Rextroy is no stranger
to challenges
pitting classes against one another, but his latest video sees them facing an old foe. In the Undercity Raid Challenge, 12 class-stacked teams of 8 players each face go deep behind enemy lines to assassinate
Nathanos Selvamorta
!
Of course, it wouldn't be a challenge if there weren't restrictions - this version of Nathanos only has 176k hp, so each player in the 8-person raid teams were limited to only using common and uncommon quality vendor gear sold by Stormwind City vendors, while consumables and combat resurrections were disallowed. This brought players down to around 10-15 item level and 8-10k hp, and although covenant soulbinds like
Cura dei Baccelli
and
Fantasticherie della Forgia
complicated the balance, some classes were clearly better suited to facing both the raid boss and endless supply of Undercity's
Guardiamorte Élite
city guards.
Despite being such an old NPC, the class and gear limitations made this challenge much harder than it appears!
This challenge, unlike earlier ones will be closer to a true raid challenge, because it isn't limited to a single spec. This means each class can bring tanks and healers... If they happen to have access to it.
Even if you are a pure DPS class, the challenge is tuned around being fast to complete if you have the necessary DPS, since Nathanos only have 176k hp! It is a risk and reward for hybrids to change their spec from DPS into Healers.
To make it more classic like (and for it to even be a challenge) all contenders will only be allowed to wear white and green vendor gear from Stormwind city, that you can purchase from vendors. This means you can't buy anything from Auction House, PvP vendors, or any Tier set.
The health of non tanks in each team will be about 8-10k, and their DPS and armor will be considerably weaker.
Nathanos melee hits for A LOT, about 4-6k. He also dual wields.
He casts a fear quite frequent, which makes nearby players run away.
He also has a stun, which he uses to distance himself to the target
If he is at range, he will do less normal damage than in melee, but every now and then he will use "multi shot" which is most of the time a one shot to the target and people stacking nearby. It does about 8-10k damage
Quite basic abilities, but deadly... He will also be accompanied by guards during the encounter, that will spawn in waves and do 2k melee hits aswell as range damage!
Like other raid bosses, he has a lot of quotes that he will spam during the encounter!
He will also drop some insane gear... but I won't spoil what it is!
The rules are the following:
Only vendor white / green gear
No combat ress / heroism
No consumables
Stay within the arena
You are allowed to try and skip NPCs in the encounter area (tho it might punish you later if you get feared to them) but you are NOT allowed to clear the adds before starting the encounter with Nathanos.
Well, let us see who will be victorious!
While each team took at least five attempts to improve their result, the challenge proved to be much harder than expected. For the final scores,
Warriors were wiped out with 47% of Nathanos' health remaining, simply lacking the self healing to survive both the raid boss and his minions.
Hunters were similarly raid wiped at 15% health remaining, although it appears as though a few may have moved beyond the marked "arena bounds" which could have caused more guards to spawn than intended.
Shaman made it down to 18%, but the team was quickly annihilated once their Earth Elementals were destroyed. Spacing them out better may have helped them survive a bit longer.
Death Knights were the first class to succeed, with four players remaining alive! Nathanos rewarded them by dropping some insane loot, including a
Ascia Scheggiata
.
Rogues were picked off one by one, and although several mobs were able to be CC'd with
Tramortimento
, their best attempt wiped at 20% remaining.
Monks also failed at 20% remaining, although it's interesting that their best attempt used 2 Brewmaster tanks and 6 Windwalkers, rather than utilize any Mistweaver healers.
Warlocks saw success with 7 players remaining, thanks in large part to their heavy AoE, personal survivability, and pets.
Mages made great use of
Anello di Ghiaccio
and other temporary CC to hold off the onslaught of guards, but failed at 7% remaining.
Priests simply did not have the tools to handle the challenge, getting wiped out in the shortest attempts with 55% of Nathanos' health remaining.
Demon Hunters came close, using 5 Vengeance tanks to hold back the onslaught, but ultimately failed at 11% remaining.
Paladins made great use of their anti-undead tools, strong self healing, and burst damage - completing the challenge very quickly and with 8 players remaining.
Druids just barely managed to survive with only 3 players remaining, and although their sole tank died very early, their shape-changing flexibility allowed the group to hold out long enough to secure the win.
Surprisingly, only 4 classes managed to complete the challenge, and not all for the same reason. This could certainly be changed by adjusting the item level restrictions
