One of the characters being explored in the War Within is none other than Magni Bronzebeard, who we haven't heard from much since Battle for Azeroth. Magni is further explored in the Ringing Deeps, the second zone of the War Within, and an important event happens to him!
WARNING: The War Within Story Spoilers in this post!
Previously - The War Within Pre-Patch
Previously, we learned during the
Radiant Cry War Within Pre-Patch Event
that while important figures of Azeroth have been receiving visions from the planet, Magni Bronzebeard - who was made Speaker of Azeroth - has not been able to communicate with her in a long time. This has left him devastated, as Azeroth is the one who made him into this being of diamond, and thus unable to feel the warmth of his dwarven kin.
Magni: "Speaker of Azeroth". Bah. She hasn't been speaking to me.
Magni: After all I gave her, she left me like... this. Unable to feel the warmth of my kin's embrace.
Magni: So, let's be clear. I'm doing this for all of you. Not for her.
Keen players have also observed that Magni has a different model in The War Within - His previous glowy, ivory white sheen is much more dull, making him look almost like an earthen himself.
Magni in the Ringing Deeps
Magni is further explored in the Ringing Deeps zone. During the zone, you can interact with him, who has new interaction voice lines - Still showing his displeasing at Azeroth ignoring him for so long.
"For Azeroth... pshh."
"Well, out with it."
"I'm speaking for no one these days."
"Look, I'm not dead yet!"
"I got not counsel for you... no advice."
"Speak up."
"Even now, I'm bound to serve Azeroth."
We originally learned in the
Isle of Dorn questline
that the machinery responsible for recharging the Earthen after they enter stasis has become damaged due to an unknown event with the last known access being 5000 years ago.
We learn more about the machine in the Ringing Deeps - The Machine Speakers of the zone are responsible for its maintenance, but they're not returning from their shifts in the mines of the Deeps. While we investigate why this could be with the help of Magni and his grandson, Dagran Thaurissan II, we learn that the mines are being raided by Skardyn.
For those not in the known, Skardyn are cursed descendants of Dark Iron Dwarves who survived the siege of Grim Batol during the War of the Three Hammers. These Dwarves were servants of Queen Mogdud, the wife of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan... and one of the previous wielders of Xal'atath. The fact that we're seeing Skardyn so far away from Grim Batol confirms that Skardyn can be used for any earthen or earthen-adjacent that are corrupted by the Void (or maybe just by Xal'atath herself).
As we advance through the questline, we learn that the current High Speaker of the Ringing Deeps, the leader of the Machine Speakers, has seemingly found a way to repair the Awakening Machine - By brokering a deal with none other than Xal'atath.
High Speaker Eirich: You speak the truth? Your artifact will repair the Awakening Machine?
Xal'atath: It will perfect the machine. Your struggle, your suffering will be at an end. All will awaken... because of you.
High Speaker Eirich: Because of me...
Xal'atath: Is there a price you wouldn't pay?
Xal'atath: Your people will be restored. Reborn. Improved. And they will laud you as their savior.
High Speaker Eirich: Yes... yes! All earthen will awaken!
However, it turns out that the Awakening Machine has been indeed turned on... but is converting earthen in stasis into skardyn following Xal'atath's bidding! During the final portion of the Ringing Deeps questline, we enter the Halls of Awakening, the area where the Awakening Machine is hosted at, and confront High Speaker Eirich.
At the end of the scenario, we find a cutscene and are teleported back to the main city of the Ringing Deeps... but the contents of the cutscene script are very interesting. Magni is once again turned into flesh and bone!
Magni sacrifices his infused crystalline energies to cleanse the void corruption of the earthen within the awakening chamber.
In the aftermath, he appears as a lifeless statue. Moments later, the shell breaks.
We see he is restored to being flesh and bone again. Reunited with his daughter and grandson, he greets the first earthen to awaken from the machine.
Once the cutscene ends, we're suddenly teleported back to Gundargaz, the main city of the Ringing Deeps. We expect to see more from the cutscene once The War Within is actually live, but Magni is there with his old model from before he got transformed into stone. Welcome back to being flesh, Magni!
We have datamined a new Dwarf model this build, but it is currently unknown where this model is from. This does look a lot like Magni, though, and could be a base for his new, post stone model.
