The Elemental Bonds questline is finally up on the PTR and we've taken the liberty of doing it all so you can spoil yourselves silly. As a point of note, this questline is the main lore point behind 4.2 and it features both the villains as well as the heroes of
Terre del Fuoco
.
As the Blizzard preview teased, this quest chain focuses on Aggra and Thrall both as lovers and heroes trying to save the world. Having seen it in-depth, we can confirm that it focuses on both traditional and nontraditional enemies; as much of the questline is Thrall overcoming his fears and desires as a mortal being with limited time on Azeroth as it is fighting elementals.
To help showcase this truly epic quest, we've compiled a YouTube video of all the scenes from start to finish and we also wrote up more in-depth guide. You can find both in this post.
However, if you don't want to be spoiled, close this page
now
. Even the comments will probably be rife with debate or speculation on this quest chain and its implementation, outcome, and so on. In short, it's not our fault if you spoil yourselves. We've warned you
.
Il vertice di Nordrassil
"We've gathered here today to heal this world that we've sacrificed so much to save. For the first time, the Earthen Ring and the Cenarion Circle reunite to restore this great tree, thereby healing the whole of Azeroth."
The questline starts out by sending you to talk to Thrall in
Monte Hyjal
. Once you arrive, you'll discover that
Thrall
,
Aggra
,
Nozdormu
,
Malfurion Grantempesta
,
Ysera
, and other heroes have gathered in Hyjal to talk about restoring the World Tree and ultimately saving the world. Unfortunately, nothing is ever as easy as it seems, and they soon find themselves attacked by
Maggiordomo Elmocervo
and the druids he's corrupted. They trap Thrall in elements, turning them against him to feed on his emotions, and send his spirit off into the planes then disappear in a burst of flames.
Ysera will gloomily predict Thrall's death, but Aggra remains unconvinced and asks you to go seek him out with her.
Legami Elementali: Dubbio
"Clever fleshling... soaring in-between the winds of fate. Yes, I know the one you seek... the orc-father... Earthbinder... I sense him nearby - raging within a tempest of his own fear. You may go to him at your peril."
You start the next leg of the series by talking to Aggra and she teleports you to
Uldum
. Once there, you'll talk to a wind elemental named
Ciclonas
and he'll whisk you across the desert up to a platform where you'll find Thrall enveloped in winds. Elementals will be spawning everywhere on the platform and you'll have to defend Thrall from them. To do this, you'll gain a meter which you have to watch closely; each time you kill an elemental, you'll fill it up some more. All you have to do is fill up the meter to save Thrall.
Before you can completely rescue him, though, his essence will depart from Uldum and you'll have to talk to Aggra to find out where it went.
Legami Elementali: Desiderio
"Your world-shaman has become a vortex of longing and desire. See how his heart devours everything within its proximity? Tread lightly, traveler, lest you too, be consumed."
Thrall is trapped in
Vashj'ir
next, drowning deep under the ocean's surface. Talk to the water elemental,
Idrius
, to begin the next series of quests.
Similar to the ones from the quest prior, you will have to save Thrall from elementals. Kill elementals to make your meter increase; like before, when it increases, it'll save. These elementals, however, have a far worse ability than the previous ones:
Mal di Cuore
. This will one shot you if you don't stun them or interrupt it, so make sure you're watching out. Otherwise they are fairly easy and they don't hit hard.
Much like the quest's name--
Desire
--implies, this series is all about what Thrall desired in life but never got. If you watch where Thrall is entombed, you'll occasionally see cut scenes of these desires. In one of them, he puts down his weapon and makes up with
Re Varian Wrynn
himself. In another, he has a family and is happy.
After you've killed enough elementals, you'll save Thrall temporarily. Aggra will then begin to be pulled away by the current and you'll have to save her. Simply find where she is, click on her, and she'll start swimming back. Once you've made it back to safety, she'll talk about the things in life he deserved but never got. Before she can finish, however, Thrall's spirit will move again and you'll both have to give chase.
Legami Elementali: Pazienza
"His spirit is strong for a creature of mortal flesh. He fascinates me and I am loathe to give him up. Still, I can hear the cry of a distant heart echoing through the labyrinth between worlds. It's the cry of a lover's heart I hear and great Therazane has not forgotten what it was to love."
Thrall has moved on to
Rocciafonda
this time and Aggra will help you get there. Fittingly enough, Thrall has been turned into stone now. You must bargain with
Therazane
to get her permission to find Thrall. She eventually gives it despite wanting to keep the shaman with her, noting that his spirit is so strong for a being of flesh. You'll soon discover that Thrall is happy in this realm and state and has become reluctant to give up this stoic way of life. Once again you'll face elementals, similar to the ones before in that they can one shot you if you're not careful. Kill enough of them to move on to the next part of the quest.
Throughout this encounter, Thrall and Aggra argue frequently. Thrall is very calm and tranquil due to his new form and Aggra is quite affected by this. He keeps telling her he's patient and she keeps telling him to hurry up. It's really a cute characterization of these two and works quite well to offset the severity of the events going on.
As par the course, Thrall is saved only to be lost again. This time, however, it's much worse according to Aggra. He's gone to Ragnaros' domain.
Legami Elementali: Furia
"I can feel the rage of this place pressing down on me. We won't have much time before they're onto us, let's begin. There... I see him, bathed in flame. I can feel waves of fury radiating from his core. Such rage, his anger alone could burn us to cinders."
The questline ends with Thrall finally succumbing to his endless anger--for the deeds done to
Cairne Zoccolo Sanguinario
in particular. To match this rage, he's directly in the
Terre del Fuoco
, submerged in lava.
This is the final part of the quest and, while it keeps the principles of the elemental fights from previous quests, it's a little different. In particular, these elementals hit harder just on melee swings and do much more damage. Aggra will also call out that her totems are being attacked and are losing strength; all you have to do is attack and kill elementals near the totem that's being damaged to restore it. If you don't, your meter will start depleting and you'll have to start over, so it's imperative to keep it up.
Throughout the fight, Thrall will grow angrier and angrier. He'll shout about the atrocities done to him and all the problems he's had while Aggra tries to comfort him to no avail. After you free him, you will get a quest for four cape rewards. After that, you'll be sent back to Hyjal for a final cutscene.
Legami Elementali: Il Giuramento
"In the face of this cataclysm, I've seen how truly fleeting our lives can be. And I, for one, will not waste another second of mine."
Finally saved, Thrall and Aggra talk. In particular, they talk about their love. Having been through this ordeal, they make vows to be each other's mates. Fireworks and flower petals fall from the sky.
And of course, Thrall thanks you and asks you to accept one of the four following as a gift:
Mantello del Dubbio
Mantello della Pazienza
Mantello del Desiderio
Mantello della Furia
