Frost Giant Studios
is a small new game company made up of eight former Blizzard developers focused on revitalizing the real-time strategy genre. As
reported by Venturebeat
, the company has raised $4.7 million to create a new game, insisting that the RTS format is not dead and can still be a vibrant part of gaming. Created earlier this year, Frost Giant Studios is also based in Irvine, California, already a hotbed of game development expertise including Blizzard Entertainment, Obsidian Entertainment, Ready At Dawn Studios, Amazon Game Studios, and
Mike Morhaime's new Dreamhaven
, as well as many more developers in the greater Orange County and southern California area.
With the company headed by former Blizzard alumni largely focused on Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3, they bring a wealth of experience in game development and RTS in particular, citing their departure from Blizzard in order to focus solely on real-time strategy, while Blizzard has their interests spread across all their other franchises. That said, it is interesting timing, considering Blizzard announced just last week that it would
end development updates for Star Craft 2
after more than ten years since its initial release, with no currently known plans for another entry into the RTS genre.
Also of interest is their key investors, one of which being Riot Games (League of Legends) - while it's somewhat unusual for one game studio to directly invest in another, it's not entirely unheard of, and it isn't the first time the juggernaut has partnered with up and coming studios;
Riot Forge
was specifically created in order to
partner with smaller studios to create more League of Legends content
, having revealed its first
League of Legends Story
this past December. Riot has also purportedly introduced its senior game designers to the Frost Giant team, and while how much involvement the studio has remains to be seen, it's possible this new game could end up falling under the umbrella of the massive
League of Legends
IP. Frost Giant's others key investors are the more typical venture capital investment firms, with the
GC VR Gaming Tracker Fund
being noteworthy in that it focuses on
virtual reality, augmented reality, games, and esports
- an obvious interest for any new RTS game.
The common sentiment appears to be that if anyone can revitalize the RTS genre, the wealth of experience in this team has the best shot at doing it. CEO Tim Morten was production lead for
Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void
and previously worked as Director of Product Development on
Command & Conquer
, while Tim Campbell was lead campaign designer on
Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne
and most recently game director for the very successful
Wasteland 3
. Frost Giant Studios is currently focused on PC, with plans to advance the RTS genre with machine learning and AI, lowering the barrier to entry, enhancing campaign, co-op, and competitive gameplay, as well as empowering user-generated content. Grand ambitions aside however, the company is so far determined to stay small, and the game is in the very earliest stages of development, which means we likely won't see anything out of it for at least a couple of years.
If you're interested in keeping up with Frost Giant Studios, a
new subreddit
has just been formed, and a few of the developers will be interviewed on
The Pylon Show
, tomorrow at 5:45 PM PDT.
