I feel like Ebyssian was chosen as he was more expendable if the story would like to corrupt the Black Dragonflight leader again. Which would be a rather predictable way to re-introduce N'Zoth by having him corrupt another Aspect.
Ebyssian was literally the worst choice, one protected Azeroth, the other, the entire black dragonflight. Ebyssian hid in a cave and so he deserves to be aspect? wtf is this writing.
Sometimes, Plot Armor is needed. Other times, Armor for the Plot is needed.
I give it two addons before one of them sacrifices themself for Azeroth.
Really didn't see that coming, I mean, on one hand we had the seat of the black aspect free, on another hand we had the perfect character, wise, not a single flaw, acting selfless and not seeking to become the aspect. What a surprise, no one saw it coming, great writting honestly. I like how we saw Ebyssian grow as a character, remember 6 years ago when he was the wise old cow ? Well now he's more than that, in DF he got much more character depth, he became the wise old aspect dragon cow and that's what makes that storyline so good. The other two (already forgot their names, if they had a name to begin with) were totally unfit to become aspect, all the character growth was for Ebyssian sadly.I'm so hyped about what's next, now that Ebyssian is the aspect, he'll probably get even more character depth, so much wisdom in him, they can't be done yet
I get that Wrathion is such an accomplished character that he doesn't need to be an aspect to be a badass black dragon who upholds his kind's legacy of protecting Azzeroth...but that's not really the problem with this story. The problem is that everything in Wrathion's story built him up to eventually become the main protector (aka aspect) of Azzeroth among the black dragonflight, since that single goal fueled almost the entirety of his motivations and background elements. "The one uncorrupted black dragon that Azzeroth needed", that is Wrathion. So this situation is like...imagine the story of king Arthur. He starts as a boy on a journey who goes through numerous trails and meets various people, all so that he can one day become the greatest king he can be...only for a random merchant he meets at the last stop of his journey to pull out Excalibur after only giving Arthur one little bit of life advice. What was the whole journey till now even for? Why does this rando get to be king? What was the point of this now pointless story?Ebyssian's story is so small it can be summarized in a single paragraph. "A corrupted black dragon egg was made uncorrupted by a titan artifact wielded by a hero of highmountain. In gratitude Ebyssian pledged to be an advisor to the hero's people, the tauren of highmounten. Fearful of corruption, Ebyssian never left highmountain due to his natural born weakness of the void, and so he never took a stand against deathwing, N'Zoth, or their kin. Eventually he would meet the whelp Wrathion, who's knowledge of the void rescued Ebyssian from the void's influence, thus allowing him to leave highmountain whenever he wanted." That's it. That's the whole story of Ebyssian up till now. The guy can't even take up the role of Merlin as a guide here, he is too insignificant so he's a random merchant.
Honestly, this was the perfect choice for Aspect.<3
It was predictable but in a good way. Sabellian and Wrathion are both so utterly cartoonish that had either of them become aspect it would be 1 patch before they had crumbled to to corruption and would try to overtake the world.
It's funny that people all go "Ebyssian did nothing and hid in a cave for thousands of years!", while forgetting that he during that time, he counseled and guided generation after generation of Highmountain Tribe leaders. Dude got solid leadership experience.
I'm really happy with this ending. This was the outcome I was hoping for.In my opinion Ebyssian is the best option to become aspect. Considering the histories of all three it does make sense. While at the beginning of the expansion I was hoping for Sabellian to become the aspect, watching him squabble with Wrathion and be so uncaring to those he didnt consider "legitimate" children of Neltharion put me off from him. Ebyssian is reliably peaceful and he understands leadership as he has sat council for the Highmountain chieftains for 10,000 years. Also his personality is not super overpowering, leaving room for the black dragonflight to forge a new legacy on it own.
It was Ebyssian who gave us the essence of black dragonflight in BfA, so not a surprise at all.Wrathion is adventurer and Sabellian is nobody, forgotten character brang coz there was nobody else.
I was in Ebyssian’s “camp” from the start. Sabellian and Wrathion were too much “of their father” and lacked any temperance. They wanted the power without having earned that power, and showed no responsibility for what being an Aspect means, if you compare their rather limited needs against what the actual Aspects have been dealing with.If the story of Sabellian’s and Wrathion’s competition had come with some sort of growth along the way, I may have thought otherwise, but each doubled down on the aspects (pun intended) of their mindsets that were the worst while either being willfully ignorant of the depth of Neltharion’s fall (Sabellian) or having the hubris to believe you can just ignore the magnitude of Neltharion’s depravity and be an Aspect despite that (Wrathion). Ultimately, each wanted the *power* and the *position* of the Aspect of Earth without paying the dues. Ebyssian, on the other hand, has spent ages guiding a people he has no personal investment in to become their best selves. And when the time came, relinquished his own needs for that of his kin, not to command, but to help heal, including a sister he never expected existed - yet he did not influence Emberthall, but as a true mentor, simply helped her see possibilities and gave her the freedom to choose her own path. There is an adage that the best person to hold power is the one who does not seek power. Ebyssian has the experience guiding others and has no desire for power, thus will use that power wisely. That said, the takeaway here isn’t who “won” or lost, but that all three bring valuable skills to the table, skills that just don’t “go away” because Sabellian and Wrathion didn’t get the top spot. Wrathion could easily lead the Black Flgiht’s outward-facing forces, as he already does - though his brashness is now tempered by working *with* his brothers. Wrathion as the liaison between the Black flight and the mortal races? To be turn on a dime if some crisis comes up? Wrathion’s forces are entrenched in mortal lands, and would allow the BlackFlight to respond to crises quickly and efficiently. Sabellian, on the other hand, has kept his “wing” together for decades, and managed to raise young. Who better to help with the infrastructure of the Black Flight? Raising and training young dragons, keeping the “House” in order? It is going to take all three to restore the Black Dragonflight to what they should have been had Neltharion not fallen. With Wrathion “boots on the ground” in the world and Sabellian being the seneschal, or steward, of the Flight, that allows Ebyssian to use his role of Aspect to heal the wounds caused by Neltharion’s fall. Instead of being a monolithic, top-down dictatorship, the Black Flight is now more egalitarian, with “power” and responsibility shared. With each having agency within their wheelhouse, while also relying on each other for support, Neltharion’s legacy is truly sundered, and the Black Flight can once again stand with their greater kinfolk amongst the other flights in solidarity, as they once used to.
