Hello! Welcome to the 268th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
This week we take a look back on how people's journey in gold making have been so far and their reflections on profits gained. We also look ahead to how work orders will look in 10.0.7 and some tips for old world methods that are still viable. In addition, we discuss gathering and it's profitability over time.
My name is
Samadan
and I'll be your guide through the World of Gold Making!
Tales of Gold Making
Now that we are well into the expansion and the initial hype and excitement has tailed off, how has everyone's experience in gold making been?
It’s nearing March, game is in rest mode until the next big content patch. So now’s the time to talk profit numbers goblins. How much profit have you made? Also add some reflection on the journey.
Started with 8M, I’m now at roughly 8,2M.
No Profits to be made for lazy people like me. I miss my mission table gold printing machine.
It's true, the main focus of professions has been towards working the market and selling via commissions, but they are very time intensive tasks and not everyone has that much time to invest in the game. Alt armies can still be used for gold missions once ilevel is high enough as well as dragon races, but these still require a bit of time to play.
It's understandable really. Mission tables took a while to get set up with numbers of alts and getting the tables set up. The time played was front loaded. Once you had it set up however, the alt armies could very quickly cycle through the tables and effectively print gold.
I made about 10m in the first few weeks, and I'm very happy with that. Think I had about 2-3m before DF (but didn't end up actually needing much starting capital with the route I took)
I stopped goldmaking when profits got small and I just kinda got bored of crafting all evening. Looking forward to more opportunities next patch(es).
My net profit was about 65-70 mil, starting the xpac with 1 mil on area52. I played extremely hard first 2 weeks of launch, easily 10 hours a day.
Before launch, the prof system really grabbed me. I loved how complex it was and I felt sure that if I understood it at launch, I would be able to exploit the market well by being one of the few who did.
The key insight that allowed me to profit hugely was the idea of leveraging inspiration to be able to proc rank 3s with only rank 2 mats being used. I know this is a very well known concept now, but on launch it allowed me to sell flasks and pots with massive profit margins.
Originally i planned to have a toon for every prof, and I leveled them all and tested them out on the first week. I made a bit from blacksmith alloys, inscription inks, and lw reagents, but by far my biggest earner was actually the prof I had completely overlooked for all of my prep: enchanting.
On the last day of the first week, I looked at how much Sophics were selling for and thought “wtf am I doing, THIS is what I need to sell”. So I dropped inscription on my main and instantly went to max my enchanting. It took an insane amount of gold but luckily I had made money with alloys and had some savings. I powered enchanting to 100 at great expense at like midnight on Monday of the first week, doing every prof shuffle for rep and knowledge before swapping to enchanting. I managed to have max artisans rep for the first raid week.
On the first day of raid, I had narrowed my gold making to 3 things: enchanting and potion alchemist on my main, and an alt with phial alchemy, all max knowledge and rep.
That first raid day I was nonstop crafting and auctioning, probably made about 20 mil off of alchemy. I then learned about having a 2nd account for just auctioning so I could keep crafting on my main, and for the next 2 weeks I almost exclusively crafted Sophic and frozen devotions once phial profits dried up, probably making around 50 mil from those.
I met my gold making goals and now I am taking a break from any crafting for the rest of the patch. I had great fun doing it, to see my plans before hand come to fruition, and having mastery of the system right away from my own research and hypotheses was so cool, I felt like a scientist!
This is a great example of being prepared beforehand and adapting to the market. It also requires a large amount of time especially at the start of an expansion. Not something everyone can do, but it's a sure way to maximise results early.
u/clapfosho made a lengthy post
going into detail in their journey of gold making using Alchemical Theory.
TLDR:
I spent 2 months cashing in the basically untapped market of Alchemical Theory but now have been priced out by people willing to sell at margins that don’t make sense to compete with.
The post goes into a lot of detail about lessons learned in the journey which is useful for the mindset of a gold maker, but also highlights this is with a large amount of time played. "Time is money friend!"
For me, I have taken a step back from focusing on just gold making and really just enjoyed playing the game. With that comes some progression in professions, but with a focus on the more casual side of gold making. That means a bit of gathering, some daily cooldowns and basic gear. I am not the target market of sitting in trade chat trying to scrape together commissions, I prefer to list what I can on the Auction House and do something productive in the limited time I have to play.
How has your journey been so far?
Public Order Changes in 10.0.7
Manthieus
has highlighted some changes found on the PTR where public work orders have been changed back to giving the player the choice of whether to include crafting reagents in work orders...
He goes through the implications of this with the main premise being that the commission is unlikely to cover the cost of some materials if not included making crafts at a loss in gold for many. Yet the incentive to complete the order will still be high due to many players needing work orders to help level up their professions.
It's not surprising at this stage until there are more materials and recipes injecting new life into professions chasing "the next best thing". At this point, professions are mainly looked at as catch-up gear bar a few BIS items.
Is Gathering Still Worth It?
Oftentimes, players get despondent with the steady decline of prices in materials. Even more so this time round because this is the first time we have had region wide commodities at the start of an expansion. Usually, prices are extremely high at the start and then drop off significantly after. With more players driving the overall prices down on every server in the same pool, the drop off has been sharper than usual.
At release I could easily earn 35k no sweat a day.
But now everything has dumped in price.
Hochenblume, 48 silver Rousing fire, 8 gold Rousing earth, 6 to 7 gold Sverige ore, between 50 silver to a few gold each. Khaz gore went from 250 to 100 gold now
Add to that, each vein doesn't give much. I farm literally anything, and a standard vein gives like 3 ore worth 50 s each.
Same with Hochenblume. I know draconium, and bubble poppy and above give decent, but I don't see them that frequently.
I'm at a point where mythic runs str becoming expensive because of how prices has dumped.
What should I do? Just continue earning gold crumbs, or is there something else worth doing?
Skinning is also c**p, had that and turned back to herb.
Was thinking about engineering since I am a hunter, but I have heard alot of mixed opinions about it.
I don't really know how to earn gold except leveling up alts and just run dragon races every day.
This is a common dilemma with players and the difficulty this expansion with knowledge points being slow to build up up and maximise, swapping professions frequently can put you further and further behind.
I don't see it as worthless. The more knowledge you get each week the better you are and more stuff you get. Once the next patch hits with new areas and maybe new nodes etc, if you got max knowledge and someone else who is rotating profs all the time (seems like you are doing) has half the knowledge, who's going to make more gold per hour?
I rotate my gatherers each week to do the weekly quest and get the 10 or so knowledge that drops off nodes. Once i get the epic knowledge drop, that's usually it for the week and I don't gather on that char, I move to the next one.
HUGE difference for me when I am doing a new lvl 60 and working on their gathering to my lvl 70 who has done it since DF.
All professions right now are more rewarding the farther you are than everyone else in that profession. For gathering that means, more gathering than anyone else.
If you aren't maxed out on your gathering profession, then you are going to make a lot less than someone who is maxed (and yes, you can be max by now).
My suggestion, either enjoy the speed at which you are improving your profession or if you really want to make money then go hardcore into gathering profession knowledge.
Gathering still gives consistent gold for the time invested and is always going to get diminishing returns over the course of an expansion. Personally, I am never in favour of swapping professions, I prefer to pick up a different profession on and alt and try it that way.
5 Tips for Gold Making
Iceberg Gaming
has put together some gold making methods highlighting different ones each month. This time they are mainly old world methods that are still relevant today, but also a specific one for DF tailoring...

Its the first of the month so wake up wake up wake up and check out the top 5 gold farms on my radar for this month! In this video I give the top 5 gold farms I am running this month and giving my reasons why. Everything is kinda trash right now so we are focused on efficiency this month! These farms might not be super high reward, but they are very low effort which equates out to a good use of your time, in my opinion. For more info on each individual farm, see the link in the video description. Except number 3, the guide for #3 is scheduled to be posted this weekend.
Number 1: Tomes of Illusions.
There are 8 total of these with varying degrees of profitability and sale rate but they are all very much worth it in my opinion. I generally make around 50k gold per week on these and it only takes a couple minutes to recraft them.
Number 2: Tillers Farm.
This is a great place to...farm...materials! It takes a couple days investment to set up but you can easily crank out tons of decent value items for very low effort once you have it set up.
Number 3: Flipping cloth
into awakeneds through tailoring. This is a semi afk farm in that you can buy the cloth and then go afk while you unravel them into awakeneds. You do need to have the correct tailoring talents to make this work, for more info see the video
https://youtu.be/7kqs5mjed2g?t=107
Number 4: Crafted Dreadful Gladiator Gear.
Yes these are still selling. The sell rate and the prices are lower than they were last year but people are still buying them for the Mage Tower. The reason for the drop is because Blizzard changed the scaling for the Mage Tower and these items are no longer quite as "essential" as they were before.
Number 5: Garrison goldmaking.
There are several ways to make gold with your garrison. Most of them are pretty low reward, but considering you can do them from your phone while you are at work, that makes them some of the most efficient gold making strategies in the entire game!
Do you agree with my list? What are you running this month? Any support, especially on the Youtube video itself, is greatly appreciated.
Often, players forget old markets but they can still net a bit of gold if you're willing to invest some time. The beauty of these are that they steer away from the crafting work order system which is less rewarding for the casual player unable to invest time in marketing their wares.
The third tip for Awakened Frost from tailoring is interesting as a current content method. Tailoring and enchanting have several of these including the tailoring cooldowns, so can be a worthwhile investment of knowledge for casual gold makers.
