Adam Fletcher
revealed details about the first Ladder seasons of Diablo II: Resurrected.
With Patch 2.4, D2:R players will be able to experience a fresh start, enjoy exclusive content, and hunt for high ladder finishes. We take a look at the interview's main points and speculate about what to expect with the release of Ladder Season 1.
News: D2:R Developer Interview with MrLlamaSC
Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 1 Release Date
So when is Diablo II: Resurrected's first Ladder Season going to start?
Unfortunately, the interview about Patch 2.4 didn't deliver a definitive answer. What Rob Gallerani did unveil, though, was that they plan to make ladder seasons four months long. Despite the obvious fact of being able to fit three seasons into one calendar year, Gallerani thinks that a duration of four months hits the sweet spot of giving more casual players enough time to play while still keeping the more engaged playerbase entertained.
Diablo II: Resurrected Patch 2.4 Highlights - Ladder Soon, Class Changes
Introducing new ladder seasons in Diablo II: Resurrected adds yet another layer to the giant Blizzard content cycle. Team 2 will try to keep player retention, one of the core issues of online ARPGs, as low as possible, and a key to success in this regard is the introduction of new content. Throughout the interview, the developers underlined that Season 1 is just the beginning, and although they are going to release one of D2's meatiest content patches ever, they try to keep the original vision of Diablo II intact.
Diablo II: Resurrected Patch 2.4. Public Test Realm
To test the massive changes planned with Patch 2.4, the development team will set up a Public Test Realm. Similar to WoW's PTR management, this will give players the chance to provide extensive feedback regarding planned content.
But before that, Team 2 wants players to test the long-awaited fixes to D2:R's ongoing database issues. Even weeks after release, players have been plagued by
login queues, random disconnects, and disappearing characters
. Back then, the developers provided an
in-depth look into these issues
, indicating that they are working on fixes involving complex database and software restructuring.
Speculating on the matter, we should see a first PTR candidate during the first two weeks of the new year, while the 2.4 PTR patch could go live during the third or fourth week of January. That again should give us a release date sometime during February.
Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 1 Exclusive Content
Ladder Season Stash Tabs
Before talking about exclusive content, Gallerani addresses the development team's ideas regarding Stash management during and after Ladder Season 1. In general, stash tabs should behave as follows:
1. Ladder Season 1 starts, you create a Ladder character, you have three stash tabs at your disposal.
2. Ladder Season 1 ends. Your Ladder character will be converted into a Non-Ladder character. Your three stash tabs will roll over to your Non-Ladder stash but it will be "withdraw-only".
3. Ladder Season 2 starts. You create yet another Ladder character with a fresh stash and three tabs.
4. Ladder Season 2 ends. At this moment, your Non-Ladder characters have seven stash tabs - your personal stash, three Non-Ladder tabs, and the three withdraw-only stash tabs from Season 1. As soon as Season 2 ends, your Season 1 withdraw-only stash tabs will be deleted and replaced by your Season 2 stash tabs which will be withdraw-only as well, of course.
The idea of remove-only stash tabs isn't new in the ARPG world. However, it creates a whole new level of meaning for a Diablo II Ladder Season. Most importantly, items farmed during your ladder adventure will roll over to your main stash, making the time investment during a season much more worthwhile.
Ladder Season Exclusive Runewords
In the interview, Gallerani and Cederquist revealed the addition of ladder-exclusive runewords with the release of Patch 2.4. Even during the interview, numerous players asked if they would be able to craft these runewords in single-player mode as well. Cederquist commented that runewords will most likely roll over into the other game modes after the end of the season they are associated with. They also said that the team plans to introduce a few runewords with every new season start.
Runewords in Diablo II: Resurrected
Exclusivity in Diablo titles is a double-edged sword. While it's great to hear that these shiny new runewords will be craftable for everyone once the season has ended, it is definitely a bummer that "offline" players will have to wait for that to happen. In the end, we hope to see more season-exclusive content alongside general game changes to keep both Non-Ladder and Ladder players entertained and engaged.
