message, the discovery that Matthias Shaw had been replaced by a dreadlord would still happen - it would even still be uncovered by the same people and organization - the important part of the timeline wouldn't change.
Finally, it's simply a lot to ask of players - who at the end of the day are not trained time wardens or sworn members of the Bronze Dragonflight - to lie to a beloved character, have her smile at us trustingly, and then stab her in the back.
It's possible the natural discomfort this quest might make players feel may partly be the point. Perhaps we are meant to question the Bronze Dragonflight's approach, to make us more sympathetic to Murozond and the Infinite - who want to shatter the timeways. However, we're not entirely sure some of the quests we've been seeing on the PTR - as they are right now - are the best way to get this point across. At the very least, it feels like players should get some choice when it comes to whether or not they're prepared to murder a close friend or not, but some consistency from the Bronze and what it actually really means to "preserve the timeways" would also be very welcome.
