Our Preservation Evoker Guide Writer, Voulk, took the
new 30yd cast range
for a test drive during last week's Dragonflight raid testing. Check out how Preservation fared and gather practical insights as we explore whether recent changes were enough to propel this new healer to new heights.
A few weeks ago Preheat and
I wrote an article on the problems Evoker might face as a 25 yard range spec
. Shortly after, Blizzard agreed to test a 30 yard range for Preservation specifically. The change made it to Beta this week and we were able to get our first proper raid testing in. Let's talk about how it went. While this article will be fairly critical, it should be said that Evoker has the potential to be quite a fun spec and I enjoy playing it a lot - it's just in need of a few tweaks before the expansion goes live. For those keeping track at home,
Evoker can now heal 56% of the same area as a 40 yard healer.

Raid Stacked? Evoker Happy... Kind of.
Raid testing kicked off with the first two bosses of the raid -
Eranog
and
Terros
. These fights are both pretty stacked and, while the range was occasionally an annoyance, it was fairly playable. They were also very fun bosses.
Dathea l'Ascesa
was significantly more challenging with area denial making
Abbraccio Lussureggiante
a risky cast during dangerous damage and the fight requiring a spread raid that left the spec struggling to contribute. She's no Halondrus but you're already starting to feel the need for the raid to play around you.
Custode della Progenie Diurna
and
Kurog Totem Truce
fell into the middle - the spec was playable but played at a disadvantage relative to other healing specs. The kit is very fun to play, but it's difficult to apply it to the fight because of the range restraint and long cast times. It's not so much a challenge as it is a frustration.
The Hazards of
Abbraccio Lussureggiante
Raid Spread? Evoker unhappy.
Abbraccio Lussureggiante
is both our strongest emergency single target heal and a key piece of mobility. It's also very fun to use. The downside is that it can get you into trouble a lot since it moves you to the target. If you've preplanned it's use then it's fine since you can plan for a moment of the fight where the movement won't get you killed. However, if you find you need to use it
on the fly
to keep someone alive then you might find it lands you in trouble as often as it saves someone. Preplanning
Abbraccio Lussureggiante
isn't a bad use for it (especially given
Richiamo di Ysera
) but it does leave us a little light on fast single target healing. It's notably always safe as a self-cast.
Range Aside - Other Takeaways From Raid Testing
The range continues to be a real issue, but the spec itself has some really cool stuff otherwise.
Soffio del Sogno
feels very impactful,
Anomalia Temporale
unlocks a lot of combos through
Sfera Risonante
and the spec animations are top tier. Preservation also has a lot of varied talent builds and there's a lot of room to specialize in different aspects of the spec.
Anomalia Temporale
is probably a little strong right now (exacerbated by absorbs being potent in mostly overhealed heroic tests)
Ciclo della Vita
is very awkward to get value from since you need some really sustained damage for the 15s delay to still be getting value. Might be a little niche as it currently stands and they might consider a 10s delay on the healing instead. It's likely to feel better in any case once we're able to better plan out the fight.
Stato di Flusso
has too low an uptime to be worth a two point investment. Empower Spells had their cooldown increased a lot in the last build and the duration on
Stato di Flusso
procs should be increased to match.
Salvataggio
has endless potential as a life saving tool and is very fun to use, though isn't likely to be something you cast every pull.
Preservation contributes a decent amount of passive DPS through
Adattamento Scarlatto
,
Soffio di Fuoco
and casting
Fiamma Vivente
during downtime for
Detonazione dell'Essenza
procs.
The spec is quite easy to pick up and do moderately well on, but it also has plenty of depth through managing
Detonazione dell'Essenza
procs,
Scintilla di Consapevolezza
, and
Eco
.
Tradeoffs for Preservation: Major Downsides With Few Upsides
Blizzard mentioned in their blue post that tools like
Volo Sospeso
,
Abbraccio Lussureggiante
,
Eco
and
Salvataggio
should be flexible and powerful enough to compensate for Preservations limited range. In practice they're a decent counter to the specs long casts but not enough to handle such a low range.
Eco
is a great candidate to be made instant cast,
Salvataggio
is more of a niche utility tool rathe than clear mobility and
Abbraccio Lussureggiante
is fantastic but can be dangerous. If these are our primary tools then they should be made more frequent, and less restrictive (the targeting can be a bit weird, but empower spells could be made to work while Hovering).
The other issue is that the spec doesn't really have any upsides right now. We can cast very few of our key spells while moving outside of
Volo Sospeso
which only enables half of them. We're well beaten in this department by Resto Druid and Mistweaver Monk who combine strong mobility spells with frequent instant casts while maintaining a 40 yard+ range. We're also only performing
ok
in our niche around healing a stacked raid through
Soffio del Sogno
,
Volo del Sogno
,
Anomalia Temporale
and
Bocciolo di Smeraldo
/
Ciclo della Vita
. Tuning is ongoing but right now you won't feel more mobile, or like you do more healing than any other healing spec.
Blizzard envision a mid range, mobile healer that can quickly move around an encounter and deliver healing where it's needed. This tends to be a mismatch with modern fight design that emphasizes precise, coordinated movement. Creating sufficient upside to balance out such a severe downside introduces it's own balance problems where the spec wavers from overly strong on fights where the raid is stacked to overly weak on high movement or very spread fights. It's good for spec strength to differ on a fight by fight basis but this would be too extreme a case. Even unlimited mobility is also a limited solution on some fights due to fixed positions and in the inability to be constantly on the move. A 30 yard range was a great step in the right direction, and it's more than fine for Evoker to do
more
healing within a 30 yard radius but it should be able to reach 40 for it to compete as a healer.
