Living Steel


Living Steel Summoning Forged in Hall of the Penitent within central Dry Steppes to summon a powerful enemy. Requires 2 in World Tier 3 and 5 in World Tier 4. Found in Helltides from Tortured Gift of Living Steel. Drops randomly from Elites, Local Events, Treasure Goblins, Whisper Caches, Hellborne, and Blood Maiden. Warm to the touch. Requires Level 68

For all who are not into seasonal content, or have been absent for several months or so, or just came looking for what these do and why you may want to use them, here's the scoop:

You can either port to The Onyx Watchtower, and head to the first dungeon to your west, Hall of The Penitent, there are a couple of the Alters of Lilith between the Onyx Watchtower waypoint and this dungeon (it has a horned skull at its top) is where you are going. It is closer travelling from the Onyx Watchtower than from Ked Bardu. I have tried travel from Ked Bardu as well, it is longer but less trash mobs around to ride through and a few more turns, but longer straight-aways to gallop through, so, your choice on how you're getting to the dungeon. Both seem about the same for time overall.

The dungeon is a small diamond shaped set of halls, and it randomly has rooms or 'closets' more like it in it, you enter via the bottom or sides, clear the trash to get to the top, (you don't need to clear all of it) there will be a flashing Light-Touched Altar there, interact with it and you'll offer up your Living Steel, uses 2 for World Tier III or 5 for World Tier IV, to summon the boss. As a level 100 Sorcerer still using decent legacy gear, all frost spec, I can get him down on the second vulnerable state. He is level 75, NOT tier 75, so it is a fairly easy fight. If you are trying to farm these shards, then as I found out, clearing the dungeon, then porting out after finishing the boss and then travelling back does not work. Simply port out of the dungeon, then log out of the game, and log back in (not exiting, just returning to your character selection screen and going back in). Rinse and repeat.

You typically get the following, the Shard of Agony (why you're here in this dungeon) and an assortment of loot: a couple of legendary's, a unique, a few rare's and gold. You are not guaranteed to get a unique, if you don't it will be replaced with legendary's. As this dungeon has level 75 mobs, your item levels for legendary gear is lower, not maxed at 925 like you would expect for World Tier IV, I've seen 825 to 889 so far. Out of 10 tries in a row, I received 7 unique's, 3 of them were at item level 925, and I also received a mount cosmetic horse armor, "Demonbinder".

Note: Grigoire uses lots of lightning, so resistance against that is important and during the fight, he will create 'lightning fences' that stop you from walking/running to parts of the arena but you can teleport (as a sorcerer) through the fences. He'll summon adds, and smash you with his mace, he is a giant version of the Dreadknight.

The Shard of Agony is used to summon the Uber boss, Duriel, of whom the summoner has a chance at an Uber unique piece of gear. You will need 2 of these shards to summon Duriel. I'll also mention that there is a tormented version of Grigoire, The Galvanic Saint, where you need more items to summon him, 15 living steel and 2 stygian stones. To summon this version, when you interact with the Altar, a window pops up to the left of your screen, and the top portion has a title box, with an arrow on the right, in white, if you left click that arrow, then it shows a different "Required Items" list, if you can't do this version, just left click on the white arrow that is now on the left of the title box to return to the normal version of Grigiore. I'm not there yet in my gear or survivability, so I'll leave those details for the talented individuals who are top shelf in D4.
