Citizens of Dalaran, raise your eyes and observe as Archmage Drenden returns to Dalaran to rejoin its ruling Council of Six! Appearing at the start of
La messagère
questline of Patch 10.2.7, players not familiar with the books may wonder who this mysterious mage is, and just why they've been so readily welcomed into Dalaran's leading council.
Archmage Karlain says: It's been too long, Drenden! Glad to see you back in Dalaran.
Archmage Drenden says: It has. I'm grateful the council accepted me back so readily.
Archmage Karlain says: Of course. We're always in need of a mage of your talent.
Archmage Drenden says: And I mean to put those talents to good use, you can be sure of that.
A former member of the Council of Six during the Third War, Archmage Drenden was a recurring character in several World of Warcraft novels, investigating the enigmatic Lord Prestor in
Day of the Dragon
and confronting the burgeoning necromancer Kel'Thuzad in
Road to Damnation
. As described in
Tides of War
, his tenure as council member came to a sudden end with the undead siege of Dalaran and its subsequent destruction at the hands of Archimonde, leaving Drenden missing and presumed dead.
All of these events took place prior to World of Warcraft, however, and so this is the first time we've actually seen the Archmage in game. Although his return is well timed to fill
Kalecgos' now vacant council seat
, his reappearance after so many years of absence is quite the surprise, suggesting there may be more story to tell in The War Within.
