Throughout Battle for Azeroth, Protection Warriors were the dominant Tank in Mythic+ for the entire expansion. However, with all the changes in Shadowlands to systems and classes, we've seen a new dominant Tank -- the Vengeance Demon Hunter!
Vengeance Demon Hunter Mythic+ Guide
If you've looked at the
Mythic+ leaderboard on Raider.io for Shadowlands Season 1
, you'll have noticed the rise of the Vengeance Demon Hunter with the majority of groups running the Tank at the top of the leaderboard. This is a change from the highest keys in
Season 4 of BFA
, where Protection Warrior dominated the meta.
Here are some of the reasons that Vengeance Demon Hunter is so strong at the moment!
General Tankiness
Vengeance Demon Hunters are probably one of the Tanks with the best survivability in Mythic+ due to their overwhelming number of cooldowns and generally large HP pool. They have the highest base health pool from
Peau dure
and get a passive 15% damage reduction from
Protections démoniaques
, as well as many different ways to proc their mitigation abilities. This allows Vengeance Demon Hunters to face-tank mobs more than the other tanks, especially with some of the changes in Shadowlands, as well as survive very high magic burst damage.
Base Mitigation
Vengeance has the following mitigation buttons:
Pointes démoniaques
for Increased Armor and 15% Parry Chance - 2 charges, 20 sec (reduced by Haste) recharge.
Métamorphose
for 50% Health, 200% Armor and increased resource generation - 3 minute cooldown.
Marque enflammée
for 40% damage reduction from the target.
Vengeance also has some big passives:
Protections démoniaques
- a flat 15% damage reduction to all forms of damage.
Peau dure
- 65% Stamina and 100% Armor.
Additional Bonuses in Shadowlands
However, there are many talents and Legendaries in Shadowlands that have helped Vengeance stand out by increasing the uptime of their defensive toolkit, significantly reducing their damage taken.
Démoniaque
- which allows for more
Métamorphose
uptime, once a minute.
The combination of
Brûlé vif
,
Flammes déchirantes
and
Chair calcinée
gives a 40% damage reduction with a rather high uptime to all creatures in the pack.
Chair calcinée
makes
Aura d’immolation
increase the duration of
Marque enflammée
.
Flammes déchirantes
increases the uptime on
Aura d’immolation
.
Brûlé vif
makes
Marque enflammée
spread to all nearby targets!
The
Âme flamboyante
Legendary Power greatly reduces the cooldown of
Marque enflammée
, especially with the
Défenseur gangrené
Conduit
All these things combined allow for Vengeance Demon Hunters to have a high uptime on some mitigation and for the moments when they don't, they easily have the mobility to kite the pack.
Damage Output - Kyrian Covenant
While Vengeance Demon Hunters don't have the best single target damage, according to
Warcraft Logs
on Shriekwing and Hungering Destroyer, their AoE damage stands out, especially with the most popular Covenant choice, Kyrian. The
Décret élyséen
deals a massive amount of damage to every target in a pull, and combined with the double Potency conduits,
Répétition de décret
and
Brasier grandissant
leads to high AoE damage.
Vengeance DH ConduitsVengance DH Kyrian Guide
Some other tanks like Guardian Druid and Brewmaster Monk have looked to be on par with Vengeance DH defensively, but Vengeance's offensive capabilities stand out especially when needing to kite. Protection Paladin's tend to have a very high damage profile, but are rather frail.
Conclusion
In Conclusion, Vengeance DH's are one of the tanks that have to kite the least in Mythic+ at the moment due to the large amounts of Damage Reduction abilities that they can use, While in
Métamorphose
, geared Vengeance DHs already have over 100k health and a massive amount of armor when it's needed the most and in between these moments, they can
Pointes démoniaques
and spread
Marque enflammée
across all the mobs. If that wasn't all, they have a Cheat Death effect on their talent row from
Dernier recours
which is probably the strongest Cheat Death in the game, as it doesn't have a "massive overkill" exception and provides another 15 seconds of
Métamorphose
. Also, while it's nothing new, the utility from a Vengeance Demon Hunter is very good, as the only Tank that brings a blanket silence, and one of two tanks that has an AoE grip,
Marque du chaos
for 5% magic damage and
Emprisonnement
-- one of the few Crowd Controls that don't cause the player to be in combat with the mob.
In Shadowlands, some players have felt like Tanks are more "kiters" than Tanks and while you still have to kite as a Vengeance Demon Hunter, Veng DH is definitely a stand out tank for being able to sit in the pack, while other tanks feel forced to pop everything on pull and just kite afterwards.
