TL;DR: Discord usernames are changing to remove four-digit discriminators. Display Names are being added so how you appear to other users stays the same. We will be assigning priority to choose your new username based on when you registered for Discord, Nitro status, and ownership of partner and verified servers. Users with common names (and even some uncommon ones!) will have to come up with something unique, since only one user can use each name - though this can be mitigated by the use of a common Display Name or individual Server Nicknames, those aren't perfect solutions since it's another factor in trying to find and add friends.

Another downside is that people with uncommon nicknames are now actually *easier* to find, which may not necessarily be a good thing on the internet - assuming they do secure their original username, popular community figures don't have the protection of that four-digit discriminator anymore, though Discord can at least be set to ignore messages from people who aren't already friends or members of the same servers.
