Much has been made of the
customization options
coming in Shadowlands, but it's an interesting time for transmog updates as well. This post will go over what's new with transmog in the Shadowlands pre-patch!
Artifact Transmog Restrictions Loosened
The biggest transmog change in the Shadowlands pre-patch is the loosing of artifact weapon transmog restrictions. Artifacts now have class-wide appearances by classifying each appearance under your respective weapon categories. By treating artifact appearances like normal weapons, this means there are no restrictions on duplicate appearances or restrictions on what hand they can be used in. So you can dual-wield Doomhammer if you like, or transmog your MH and OH to two different artifacts!
The old artifact system is still present for your current spec's artifact, allowing a greater degree of flexibility (ie a caster can transmog a sword into an artifact appearance staff).
New things you can do include:
Transmog different appearances of the same artifact as your MH/OH
Transmog different colors of the same artifact as your MH/OH
Transmog different artifacts as your MH/OH
Use one spec's artifact appearance while in another spec
Transmog the conjured weapons like
Schuppenstachel
and
Eidsucher
without needing the main artifact equipped
Use offhand weapons like
Zorn der Steinmutter
in your MH slot
**Usual transmog restrictions apply to weapon types
If you're now interested in farming some artifacts for transmog, check out our
Artifact Appearance Guides
and
Appearance Calculator
. Our Shadowlands Dressing Room also supports all of these changes!

Druid Artifact Forms Not Tied to Weapon Transmog
In BFA, you can choose an Artifact Tint for Bear or Cat form if you have that specific Druid artifact used as transmog. This really limited transmog options as you were locked into a weapon and had to choose between a unique Bear or Cat appearance--both couldn't be active at the same time.
By moving Druid form customization to the barbershop, you do not need to select an Artifact Weapon as transmog in order to unlock Bear and Cat form customization!
Unlocks for the Artifact customizations are account-wide, so once you unlock an appearance, all Druids in your account can use them.
The point above include the Mage Tower appearances.
You can use both Guardian and Feral Artifact appearances as customization for any spec
Exile's Reach Weapons
The Shadowlands pre-patch introduces a new beginner zone,
Exile's Reach
. Upon completing the zone, you can buy simple HD weapons from the quartermaster:
Alliance Weapons:
Expeditionsgroßschwert
Expenditionskurzschwert
Expeditionsstecken
Expeditionsknüppel
Expenditionsstab
Expeditionsdolch
Expeditionslangbogen
Horde Weapons:
Expeditionsaxt
Expeditionsgroßaxt
Expeditionslangbogen
Expeditionsdolch
Expenditionsstab
Expeditionsknüppel
Expeditionsstecken
Recolored Alliance Warfront Sets from Death's Rising Event
Quartermasters in the Shadowlands pre-patch sell Argent Conscript gear that resemble unused Arathi Warfront armor appearances for the Alliance (Horde appear to pick up these appearances from quests). While some players are disappointed the event doesn't reward gear with Undead Slaying appearances, people interested in faction-themed sets may want to pick up these sets. Even if the armor isn't that exciting, it's good catch-up gear for brand-new alts.
You can find pictures of all the new appearances
here

Transmog Wands Over 1H Weapons
Wands can be transmogged to other main-hand weapons. Wands have long been the bane of transmog as they had limited appearances and players could not transmog over them to their iconic looks from past expansions.
Mages and Warlocks can transmog wands to daggers and swords.
Priests can transmog wands to 1H maces and daggers.
Greater Weapon Flexibility for Some Classes
Dual-wield options have been added for some specializations in Shadowlands, such as Single-Minded Fury, leading to greater transmog flexibility. For example, you can use the Mage Tower Protection Warrior flails as your Mainhand and Offhand transmog with Single-Minded Fury in the pre-patch!
The specs with weapon changes include:
Fury Warriors can dual-wield 1H weapons with
Zielstrebiger Furor
Brewmaster Monks can dual-wield 1H weapons
Windwalker Monks can use 2H weapons
Frost Death Knights can use 2H weapons
