Former Lead Narrative Designer Dave "Fargo" Kosak announced he is leaving Blizzard Entertainment after 12 years at the company. While Kosak was best known for his recent Hearthstone work, serving as the face of the game in popular announcement trailers, he was also responsible for many beloved stories and characters in World of Warcraft.
His new company is
Deviation Games
, led by CEO and Co-Founder David Anthony, Producer for Call of Duty on Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox. Kosak will serve as Creative Director for upcoming secret projects.
Dave Kosak worked on WoW's story since 2009, also joining the Hearthstone team in early Legion. His short story
"Edge of Night"
is still relevant a decade later as players try to understand the nature of Sylvanas' pact with the Jailer. Another one of his creations, Wrathion, continues to be a
fun enigma
across several expansions, surfacing in Visions of N'Zoth to help us take down Ny'alotha.
Before working at Blizzard, Kosak wrote the
Flintlocke comic series
, featuring Fargo and Flintlocke, a confused Warrior who wants to be a Hunter and manages to annoy Ironforge in spite of being a dwarf. His legacy will live on in WoW through the following items:
Gravy
: One of the main characters in
Flintlocke vs The Horde
, currently serving as a bartender in Orgrimmar.
Fargo Spezzaselce
sends Alliance players to Twilight Highlands, which is an odd choice after he's nuked Stormwind in a previous installment of
Flintlocke's Guide to Azeroth
.
Rok'tar
sends Horde players to Twilight Highlands and is the main character of the follow-up series
Flintlocke vs. The Horde
.
Flintlocke has a number of items named after him, such as
Sparapicchiatrice di Spezzaselce
which looks like a melee weapon and fits with Flintlocke's combat style.
Spararatti di Spezzaselce
references his signature "Chuck-Shot" which was made with blasting powder and an angry woodchuck. This enchant makes your ranged weapon periodically spit out a critter.
Archibugio di Spezzaselce
: When looting corpses, Flintlocke also had to remember to pick up the Chuck-Shot dislodged in his enemies. It was quite dirty, leading to the flavor text "This weapon has clearly never been cleaned. Ever."
Pantaloni da Pilota di Spezzaselce
: References Flintlocke's debatable skills in flying a "diridgerdabler-able... diriger-jib-gibjer-lobbler... BLIMP" which eventually crashes.
Comandante Lo Ping
: This badge vendor is named after Lo Ping, who enjoyed hoarding tons of items.
We here at Wowhead enjoyed chatting with Dave Kosak--some of our earliest Wowhead News interviews were with him on Warcraft's quest design, and we'd chat at each BlizzCon even after he left the WoW team. He was always down to earth, affable, and humorous, bringing a unique infectious energy to his work especially in the Hearthstone reveal videos. We wish him the best of luck at the new game company!
