Cataclysm tore the world asunder and redefined Azeroth--Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor will never be the same. However, as exciting as it's been to watch this all unfold, it also means that it's harder than it was before to get back into the groove of things if you have taken a break. Even starting a new alt can be a mystifying journey since all the zones have been returned and the landscape changed. Darkshore was hit with tragedy, the Barrens is split in two, and tensions have never been higher in Silverpine Forest. There’s too much to take in and it's hard to know where to start sometimes.
But don't worry--that's what we're here for, right? In addition to having
a lengthy guide to the Cataclysm changes
in our Cataclysm section of Wowhead, this post will get you up to speed on the general leveling progression of World of Warcraft for levels 1-60.
Find out where to go, what zones you shouldn't pass up, and more after the break! We've even included some fun items to hunt for to give you reasons to check out certain zones over others!
Also, if you're a veteran leveler with multiple alts under your belt, consider sharing your tips in the comments and let us know what zone was your personal favorite for leveling in this expansion. Maybe even tell us what you've recently leveled or what you're leveling next.
Eastern Kingdoms: Alliance (Dwarves, Gnomes, Humans, Worgen)
One of the bigger changes with Cataclysm is that both continents have been streamlined into self-contained leveling areas. This means that you should be able to level from levels 1 to 60 (or, more realistically, 58) without having to switch continents. For that reason, this guide assumes players want both convenience and speed. It will direct you to nearby zones that are still in Eastern Kingdoms so that there is as little downtime in-between zones as possible.
Strictly speaking, there is no reason you can't head on over to Kalimdor to check out what has changed. However, we've chosen to group zones together by location and leveling flow rather than level requirements this time around.
Eastern Kingdoms: Part One (1-12)
Città di Gilneas
(1-12)
Foresta di Elwynn
(1-12)
Dun Morogh
(1-12)
As you start your journey, remember that each starting zone has been tweaked to streamline questing for Cataclysm. If you are starting a new character, though, consider making a Worgen. The Worgen starting zone is one of the best zones in the game to this date; it offers a substantial look at the history of an entire race. It's a treat for any player, new and old.
Eastern Kingdoms: Part Two (10-35)
Suggested Route
Marche Occidentali
(10-15)
Montagne Crestarossa
(15-20)
Boscovespro
(20-25)
Rovotorto Settentrionale
(25-30)
Capo di Rovotorto
(30-35)
Alternate Route
Loch Modan
(10-20)
Paludi Grigie
(20-25)
Altopiani d'Arathi
(25-30)
Entroterre
(30-35)
After leveling to 12, you're able to choose their next zone. This zone choice is important; it will lead you into subsequent connected zones until your late thirties. The zone progression is mostly about convenience; Westfall is near Goldshire and Loch Modan is close to where the Dwarves and Gnomes begin their journey. From Loch Modan, you can go to Wetlands and then hit up Arathi Highlands and if you've chosen to go the Redridge route you can explore Duskwood and Stranglethorn Vale. Paths won't start converging again until around level 35, where all players are routed into Western and Eastern Plaguelands.
However, because Redridge is such a great experience after the expansion and because Stranglethorn has changed much more than Arathi Highlands, we suggest that those who start in Dun Murogh take the tram in Ironforge to Stormwind and check out what's happening in the farmstead! From a reference to CSI (
Tenente Horatio Laine
) to a severely decreased Defias presence, Westfall is an awesome journey. There is also a shocking ending to Westfall that we won't spoil no matter how badly we want to.
Eastern Kingdoms: Part Three (35-60)
Terre Infette Occidentali
(35-40)
At this point, Eastern Kingdom's choices end--the paths merge as you're invited to check out what has become of the remnents of Lordaeron after the fall of the Lich King. Western Plaguelands is a surprisingly vibrant area now, transformed as it heals from the Scourge invasion. However, there are still problems to face; the zone is embroiled in a conflict of factions due to its close proximity to the Forsaken outposts.
Terre Infette Orientali
(40-45)
When starting out in Eastern Plaguelands, players will also be able to do a series of introductory quests with
Carovana di Fiona
. Make sure these initial quests for the caravan are done right away to unlock the quest
Amuleto fortunato di Fiona
which grants players a buff called
Amuleto Fortunato di Fiona
. This will cause a
Scorte Nascoste
to drop occasionally from EPL mobs; each one has a chance to contain the elusive
Ser Vermino
, a new vanity larva pet. Higher level players often end up having to farm him, so getting this blessing now is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. You will be able to farm for the pet while you level and complete other quests in the zone.
Maleterre
(44-48)
Gorgia Rovente
(47-51)
Steppe Ardenti
(49-52)
Palude del Dolore
(51-55)
Terre Devastate
(55-60)
After this, you're are conveniently brought to the Dark Portal where the first expansion will start.
Eastern Kingdoms: Horde (Blood Elves, Undead)
Eastern Kingdoms: Part One (1-12)
Boschi di Cantoeterno
(1-12)
Radure di Tirisfal
(1-12)
If you choose to roll a Blood Elf, you may want to just do the starting quests to level 5 then head to the capital city to teleport to Undercity. Otherwise, you'll be missing out. The redone Forsaken starting area is haunting and builds up to the events that transpire in Silverpine Forest as well as Hillsbrad. It's great!
Eastern Kingdoms: Part Two (10-35)
Terre Spettrali
(10-20)
Selva Pinargento
(10-20)
There are two paths you can take at this point, either Ghostlands or Silverpine Forest. However, any path missing out on Silverpine Forest isn't worth taking. In our opinion, it's the coolest Horde zone in all of this expansion! It fleshes out the character of
Dama Sylvanas Ventolesto
significantly and paints the Forsaken in a terrifying light. So ditch Ghostlands, you'll be happy you did; nothing will beat the innovative use of phasing and dynamic questlines that Silverpine has to offer.
Alture di Colletorto
(20-25)
Hillsbrad is also an incredibly well-done zone. It's also highly changed from its original roots. Intelligently, Hillsbrad counters the darkness revealed in Silverpine Forest's storylines with humor. The NPCs you'll meet will be memorable and hilarious; they serve as a tongue-in-cheek and loving message from Blizzard to fans. The introduction quest to the zone sets the entire tone. In
Benvenuti nell'ingranaggio
, you'll find the tables have turned as you take on the role of the quest giving NPC that doles out quests to adventurers. It just gets better from there, cumulating with an in-game version of PopCap's hit, Plants vs. Zombies. Defend your brains, err
grains,
long enough and leave the zone with your very own Sunflower vanity pet (
Semi di Girasole di Brazie
).
Suggested Route
Rovotorto Settentrionale
(25-30)
Capo di Rovotorto
(30-35)
Alternate Route
Altopiani d'Arathi
(25-30)
Entroterre
(30-35)
When you're done with Hillsbrad, you can take the zeppelin to Stranglethorn Vale near Undercity or head East from Hillsbrad Foothills to end up in Arathi and then the Hinterlands. Either way, both zones cover similar level ranges. Arathi Highlands and the Hinterlands are closer to Western Plaguelands which is where you'll be headed afterwards, but Stranglethorn offers a plethora of redone quests with a satisfying finish. If you're on the fence, just go to Stranglethorn; Arathi and the Hinterlands have been changed very little.
Eastern Kingdoms: Part Three (35-60)
Terre Infette Occidentali
(35-40)
After this, the paths converge. This is where you'll get to see a new, greener side of Western Plaguelands for the first time since the Lich King's fall. Make sure to head to the Bulwark on the border of Tirisfal Glades and Western Plaguelands to pick up the introduction quests to WPL from
Speziale Alienatus
and his camp. They're easy to miss, but these quests involve some of the best use of phasing yet in World of Warcraft. Be prepared to be asked to destroy farmsteads and help spread the blight. This zone is a wonderfully dark continuation of the Forsaken storyline that really took hold in Silverpine Forest and Hillsbrad.
Terre Infette Orientali
(40-45)
When starting out in Eastern Plaguelands, players will also be able to do a series of introductory quests with
Carovana di Fiona
. Make sure these initial quests for the caravan are done right away to unlock the quest
Amuleto fortunato di Fiona

, a new vanity larva pet. Higher level players often end up having to farm him, so getting this blessing now is a great way to kill two birds with one stone. You will be able to farm for the pet while you level and complete other quests in the zone.
Maleterre
(44-48)
Gorgia Rovente
(47-51)
Steppe Ardenti
(49-52)
Palude del Dolore
(51-55)
Terre Devastate
(55-60)
After this, you're conveniently brought to the Dark Portal where the first expansion will start.
Kalimdor: Alliance (Night Elves, Draenei)
Kalimdor: Part One (1-12)
Teldrassil
(1-12)
Isola Brumazzurra
(1-12)
Kalimdor: Part Two (10-30)
Isola Brumacremisi
(10-20)
Rivafosca
(10-20)
Valtetra
(20-25)
Vette di Petrartiglio
(25-30)
After completing either starting zone, you have the option to continue to the next zone. Draenei should check out Darkshore instead of their usual haunt, Bloodmyst Isle, if they can stand hoofing it. Darkshore has earned its name after the expansion as it is much darker and dreadful of a place after having received a tragic makeover. It starts out by searching for the survivors from Auberdine to set a somber mood with the quest
L'ultimo gruppo di superstiti
. It only gets sadder from that point onward.
Kalimdor: Part Three (30-60)
Suggested Route
Desolanda
(30-40)
Feralas
(35-40)
Alternate Route
Savane Meridionali
(30-35)
Acquemorte
(35-40)
When you hit 30, you will have a chance to branch out and take alternate paths. This starts with either Desolace or the Southern Barrens. If you take the Southern Barrens path, you'll most likely go to Dustwallow Marsh to finish out the thirties. Unfortunately, it's a zone which remains largely unchanged due to the revamp it already received earlier. If you choose to level in Desolace instead, you'll end up in Feralas which has received a noticeable makeover; islands have been sunk and Feathermoon Stronghold has grown.
In either case, it's best to just skip Dustwallow. You've probably seen it before.
Millepicchi
(40-45)
Both paths briefly reconvene at this point for Thousand Needles. If you've grouped in dungeons, used recruit-a-friend, or equipped heirloom gear you probably can skip this zone. You might even be able to without since leveling has gotten much easier. Missing Thousand Needles would be a mistake, though, because it's by far one of the best zones in this expansion. It's been flooded over, its valleys turned into a lake, and you will spend much of your time raiding on your own
Cappello della Barca
!
Yes, you get to quest on a boat! See why missing it could be a mistake now? Head there even if you're closer to 45 than 40 as it's worth seeing.
Suggested Route
Vilbosco
(45-50)
Fontefredda
(50-55)
Silitus
(55-60)
Alternate Route
Tanaris
(45-50)
Cratere di Un'Goro
(50-55)
Silitus
(55-60)
After Thousand Needles, pick your poison by heading South for Tanaris or North for Felwood. Felwood is our personal favorite; as the lore goes, it was corrupted by the Skull of Gul'dan. Building on that in Cataclysm, there's now an interesting quest arc involving Illidan (
Il Teschio di Gul'dan
) to explain how everything came to be through a series of scripted events. It also has a unique, bright green cat model for Hunters to tame (
Gatta di Winna
) and a cool trinket that shoots rainbows (
Rainbow Generator
).
Of course, if we haven't made a compelling enough case for Felwood, Tanaris is an adequate substitute--it's worth visiting to see the iconic Steamwheedle Port underwater with its Goblin survivors clinging to their washed out homes.
If you choose Tanaris, progress to Un'Goro Crater afterwards; in Un'Goro, you will be able to get
Giostra Portatile
which comes from
a great quest
(thanks to Cambo for the tip). If you choose Felwood, you should head to Winterspring to finish off the fifties. If for any reason after this experience you're not quite 58 yet, feel free to head to Silithus to finish up experience. However, at this point, the zone is currently unchanged by Cataclysm and fairly unremarkable. Luckily that might be changing in an upcoming patch.
Kalimdor: Horde (Tauren, Orcs, Trolls, Goblins)
Kalimdor: Part One (1-12)
Isole Perdute
(1-12)
Durotar
(1-12)
Mulgore
(1-12)
Kalimdor: Part Two (10-30)
Savane Settentrionali
(10-20)
Azshara
(10-20)
Valtetra
(20-25)
Vette di Petrartiglio
(25-30)
After finishing with the initial starting zones, you have the choice of either Northern Barrens or Azshara. However, if you're the type of player who likes vanity items, consider stopping by Azshara and doing your teen levels there instead of in the Barrens. The zone's best reward is
Cappello Magico Sbiadito
. This hat turns the wearer into various other in-game models such as a female Undead or a male Human. As an added bonus, it also opens up an endless stream of jokes about putting on your robes and wizard hat. The wizard hat's buff is persistent through combat and lasts thirty minutes, making it a great vanity item. You'll probably use this hat at 85 for laughs time to time and it's a good idea to pick it up while the XP is still good.
Beyond that, Azshara has been transformed from an empty zone to one teeming with quests; it's an interesting experience and a solid quest hub. It's the better choice by far.
