Once upon a time, there was a Wowhead user who had a hard time managing his schoolwork because of World of Warcraft. But, as he had been playing WoW for over three years, he was reluctant to cancel his subscription. After a week of contemplation, he finally found enough strength to cancel. He even e-mailed Malgayne to have his Wowhead account banned too, hoping it would help his attempt to quit WoW.
The account’s next billing payment had been due in a week, so he figured that it would be a good time to cancel the recurring subscription. After that week had passed it was official: his WoW account was no longer active and his Wowhead account was banned until his return. Unfortunately, this did not stop him from continuing to read both the official forums and Wowhead’s forums. The urge to resubscribe was growing bigger by the day, but this user was determined to quit anything WoW-affiliated altogether until he could get his life back under control.
Fast forward to sixteen days after his WoW account became frozen. He was home sick and had nothing to do, and he was starting to feel better that day. With just WoW on his mind, he succumbs and resubscribes to World of Warcraft. That’s right—it only took sixteen days for him to succumb. And all because he had been bored at home one day!
Now you might be thinking something like, “Who the heck is this person?”
For those of you who still haven't got it, that person would be
me
.
Now you might be thinking I’m an idiot—and looking back, I really should have handled it completely differently—but even though I was only WoW-free for sixteen days, the brief break actually
did
help me. My main goal was to be completely used to managing my schedule before I returned, and even though I failed, the break DID give me the motivation (and the wake-up call) I needed to finally straighten things out. So I guess you could say my mission was accomplished, eh? If and when I have to take another break from WoW, though, I'll have to be sure to make it stick!
I’m sure there are others out there who can say they’ve been through a similar situation, so let’s hear your stories!
Have you ever tried to take a break to manage school/life/work? How did that go?
Was it as much of a failure as mine was, or did it actually go well?
