Early Access Launch
The World of Warcraft team has grown and gained experience and confidence, allowing Ion to not be on site for launch.
Being away was only mildly stressful, but it's a relief to feel that he's not needed and that the launch went smoothly without him on site.
How is the role of WoW Game Director different now than 8 years ago?
WoW has grown in breadth since he took over in Battle for Azeroth. Now he oversees not only The War Within but also Cataclysm Classic, Season of Discovery, Era, Hardcore, Remix, and Plunderstorm - all the sub-sections of WoW.
His job has become substantially less involved in the day-to-day creation of the games; he now guides a new group of leaders.
Chris Metzen & How WoW is Made Differently Now
The change in the structure of the team and the influx of new talent have contributed to the new feel of the game.
Instead of creating a framework for an expansion and then filling in details, they established the setting and then pursued stories that the creators wanted to tell, resulting in more earnestness and passion in the work.
The diversity of creation makes having real coordination and purposeful integration harder.
Where they are landing is having a strong creative vision that helps drive the overall arc of three expansions, while having the interstitial gaps filled in and molded by a process that empowers every voice on the team.
Warband Alts in Follower Dungeons
Incorporating Warband characters into Follower Dungeons is something they are going to look into.
There are hurdles to figure out like making sure that doesn't become the only way to play, for example, if you have your Warband in your group and they are all leveling and getting experience at the same time.
From a flavor perspective, he thinks it would be really fun.
How Blizz Decided Xal'atath was The One
Xal'atath was introduced in Legion but only interacted with one spec, but people thought the character was awesome.
When they started telling the BfA story and its interaction with the Void, they realized they could introduce all classes to her and open up future arcs for her.
She was born as a major character due to the player's reaction to her.
When they needed an Avatar of the Void she was the natural choice.
They drew on lessons learned from Shadowlands and the Jailer to build her up as a great villain.
How they chose Xal'atath's model
The Quest team designers did what felt right to them.
How Will Delves Progress in Season 2 & Beyond
Delves will evolve based on what they learn in the next few months.
Delves are a Seasonal pillar and they want to carry that forward.
There will be new Delves but they aren't sure about the details - will rewards and/or difficulties increase, probably won't just add new tiers, they may likely treat them like M+ and slide the difficulty down rather than bloating them with more tiers.
Ion doesn't know if we can still access/level Brann in Season 2.
They have focused on landing the experience at launch and will then look into how to evolve it.
The Shift to More Solo Content in The War Within
The shift towards solo content has been percolating for a while. They feel they need to do a better job of serving all of the players.
Raids, Dungeons, and PvP have been well served over the years, but for small group and solo players, there wasn't a real sense of progression and goals to work towards.
The game can be a place for social interaction, but also for solitude.
Returning Players to The War Within: Did it Work?
They want to strike a balance between serving the current players while encouraging returning players and new players.
The War Within 2025 Content Roadmap
Content Roadmap is a close-of-year thing and will look similar to what they did with Dragonflight.
Warband Currency Transfer
Can we have a transfer all currency button for Warbands? It's an excellent quality-of-life suggestion.
What makes a Great WoW Expansion (Player vs. Game Director)
The Burning Crusade was peerless because it didn't have a template. Every other expansion has come with an expectation of levels, dungeons, etc. He would love to try and recapture some of that unknown, that sense of surprise and discovery, and playing something that has not been thoroughly datamined and pre-explored and guides written and optimized, you just get to experience it organically.
A perfect expansion is a well-rounded one where all of the pieces are synergistic - Legion probably did that best.
The Upcoming Surprises of The War Within Content
Remix is likely to return.
They are going to keep exploring new ideas.
