Since we
last previewed the Garrison Shipyard on the 6.2 PTR
, Blizzard has added many more details on ships--how to build them, their abilities, and how to send them on missions.
This 6.2 PTR preview covers all the different types of ships, their crews with unique racial bonuses, how Ship abilities work, and what the Naval Mission UI looks like. As your ships can get destroyed if you fail missions, you want to make sure you understand the basics before your fleet sinks!
Building and Upgrading Ships
Building each ship takes several hundred Garrison Resources and is completed in a minute. 5 can be added to your Fleet with a Level 1 Shipyard.
There are five types of ships (Carrier, Galleon, Destroyer, Transporter, Submarine). The type determines one of the ship’s abilities/counters. With a Level 1 Shipyard, you can only build Destroyers or Transporters though. Click on the filters below to see the ships in each category:

Destroyer (A)

Galleon (A)

Submarine (A)

Within each ship type, there are specific ships named after lore figures. When a ship has finished building, you will randomly get one of the ships in that category. The “Crew” determines another ship ability, which can range from increased gold to bonus success. These offer bonuses instead of counters, and are similar to Follower Traits.
An key difference from Followers is that ships can be destroyed (and easily replaced). If you fail a Dangerous mission, there is a 50% chance your ship will be destroyed. As building ships are not that expensive and leveling them is not a ton of experience, you’re expected to replenish your fleet fairly easily.
Ships currently do not have levels or item levels. They all start off at Uncommon and can be upgraded to Rare and Epic from experience earned on Naval Missions.
Finally, we’ve seen some changes to the requirements needed for the Shipyard. Creating a Level 1 Shipyard formerly took 5000 Garrison Resources, with another 1000 to build your first ship. On the current PTR, it’s down to 150 Garrison Resources (
Tutti a bordo!
). This is a big deal as the Shipyard is needed to grant access to Tanaan Jungle, and it looks the barrier to entry is much easier.
We’ve also datamined
Potenziare la flotta
which upgrades your Shipyard to Level 2. This currently requires 1000 Garrison Resources, 1000 gold, and 25 completed missions. At level 2, you will unlock
Progetto Navale: Sottomarino
.
Ship Abilities
Ships have abilities that counter Naval Threats, but they are different than Garrison Followers. Ship abilities are
Types
,
Crew
, and
Equipment
.
Type
abilities are similar to Follower abilities,
Crew
abilities are similar to Follower traits, and
Equipment
lets you choose between adding more counters or traits to your ship.
The Type and Crew abilities are permanent, and the two Equipment slots (unlocked at Rare and Epic) are up to the player. However, you cannot ‘reroll’ a ship’s equipment slots—they are permanent. The idea is that ships will be lost to dangerous missions as time goes on, and you will eventually acquire that same ship again as you replenish your fleet.
The Equipment items are sold by
Jorren il Salmastro
and
Kronk Scrostaruggine
.

Some particular ships with a certain type/crew combination are better suited to various types of missions, as you can stack bonuses with similar Equipment ones.
For example, if you wanted to complete missions very quickly, you’d hope for a Night Elf or Blood Elf boat because their Crew ability reduces mission time by 50%, and you can stack that with the Equipment ability
.
Sending Ships on Missions
You send your ships out on missions at the Naval table. The UI is a bit more creative than the Follower UI.
Click on one of the threats on the Naval map to open up the mission. When you have completed all of the threats near your home base, the map opens up and displays threats for all of Draenor.
However, many of these missions cannot be completed! This is due to the presence of
Blockade
missions. You must first complete the challenging Blockade mission before you can continue completing missions in that quadrant.
We’ll save an in-depth preview of Naval Missions and their rewards for a future post as many seem incomplete, but you can check out the different types of Missions in our database:
Combat
,
Oil
,
Alliance Blockades
,
Horde Blockades
,
Training
,
Treasure
