8.3 Preparations: Season 4 Awakened Affix - Overview, Obelisk Rotation, Deplete Buff Removed

Prepare for Patch 8.3 by learning about the Seasonal Awakened Affix! This is the Season 4 Affix for Mythic+ and some recent changes have been found on the PTR including an Obelisk Rotation, the removal of the Deplete Buff ("Bob" buff) and a very hard hitting Physical Tankbuster.

This affix was formerly named Corrupted, but was changed to
Awakened
, probably to avoid confusion with Corrupted Gear. The Awakened affix will place 4 Black Empire obelisks in the dungeon at various points. When interacting with an Obelisk, you will cross into N'zoth's realm and be attacked by the Obelisk's Defense Lieutenant, which will summon some additional dangerous adds to aid it. When the Lieutenant dies, a portal will appear on its corpse, allowing you to return to reality. While you're in N'zoth's realm, you are completely phased from the rest of the dungeon and are immune and invisible to everything in reality. You're able to use these portals to skip whatever you want, as long as you kite the Lieutenant to where you want to exit.
However, you can opt to not kill some 4 Lieutenants before engaging the last boss, but that will cause all remaining alive Lieutenants to teleport to join the encounter and you'll have to defeat them all at once. The benefit is that Lieutenants that are teleported to the final boss will not summon their extra adds. You'll have to choose whether to deal with the Lieutenants on the final boss without extra adds, or deal with them at the Obelisks and let them summon extra adds.

but we're going to cover some recent findings below.
The Tankbuster of Doom
The "B" Pillar which summons the "Tank Lieutenant" has a massive Tankbuster called
Briseur d’esprit
. Here are some details about this cast:
Deals Physical Damage
2 second cast and will recast until successful
Cannot be Blocked, despite being Physical
Cannot be Dodged or Parried
Cannot be Spell Reflected
Can be Outranged (20 yds)
Can be Line-of-Sighted
Can be Staggered
Can be reduced by Damage Reduction Abilities
Cast about every 10 seconds
Let's get some numbers going. With no cooldowns on a +15 key, this ability hits a Blood DK for 700k damage and a Prot Warrior for 500k damage. Monks laugh at this cast because of stagger, but Warriors are going to have to take this hit to the face with full cooldowns up or just run the entire time as their main mitigation spell, Block, doesn't work! You can't even have a Havoc DH taunt the cast because it's not dodgeable. And that's just on a +15, imagine when the keys go higher, your Tank will either have to constantly run, or pillar hump a corner to survive.
Here's the damage done to a DK without any cooldowns.
The Teleporting Tentacles
If you click on the "D" pillar that summons the Blob or Ooze, he'll cast

This does lead to a very interesting strategy for dealing with them. If the party groups up over 40 yards away from their spawn point, the Tentacles will all teleport the same spot and AoE stuns and
Rayon solaire
can be used to negate their damage.
Obelisk Rotation
Compared to Emissary positioning, the Obelisks of the Awakened Affix are always in the same 4 locations per dungeon. However, the type of Obelisk and the related Lieutenant do appear to have at least two rotations.
For example, the picture below is one of the Obelisk rotations that has been on the PTR. The second Obelisk rotation swaps the C and D pillars, swapping the Spider and Blob locations.
I think this is a great change from Beguilling, where each week had Emissaries in completely different locations and you had to remember which type of Emissary it was too. Now, there's only minor differences when the rotation changes, while still making players change your route based on affixes and Obelisk positioning.
The last thing that I've found is that on the PTR, the Obelisk rotation doesn't seem to rotate every week. More data is needed, but my current theory is that the Obelisks flip-flop every 2 weeks, which would reduce the number of Tuesday deplete keys.
Failure Buff Removed
When we
first reported on the Awakened (Corrupted) Affix
, we noted that the buff that can be obtained when the key timer expires will be returning. This "Bob" buff seems to have been removed at some point. The fish that gives it doesn't appear at the beginning of the instance, or after any boss even after the timer has expired. He may still exist somewhere or under different conditions, but I wasn't able to find him anywhere.
If I had to guess, this change was to prevent the "Bob run" Season 2 strategy of completing a weekly key since the Weekly Mythic+ chest will now be awarding Mythic level raid loot. This strategy was to intentionally suicide at the beginning of the instance over and over again until the timer expired which allowed you to attempt the dungeon with 20% more damage and healing instantly, as well as Time Warp/Bloodlust/Heroism whenever you wanted it. The downside is that you don't time the key, but if you're just going for a Weekly completion, this was the easiest way to complete it.
However, removing this buff does remove some incentive for finishing the key after the timer has expired. This buff also helped some groups finish higher level keys; wiping to a boss and then not having Lust means you have to wait for it to come back off cooldown. Alternatively, there are just some hard bosses like Galvazzt or King's Rest that could just be made easier with 20% damage and healing after the key has timed out.
