Panthea
The Ny'alotha Raid will be releasing on January 21st with 12 new bosses. In this article, Panthea compares the 6 tanks to what is known about the 12 encounters in the raid, and analyzes how the Tank meta might shift in Ny'alotha. This article may help you if you're on the fence about what Tank to play.
Introduction
Tanking in
Ny’alotha, la cité en éveil
will be very similar to tanking in the
Palais Éternel
where the focus is more to do with the player rather than what spec they have chosen.
In
Palais Éternel
all tanks were able to be quite competitive with regards to fulfilling the purposes of their raid role for high end progression, this looks to be much more of the case going into
Ny’alotha, la cité en éveil
as the utility some specs provide really shine such as
Ruée rugissante
,
Bénédiction de liberté
,
Poigne de la mort
to name a few.

Important Tank Mechanics in Ny’alotha
Here is a breakdown of some of the Important Tank Mechanics in Ny'alotha to help give you an idea of what role tanks will be performing in Ny'alotha.
Wrathion
The most notable mechanic on this encounter as a Tank is his
Souffle incendiaire
which will deal a large amount of Magic damage and apply a stacking debuff to all players in front of him. Ensure that only the active tank is standing in front.
If any players are behind him, he will cast
Claque-queue
which will likely kill non-tank players. Ensure all of your tank swaps are smooth to avoid
Claque-queue
being cast on the raid.
On
Mythic
your movement will be limited as you will gain a stack of Slow from
Folie rampante
. If you ever reach 50 stacks you will take a very large amount of Magic damage. Your positioning as a tank is vital for this as any unnecessary movements will also mean unnecessary movements for your raid.
Maut
There are various ways of handling this encounter where you either have a dedicated add tank or you alternate between the boss and the adds.
If you are tanking the boss,
Blessures d’ombre
will deal increasing amounts of Shadow damage.
If you are tanking the adds, you need to ensure that they do not complete a cast of
Sombre offrande
which will give the boss 20% of their mana (which will make you enter Phase 2 prematurely). You will also need to ensure they are not within 20 yards of Maut as he will consume the add and all of their Mana (unless you are trying to enter Phase 2).
During Phase 2, you will need to soak the mana orbs that spawn from the edges of the room. Aim to soak them as fast as possible as they will deal damage to the raid based on how long they have been active for.
Prophet Skitra
Communication is very important on this boss as you may not be able to see some of the mechanics but other players can, and vice versa.
Throughout Phase 1 the boss will cast
Déchiquetage de psyché
on players which will then create an add. Tank the boss on top of this add after it has finished casting
Éruption psychique
to allow for DPS to be effective.
Every 20% health the boss looses he will create images of himself and give the raid one of two debuffs. This debuff will allow the players to see half of the images.
However
each tank will receive a different debuff so you will need to communicate as to which ones you can see.
Dark Inquisitor Xanesh
The boss will knock back the tank when she casts
Frappe abyssale
. Ensure you do not get knocked off the edge of the room and die.
Ensure there is plenty of space around the boss so that when she casts
Rituel du Vide
your raid members can stand within it. If one of these is inside of Azshara's barrier it's quite likely they won't be able to get it.
Ensure the boss is not positioned in the way of the
Orbe du Vide
as if any players are caught within the path of it, they will take damage from
Admonition
.
The Hivemind
There is no tank swap during this encounter, however your positioning is vital. Unlike other encounters with multiple bosses you will need to be mindful which buff is active and this will dictate if the bosses should be together (
Contrôle de conscience collective de Tek’ris
) or spread apart(
Contrôle de conscience collective de Ka’zir
) .
Try and have the boss that the raid is killing on top of adds for efficient cleave DPS.
If you are tanking Tek'ris, ensure he is faced away from the raid so they do not have to avoid
Annulation explosive
.
If you are tanking Ka'zir, ensure you call out when you need support with interrupting
Nova de distraction mentale
.
Shad'har the Insatiable
The tanks on this encounter should be decided in advance. If you will be taking
Écraser
then you should be tanking the boss as well. If you will be taking
Dissolution
then you will simply taunt for this debuff and survive the DoT.
During Phase 1 (Shadow) and 2 (Void) try and keep the boss in the middle to allow for the breaths to cover a small portion of the room and this will make it easier for your raid to dodge.
During Phase 3 you will want to tank the boss on the edge of the room and move the boss on each
Débordement bouillonnant
cast so that the raid is not standing in it.
Drest’agath
One tank always needs to be in range of the boss, else he will
Poigne du Vide
whoever is highest on threat and start to melee them which will likely kill them.
The tank swap on this encounter is simply done by the application of the
Graine volatile
. When this debuff expires it will apply
Corruption volatile
on all adds and players
including yourself
. Ensure you do not hit the players in your raid with this as they may die from upcoming damage.
Vexiona
As with all Dragons, her notable tank mechanic is
Souffle du Crépuscule
which will deal a large amount of Magic damage and apply stacks of
Corruption du Vide
to all players in front. Ensure that only the active tank is standing in front.
One tank will be tanking the boss, the other will be tanking all of the adds. The most notable add during this encounter is the Void Ascendant, as when it dies it will drop a
Don du Vide
. This will allow you to cast
Annihilation
and remove all of your
Corruption du Vide
stacks.
Ra-den
The most notable mechanic on this encounter are the Essences which spawn from portals with pre-set positions. Your raid leader will have a set order in which they should die so if that orb is getting a bit too close to Ra-den be prepared to kite!
If you are not actively tanking the boss be prepared to pick the add(s) from the portal
When Ra-den reaches 100 energy in Phase 1, he will cast
Frappe d’annulation
which reduces your max health.
In Phase 2 ,he will cast
Frappe putréfiée
which will leave a DoT based on your remaining health after the hit. You will want to try and get intentionally low on health for this.
Il’gynoth
The tank mechanic on this encounter is
Œil de N’Zoth
which will deal a large amount of Magic damage and apply a stacking debuff to all players in front. Ensure only the active tank is standing in front. Be prepared to utilise defensive cooldowns for this.
During the intermission the Organs will need to be interrupted. It is likely the tanks will be assigned to their own one to keep interrupted. Ensure an interrupt rotation has been set up for this.
Carapace of N’Zoth
Positioning of the boss during this encounter is vital to ensure the raid is able to avoid the Tentacles slamming to the ground from the edges of the room (the locations of these can be determined by the shadows on the ground), and to optimize DPS.
Communicate with your co-tank when you are doing Sanity resets so that the boss doesn't try to follow the tank who is resetting.
The tankable adds on this encounter have very clear spawn animations. Be prepared to pick them up when they spawn.
N’Zoth
During this encounter you will be solo tanking different phases, so you will need to be comfortable with what is happening in each phase.
In Phase 1 (and the Mindscape in Phase 2) you will need to tank Psychus near the tentacles that are being killed as they will apply the
Choc synaptique
debuff to him. Making him die faster.
In Phase 2 (Physical Realm) you will need to ensure you get to the Basher tentacles as soon as they spawn so that the raid does not take damage from
Jaillissement tumultueux
.
In Phase 3 you will need to position the Thought Harvester in a way that the damage done to it will cleave onto N'Zoth.
Tier List of Tanks
My personal rating of all tanks, with knowledge of how each tank functions, their utility for each encounter aggregated and general ease of play is as follows:
S Tier:
Brewmaster Monk
A Tier:
Protection Paladin / Vengeance Demon Hunter / Guardian Druid
B Tier:
Blood Death Knight / Protection Warrior
Tank Tiers explained
Brewmaster Monk
Whilst Brewmaster Monk has had some nerfs in the form of
Don du buffle
fixes and
Report
nerf it’s still a very competitive tank for the reasons that it has
Report
, which helps to smooth damage and be easier to heal (it also allows for recovery from mistakes which can happen on progress where you would have otherwise died on other classes), increasing amounts of dodge from mastery, and brings
Toucher mystique
.
Some examples of utility Brewmaster Monk brings for fights are:
Wrathion
-
Soif du tigre
allows the stacking Slow debuff from
Folie rampante
to be reset (Mythic Mechanic).
Prophet Skitra
-
Anneau de paix
can be useful to control the Image of Absolution (Heroic Mechanic).
The Hivemind
-
Anneau de paix
is useful to keep the adds grouped together for AoE and to stop the Darters from escaping.
Shad'har the Insatiable
-
Soif du tigre
allows you to remove the root from the Living Miasma (Mythic Mechanic).
Drest'agath
- Your high mobility will allow you to place Volatile Seed on Tentacles far away.
Carapace of N'Zoth
-
Invocation d’une statue du Buffle noir
is very useful to group the adds together in Phase 1 and 3.
N'Zoth
- Your high physical damage reduction will make tanking the
Moissonneur de pensées
easier in Phase 3.
Protection Paladin
Always a strong pick. Never the best. That’s how Protection Paladin is and will continue to be, their utility toolkit has value on every encounter and in the hands of a skilled player is a very sturdy tank.
Some examples of utility Protection Paladin brings for fights are:
Wrathion
-
Bénédiction de liberté
allows the stacking Slow debuff from
Folie rampante
to be reset (Mythic Mechanic).
Maut
-
Bénédiction de protection des sorts
+
Bénédiction de sacrifice
can be used on high burst DPS players to allow them to nuke the boss in Phase 2.
Dark Inquisitor Xanesh
-
Bouclier du vengeur
is very useful for keeping the
Terreur éveillée
adds interrupted (Mythic Mechanic).
Shad'har the Insatiable
-
Bénédiction de liberté
allows you to remove the root from the Living Miasma (Mythic Mechanic).
Vexiona
-
Bénédiction de protection des sorts

Corruption du Vide
from the
Souffle du Crépuscule
.
Ra-den
-
Bénédiction de protection des sorts
can be used to negate gaining stacks of the tank debuffs.
Il'gynoth
-
Bouclier du vengeur
is very useful for keeping an
Organe de corruption
interrupted throughout Phase 2 without any external support allow for the other tank to support another
Organe de corruption
group.
Vengeance Demon Hunter
The buffs to Vengeance in 8.2 pushed them to be very competitive, however the spec hasn’t seen enough of a spotlight. Their passive mitigation from
Protections démoniaques
contends with
Report
as a strong point of the class, and
Marque enflammée
lines up with a majority of tank debuffs in this raid.
Some examples of utility Vengeance Demon Hunter brings for fights are:
Prophet Skitra
-
Sigil de chaînes
can be useful to control the Image of Absolution (Heroic Mechanic).
The Hivemind
-
Sigil de chaînes
is useful to keep the adds grouped together for AoE and to stop the Darters from escaping.
Drest'agath
- Your high mobility will allow you to place Volatile Seed on Tentacles far away.
Il'gynoth
-
Sigil de chaînes
is useful to keep the
Sang de Ny'alotha
grouped together for efficient AoE DPS.
Carapace of N'Zoth
-
Sigil de chaînes
is very useful to group the adds together in Phase 1 and 3.
Guardian Druid
A vast majority of the encounters incorporate large periods of movement, this is where
Ruée rugissante
really shines. Whilst it is replaceable with a
Totem de bouffée de vent
their defensive toolkit is nothing to be laughed at, with a large health pool and ever increasing amounts of Dodge, increased levels of Mastery increasing their healing received, and their ability to get
Vide résonnant
from their raid weapon makes them a strong contender.
Some examples of utility Guardian Druid brings for fights are:
Wrathion
-
Ruée rugissante
can be very helpful to allow your raid to move for
Cataclysme ardent
.
Maut
- You can remove the
Malédiction ancestrale
with
Délivrance de la corruption
(Mythic Mechanic).
Prophet Skitra
-
Enchevêtrement de masse
can be useful to control the Image of Absolution (Heroic Mechanic).
Dark Inquisitor Xanesh
-
Ruée rugissante
can be very helpful to allow your raid to move from the last hit of
Tourment
.
The Hivemind
-
Vortex d’Ursol
is useful to keep the adds grouped together for AoE and to stop the Darters from escaping.
Vexiona
-
Ruée rugissante
can be very helpful to allow your raid to move from
Décimateur du Crépuscule
(Dragon breath that covers 1/3 of the room in fire in Phase 2).
Carapace of N'Zoth
-
Vortex d’Ursol
is very useful to group the adds together in Phase 1 and 3.
N'Zoth
- Your high physical damage reduction will make tanking the
Moissonneur de pensées
easier in Phase 3.
Blood Death Knight
There has been a lot of hype around Blood Death Knight for the upcoming raid, so it might be quite strange to see them so low down on the list. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as for the fights that you want a Blood Death Knight, they do their job exceptionally well!
There are quite a few debuffs you can negate with
Carapace anti-magie
in the raid which can help with recovering from mistakes from a mistimed taunt swap. Both
Carapace anti-magie
and
Sang vampirique
line up with a majority of tank debuffs in the raid.
However, when you take the whole raid into consideration the utility they provide isn’t transferable in a lot of scenarios due to notable mobs in these encounters either being rooted in place or immune to
Poigne de la mort
.
Some examples of utility Blood Death Knight brings for fights are:
Wrathion
-
Carapace anti-magie
can be used to negate gaining stacks of
Armure incendiaire
from the
Souffle incendiaire
.
Prophet Skitra
-
Emprise de Fielsang
can be useful to control the Image of Absolution (Heroic Mechanic).
The Hivemind
-
Emprise de Fielsang
is useful to keep the Aqir Drones grouped together for AoE and
Poigne de la mort
can be used to bring the Aqir Darters to the boss for efficient DPS.
Vexiona
-
Carapace anti-magie
can be used to negate gaining stacks of
Corruption du Vide
from the
Souffle du Crépuscule
.
Ra-den
-
Carapace anti-magie
can be used to negate gaining stacks of the tank debuffs.
Carapace of N'Zoth
-
Emprise de Fielsang
is very useful to group the adds together in Phase 1 and 3.
Protection Warrior
The main draw of a Protection Warrior in a raiding environment is their ability to smooth their damage intake via
Maîtrise du blocage
and
Renvoi de sort
, however not many of the notable mechanics in this raid can be blocked or reflected.
They will still be a strong pick due to additional scaling of
Vision de perfection
increasing
Avatar
uptime, higher amounts of Mastery from increased item level on Azerite from
Bastion de puissance
,
Renvoi de sort
still providing of Magic mitigation on a short cooldown, and most notably
Cri de ralliement
.
Some examples of utility Protection Warrior brings for fights are:
Maut
-
Cri de ralliement
is very useful for the high amounts of damage the raid will be taking.
Shad'har the Insasiable
-
Maîtrise du blocage
is very strong to mitigate the damage taken from
Écraser
.
Drest'agath
-
Cri de ralliement
will be helpful to use during
Impact entropique
if multiple Tentacles are up.
Vexiona
-
Cri de ralliement
is very useful for the high amounts of damage the raid will be taking in Phase 3.
Ra-den
-
Cri de ralliement
is very useful for the high amounts of damage the raid will be taking in Phase 2.
N'Zoth
- Your high physical damage reduction will make tanking the
Moissonneur de pensées
easier in Phase 3.
Closing Thoughts
You can play any tank as long as you play it well.
The meta for tanking is primarily defined by what will allow you to make the fewest mistakes from your ability to play it and your ability to survive. If you re-roll to another tank and cannot play it well, this may require an additional healer to your raid setup and ultimately this leads to less raid efficiency.
With all of the above in mind, all tank specs bring something of value to the progression environment to the raid, and as long as they are played well no tank spec will be a burden to your raid team.
