With the reveal of the Dragonflight Paladin talent trees, our Holy Paladin writer Voulk provides initial reactions and thoughts on this revamped system. We break down the Holy Paladin talent trees, discussing the new talents and providing some sample builds. Join us as we predict how this class could play in Dragonflight!
To learn about the best PvE talent builds in Dragonflight for this class, and export these builds into the game, please check out our Holy, Protection, and Retribution Paladin class guides:

Holy Paladin had to wait a little longer to get their spec tree and it’s debatable if it was worth the wait. There’s some really interesting stuff in both trees but they’re somewhat hampered by awkward pathing and the resulting lack of points to spend.
Paladin Spec Talent Tree
Paladin Dragonflight Talents - What's New?
The spec tree is a mix of
Éclair lumineux
/
Lumière sacrée
based casting nodes and the more
Horion sacré
/
Lumière de l’aube
type gameplay that we’ve become accustomed to in recent expansions. It has a few problems right now that we'll address further down the page.
Fureur déchaînée de Liadrin
- This is an interesting, powerful talent. Rank 2 isn’t functional on Alpha right now so we’re not 100% sure what the numbers on it will be, but free Holy Power during wings is incredibly strong – particularly with
Éveil
which is going to turn the free Holy Power into more wings uptime which of course means more Holy Power. Phew.
Barrière de foi
- Effectively a near 20% multiplier on our hard casts. Fairly good for a casting build on any fight with long debuffs or heavy tank damage. You won’t take this in a melee playstyle and the game doesn't try to tempt you by including
Horion sacré
either.
Protection de Tyr
- Interesting in theory but there are stronger points to be grabbed if they rework our pathing a little bit. Ultimately 10% extra healing just isn’t that big, even if you have Disc / Druid cooldowns running.
Paladin Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
I’m not opposed to a Paladin spec tree that features both hard casts and a melee-heavy playstyle but I don’t think the current tree is the best representation of that yet. The current tree kind of spreads the Holy Light / Flash of Light talents through the tree in a way that forces you into some of them even if you don’t want them and means that players who
want
to cast have a hard time actually making a coherent build. There’s also no real attempt to allow you to dip into both playstyles at once which should be a design goal.
Pathing Issues
This is maybe the most restrictive healer tree in terms of pathing. Taking individual talents often involves not just one but several pre-requisites, often without alternative paths and they often have little to do with the node you actually want. Take this example below where
Guide de foi
requires you take
Sauvé par la Lumière
(mid-poor), Shining Savior (middling),
Bénédictions résonnantes
(poor).
Having to take some lower quality stuff to get what you want is fine in a talent system but it works best when you have a bit of choice. Here the path to a key node is overly restrictive. The tree has several of these and the end result is that almost every build you try to make ends up feeling short a number of points.
Guide de foi
/ Virtue are particularly rough examples because Beacons are a key Holy Paladin system but they’re given a path on the outside of the tree here instead of being more centralized.
Chunky Nodes
The “lack of points” feeling is further exacerbated by some nodes that are overly points heavy for the benefit they give. A lot of the other spec trees have been thinned out and there’s a fair chance Holy Paladin goes the same way.
Some chief offenders are:
Révélations divines
: At current tuning this is barely worth taking if it were a 1 pointer that gives the same benefit as the current 3 points. It's also in a key central position which makes it's low power a bit worse.
Fureur déchaînée de Liadrin
/
Éveil
: These are both
extremely
strong talents, but they’re also capstones. They could offer their benefit for a single point each.
Puissance du croisé
: Splitting the difference and going with a 1.5s reduction for one point might be a better place for the talent.
If you could afford a few extra points, then you could maybe splash into a few of the casting talents. Right now you’ll only take the ones you’re forced into and end up with a playstyle very similar to Shadowlands. Not necessarily a bad thing but the spec could be more. If you’re more interested in a cast-heavy Paladin build then the tree feels even more restrictive and you end up missing a lot of the talents you need for the build to really function.
The Spender Issue
In Shadowlands, we ran into a common problem where our holy power spenders weren’t really much of a choice. You’d always use
Lumière de l’aube
in raid, and always use
Mot de gloire
in Mythic+. The Necrolord covenant and Sepulcher tier set added some slight variation but didn’t really change the core decision making. We’re in a similar space in Dragonflight. Unending Light and Afterimage are the only talents that try to mix it up but they're underwhelming. It’s also a similar concept to the tier set in that you’re really just casting
Mot de gloire
when you have X stacks, or when Y is off cooldown rather than making moment to moment decisions.
Seconde aurore
also pushes
Lumière de l’aube
even further. I made a lot of suggestions in this area in my Wishlist but any mechanic or talent that makes it more than a raw single target vs AoE choice could do a lot.
Dead Nodes
There are some nodes that are just extremely low value in any build and possibly too much so to even be tuned up.
Bonté de l’Empyrée
,
Accès de compassion
,
Bénédictions résonnantes
,
Révélations divines
, and even
Munificence de Tyr
are all weak to the point where the power gain upon taking them is near 0 or even 0 in some cases. These might be better candidates for reworks or even replacement.
Hard Casts Not Given Adequate Support
A Paladin that hard casts frequently hasn’t really been viable for the past few expansions. There’s an attempt to bring it back in some capacity in Dragonflight and there are some interesting talents like
Délivrance de Tyr
,
Puissance de Main-d’Argent
and
Barrière de foi
that support the playstyle quite well. With the tree as it stands, you can’t afford enough of the points you want to make the build work without sacrificing key pieces. They also haven’t really addressed the difficulty of hard casts in melee and have only made the mastery issue worse for the build with the removal of
Règne de la loi
s mastery component. Supporting the build through talents is a good idea, but the base casts themselves and the
Imprégnation de lumière
aspect in particular are in need of larger overhaul if they want it to be competitive.
The spec tree also invests a lot of points in
Lumière sacrée
and
Éclair lumineux
without really making them appealing for a melee playstyle. This could lead to a lot of dead points. Even minor changes like allowing
Imprégnation de lumière
casts to be instant and
Barrière de foi
also accumulating healing from
Horion sacré
could do a lot to make the two builds feel like different aspects of one instead of being so divided. The cast heavy playstyle also has way too big a focus on casting on Beacons which restricts choice – particularly given the build doesn’t have the points to pick up
Guide de foi
or
Guide de vertu
.
Holy Paladin Spec Tree
Holy Paladin Talents for Raiding - What's New?
The Paladin class tree is a mix of effects from previous expansions like Azerite traits, old talents and legendaries. There’s also a new effect or two in the tree and many of the old ones have been remixed a little bit.
Sceau de l’Ordre
-
Sceau de l’Ordre
is an evolution of
Aube et crépuscule
below it. I actually don’t like this talent pair at all, regardless of how strong or weak they might be. Having to cycle your Holy Power through 5 and 0 every 12 seconds ends up feeling like a chore rather than being an interesting part of our playstyle.
Réprimandes
- This is one of the stronger healer interrupts on a short 15 second cooldown. This should be a key Mythic+ tool and it’s in a fairly accessible section of the tree. More of an optional pick in raid but you can grab it if a fight would benefit.
Aspiration divine
- This is an interesting one but is expensive at 3 points. I really like this since it synergizes well with
Assaut radieux
and offers reward for timing
Frappe du croisé
well (you’ll want to capture as many spenders as possible in your window). It will probably earn it’s three-point budget but I’d still prefer they knock it down to a two. The tree is already very heavy, particularly at the bottom end.
Sceau de charité
- Across the row from
Aspiration divine
is
Sceau de charité
. This one is more of a work in progress. It’s an extremely similar concept to
Dessein divin
but only a fraction of the power and budgeted at three points instead of one. The power level can easily be fixed but given
Dessein divin
exists elsewhere in the tree, this one could be a decent prospect to be pruned entirely.
Toucher de lumière
- A generic damage or healing proc. This isn’t implemented in Alpha yet so we can’t comment much on its strength but the design is fine for a filler node.
Remixed
Parangon fou
- This is a little weaker than the Shadowlands version but is still a potent pick. It’s half the wings gain but is also applied by Judgment so you can expect about the same wings extension.
Voie dorée
- In Shadowlands
Voie dorée
was an endurance conduit that gave us a small self-heal while we were standing in
Consécration
. This node expands on that idea by also healing five allies in addition to yourself. It’s still an absolute trickle of healing, but minor maintenance healing attached to key DPS spells is generally not bad to have access to. It’ll slightly extend the amount of time you can spend DPSing.
Holy Paladin Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
The class tree could use similar improvements to the spec tree – nodes just cost way too many points and are often DPS focused in a way that doesn’t benefit Holy much or at all.
Sceau de charité
,
Sceau de puissance
,
Sceau du croisé
and arguably
Aspiration divine
are all three point nodes that could easily be cut to two. In some cases you don’t want to take a single point in them let alone more than that. We were hoping for a single target spender to make it’s way into the tree and it hasn’t. Something like Templar’s Verdict would do very good things for the spec – emphasizing choice between damage and healing instead of most offensive power just being a passive result of our maximum healing rotation.
The tree does also have some highlights:
Bénédiction de protection des sorts
is incredible utility to have access to.
Other key utilities like
Aura de dévotion
, Blessings of Protection and Freedom are all intact.
Some of the new stuff like
Aspiration divine
and
Récompense
are quite interesting.

Possible Trades
Bénédiction des saisons
->
Résonance divine
. More personal throughput in exchange for one of your raid buffs.
Aube et crépuscule
& associated nodes ->
Parangon fou
& associated nodes. Less healing but less specific Holy Power management.
Esprit inflexible
->
Bénédiction de protection des sorts
. You'll make this trade on any fight where Spellwarding is even a little bit valuable.
The build does miss a lot, but that is kind of the nature of the tree right now. Trying to grab something valuable like
Guide de foi
comes at
significant
cost. You'd also love to have something like
Parangon fou
but it's hidden behind so many talents that do nothing for Holy Paladin that you can't really afford it.
Holy Paladin Dragonflight Talents for Raiding - How Strong Is It?
This
isn’t
a weak tree, owing to the very high strength of
Fureur déchaînée de Liadrin
and its synergy with
Éveil
. We’re able to play hard into
our spenders
Lumière de l’aube
, we’ll generate a lot of Holy Power and we’ll turn it into wings uptime which will give us even more Holy Power. It’s tough to compare us to other healer specs this early but there’s a fairly high chance you’d want to run at least one of this Paladin in your raid. The overall package is still pretty strong here – you likely won’t top healing but you’ll be competitive in addition to bringing some damage, a light DR cooldown, and decent overall utility.
That doesn’t mean the spec works though. It’s still fundamentally a design that doesn’t work yet and I’d rather we not go into another expansion with half of our spellbook missing from our bars. There are a few bright spots in the new Paladin talent trees but they’re hampered by what are some very fixable issues like pathing and dead talents. Given this is quite an early iteration of the tree, we’ll be pushing hard for changes.
