WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Welcome to the 75th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up! In this edition we're looking at Game updates and patch 8.1.5 PTR changes, the perspective of a buyer plus TradeSkillMaster 4.7!
If you're new to this series or want to re-visit past posts, you can
check out the previous articles right here on cuckhead.com
My name is
Gumdrops
and I’m the lead moderator for the
/r/woweconomy subreddit
and the accompanying
Discord server
. I am also the Support/Community Manager & User Evangelist for
TradeSkillMaster
, the Auction House addon suite for World of Warcraft. I stream on Twitch for
Method
and my focus is on mentoring and tutoring the WoW community in all things gold-making. I hope to cover and showcase some of the interesting topics, discussions, content and guides that have been going on over the last week in the gold making community. Some that you might have missed as a veteran gold maker, or you might be interested in checking out for the first time as a new or aspiring ‘goblin’.
The format will not be that of a traditional guide, but links to further reading with commentary and opinions of my own. I will be looking at the bigger picture, the decision making and thought processes in being a gold maker – rather than a step by step instructional list. As the saying goes, “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.
Game Updates & 8.1.5 PTR
Love is in the Air
It's February, and what better way to pass the time before patch 8.1.5 is released than to try for the
Spezzacuori X-45
mount! The Love is in the Air event is active through February 26th and it's probably one of the better holidays in-game for all forms of goblins to make a bit of profit.
If you haven't checked it out yet, you can farm
Portafortuna Amoroso
to turn in to
Braccialetti Portafortuna Amorosi
, the bracelets can be traded with other players and they're used to buy the vendor currency
Emblema d'Amore
in order to buy the holiday event items. One such item is the
Struzzo Rosa Rapido
which costs 270 of the tokens (or 2,700 Lovely Charms), which can then also be bought and sold on the Auction House.
When looking at farms, it's normally noted how many 'charms per hour' you can expect, rather than gold per hour. This gives a better indication on what you can earn for your time spent based on your server or market. Most people have been advising to head to Normal mode Eye of Azshara in legion, or even the non-instanced zone with the new level cap allowing easy clearing of the trash, as well as Island Expeditions in BfA to have a chance at all of the other rewards there too.
Trigger Them
has a video showcasing how to farm the open world zone in Legion with tips on maximising your Love Tokens.
As always, these holiday event items will tank in price during the event. If you're not going to be farming them yourself it might be worthwhile investing in some of the mounts from the Auction House and selling them off season when the prices recover a bit. You can see a clear trend since the end of the last Love is in the Air event for the Lovebirds on The Undermine Journal:
Over the opening days of the even we'll see prices tumble and slowly recover over the year as availability decreases. Don't feel like you have to sell something immediately, and certainly don't tie up all of your gold in this kind of item if you can't afford to wait for a few months to maximise your profits.

Benefits of the Jewelcrafting
Focus di Martelgemma
include creating a bag of gems from shrines in the open world, you don't get too many and there's no information on how often you can do this or how many shrines there are. You can also remove a socketed gem using the tool. The buffs from the Leatherworking shrines are basically the same as some of the temporary buffs from Timeless Isle in Pandaria, just lasting a bit longer.
Forza Primordiale: Resistenza della Tartaruga
Forza Primordiale: Furia della Bestia
Forza Primordiale: Rapidità del Felino
The inscription blood contracts provide a temporary, albeit 4 hour long, battle companion. Chances are this is not going to be the economy-breaking, unique and niche gold-making market nobody was really expecting anyway.
/u/cmentis on reddit took a look at the Tailoring item on the PTR and shared some findings
:
For my part, I did Tailoring. It gives you access to an item that lets you interact with Rifts of Time (this one was on a rock near one of the outposts in Tirigarde Sound just outside Boralus) like such.
Kinda like Golems, Rifts of Times are in specific locations in the open world. Once you find one, use the item, and a Chronal Anomaly pops out which you kill to loot some cloth, and you get old world cloth (in this case I got some Shaldorei Silk) with Tidespray Linen. I didn't notice any 'farming bonus' where if you kill enough mobs you get some old world cloth, though the % can be really low. I'm guessing it comes in a small little bag that contains old world cloth if that is the case and the farming bonus does exist.
Distinctly worse than the Jewelcrafting item bonus, and basically a complete waste of time.
Discussion Point
How many alts are you farming the Love Rocket on? Will you be stocking up on Love Birds?
Buyer's Perspective
A really fascinating thread was shared on the US General WoW Forums which drew some contributions from the general playerbase about how they interact with the Auction House, specifically what they do or think when they see auctions being undercut for one copper or notice someone is likely a 'goblin'.
You can see the full thread here
, but I wanted to share some highlights and commentary from others on the topic.
The original question came as follows
:
If someone lists an item for 500g, and another person lists the same item for 499g 99s 99c, which to you buy, and why?
If it’s the latter, 1 copper is not going to make a difference in accumulating wealth/trying not to run out of money. You would have to buy 10,000 items of 1 copper less than the “higher” one to even save 1 gold.
Right off the bat,
someone confirming the 'neat stacking' strategy is a great way to entice players to purchase your items at various price points
:
Now I will say this, if I am looking for a stack of items say midnight salmon for example and someone has a hundred being sold individually at 25 gold vs someone selling a stack of 100 for 3000g I will pay 3000g every time because I am too lazy to click buyout 100 times.
Then there are some really bizarre-o mindsets posted, including
someone that likely instigates the 'race to zero' on your local Auction House
:
I often will buy the 10th in the list if the difference is small as I don’t want to support the undercutting. As a seller, when I’m facing this, I’ll usually lower the price by 25% and keep doing it until the undercutting stops. I believe that is exactly how the market is supposed to work - to drive to the actual value.
You might want to avoid naming your character with a financial or bank orientated label according to this player.
Although I'm not sure they'll have enough gold eventually
.
I never buy from the listing that undercuts by a copper, never. Another one is I won’t buy from an idiotic named toon either… don’t care the difference in gold price at all, I have enough…
Even Community Manager Bornakk does the same
!
I have no problem with blatant undercutting, but 1 copper is just lazy. I’ll buy the higher one in that case.
In this hypothetical situations I’d do the same. That said if there are enough of them listed I don’t want to scroll through pages and will just get whatever I need as quickly as possible.
In any case, a lot of commenters simply confirmed that the Auction House UI needed a complete overhaul. It's quite prohibitive for anyone that doesn't use an Auction House addon, even just to purchase your every-day consumables. It's still at a point where Game Director Ion Hazzikostas recommends using an addon to interact with the Auction House until something is done, and there are still no hints as to what's to come or what the overhaul will entail.
I'm personally hopeful for an increase in items per page, bigger stack sizes for materials, better distinctions between items with variations and in-game pricing data including sale information.

TradeSkillMaster 4.7
TradeSkillMaster version 4.7 was released which fixed tons of minor issues/problems including:
Various Mailing UI state (such as excess gold options) is now saved persistently
Added the ability to collapse or expand all groups via the “more” menu for various group trees
Expanded / collapsed state of import / export group trees is now persistent
Greatly improved the usability of various multiline input boxes and added them to more places (such as custom price settings in operations)
Fixed an issue where sending mails would sometimes get stuck on sending.
Fixed an issue where destroying would get stuck occasionally.
You can see the full changelog of version
4.7
,
4.7.1
and
4.7.2
on the TSM blog, and expect more major updates in the coming months.
Preparing your own Transmog Operation
Reckles aka WTBGold in his newest video takes a deep dive in to how to formulate your own auctioning operations to post transmog. And while it's tailored specifically to transmog, there's a lot to be learnt here that can be applied to any market. If you're anxious or a bit lost on what to do with all the pricing information you have available, I'd definitely recommend checking out this video as a starting point to setting up your own TSM operations to do what you want to do.
Setting up TradeSkillMaster to operate how you would do things is going to be better in the long run than importing a public profile. As Reckles said, they're designed to work from the creators perspective, or even specifically designed to try and work on as many servers as possible given that it's a publicly consumed profile. In nearly all cases, there'd be situations where something isn't posting how you'd want or expect them to, or not posting when you would want or expect them to. So being able to run through your operation with your own preferences and thought process as to how an item should be handled will lead to more success on the Auction House. Don't get me wrong, importing a profile can be a great starting point, learning how others have things set up can prompt you to do something different or better. But grabbing something from a pastebin and expecting to get rich is probably the wrong way to look at things.
Discussion Point
When starting out with TSM, if you have, did you import something or make your own groups and operations? What else would you like to see added to the addon or TSM site?
