Mercenaries in Diablo 4 are role-based NPCs that accompany players in combat. Both Diablo II: Resurrected and Diablo 3 will be familiar with the basic mechanics. However, in Diablo 4, you can now have both a Primary Mercenary for everyday solo use, plus a Secondary Mercenary to help with situational issues. By playing with your Mercenary, you improve your standing with them, giving you access to upgrades, barter opportunities, and more!
Mercenaries Overview
Starting with the launch of Vessel of Hatred, players can enlist Mercenaries to fight by their side as a combat companion. Mercenaries have dedicated skill trees and abilities that can be used to complement a player's preferred playstyle - Sorcerers who play more aggressively may opt for Raheir's defensive support, while those running a more balanced build may prefer Aldkin and his engulfing flame ability.
Unlike Mercenaries and Followers from previous franchises, D4 Mercenaries cannot use equipped gear. They have a set weapon based on which skill tree they are using.
Mercenary Skills
Each Mercenary has two possible Skill Trees. While you can learn all the skills, you can only have one tree active at one time. The selected tree dictates their Weapon and their Basic Attack. You can activate a maximum of four skills - an active Mercenary Core skill with one Core Passive, and one Mercenary Iconic skill with one Iconic Passive.
The four Mercenaries are Raheir, the Shieldbearer, Varyana, the Berserker Crone, Aldkin, the Cursed Child, and Subo, the Drunken Archer. Here's what we know about each Diablo 4 Mercenary so far.
Raheir, the Shieldbearer
Archetype:
Tank
Raheir is a blacksmith trained by the Iron Wolves, using his massive shield to block enemy attacks and provide defensive support. Raheir has an AoE Barrier ability that mitigates incoming damage for himself and nearby players and bolsters Armor and defensive buffs through Resiliency. Raheir should be the primary choice for players running more aggressive builds who would benefit from additional survivability.
Raheir Shield Charge Skill Tree
Raheir's Shield Charge tree focuses on Taunts. Within this tree, you can choose combinations of extra Armor, Slowing enemies, Damage Reduction, pulling in enemies, increasing damage, or applying Vulnerable.

Raheir's Ground Slam Skill Tree
Raheir's Shield Charge tree focuses on Crowd Control, although there are also a good share of Taunts and Damage mitigation here as well. This tree gives choices for healing you, improving Resistances, or increasing damage.

Varyana, the Berserker Crone
Archetype:
Berserker DPS
A butcher and former cannibal, Varyana is a Berserker specializing in close-range combat. This bloodthirsty brawler has a killstreak mechanic that increases in strength as she kills enemies, and her grip ability pulls enemies into melee range. Varyana looks to be a well-rounded Mercenary that will work well with most playstyles. She seems particularly good for melee DPS builds.
Varyana's Cleave Skill Tree
Varyana's Cleave Skill Tree starts with a big hit with a high probability for applying a heavy Bleed DoT. This tree also offers choices of adding to your Attack Speed, applying Vulnerable, reducing damage, applying a small Heal, or pulling enemies in to her.

Varyana's Shockwave Skill Tree starts with a large Physical attack with Knock Down and increased Critical Strike Chance. More abilities increase the Knock Downs, but also includes a choice to increase damage to any enemies affected by any of her Crowd Control effects or Impairment Resistance. There is also selections for providing guaranteed Overpowers or increasing Lucky Hit chance.

Aldkin, the Cursed Child
Archetype:
Shadow/Fire Caster
This half-demon creature can shapeshift between forms and deal devastating AoE Fire Damage to enemies, engulfing the battlefield in flames. Aldkin will likely be a strong Mercenary choice for builds with strong survivability and those who need assistance with AoE encounters. Aldkin's skills reflect a shadow mage archtype.
Aldkin's Haunt Skill Tree
Aldkin's Haunt skill tree focuses on Shadow damage, with abilities that can Daze, Stun, Slow, and apply Vulnerable, as well as instantly kill non-elite enemies at 40% health affected with one of their skills.

Subo, the Drunken Archer
Archetype:
Rogue DPS
This ranged bounty hunter offers ranged AoE support, unleashing barrages of arrows on groups of enemies from a distance. This archer provides player support by marking targets that grant buffs when killed. Expected to fall somewhere between the playstyle supplementation of Varyana and Aldkin, Subo should work well with most builds.
Subo's Wire Tap Skill Tree
The Wire Trap tree starts with a big-damage skill that Stuns enemies. Choices in this tree include increasing movement speed after damaging Elites, Slowing enemies, improving Crit Strike damage, applying Vulnerable, and increasing Crowd Control duration.

Mercenary Systems and Upgrades
From recruiting Mercenaries in the Mercenary Den to upgrading their abilities, the Diablo 4 Mercenary system offers further options for build and playstyle customization. There are several different layers to this system, including a reputation called Rapport, Bartering, Trade Agreements, Primary Mercenaries, Reinforcements, and Opportunities.
How to Get a Mercenary
Players can recruit a Primary and Secondary Mercenary in the Mercenary Den.
Primary Mercenaries serve as a main combat companion, automatically joining your party when playing solo.
Secondary Mercenaries, also referred to as Reinforcements, provide supplemental support under specific circumstances called Opportunities.
Opportunities
can consist of different situations, such as the player using a specific skill or becoming Crowd Controlled. This adds an additional layer of depth to playstyle customization, allowing players to prioritize different abilities or gearing choices based on their Primary and Secondary Mercenaries.
The Rapport System
Mercenary Rapport functions similarly to seasonal reputations, such as the Season 5 Mother's Blessing system. Playing alongside each Mercenary will improve your Rapport, granting access to Mercenary upgrades and skill points, rewards, and improved Bartering options.
The more you play with a specific Mercenary, the stronger they become. Rewards from the Rapport system will include passive effects, such as increasing the rate at which players earn Pale Marks, the currency used for Trade Agreements and Bartering.
Bartering
Bartering allows players to purchase gear and currencies through Mercenaries with Pale Marks, a currency gained through Rapport and completing activities with your Mercenary.
Stay tuned as we learn more about Mercenaries in Diablo 4, their Unique Skills, and how they will fit into the Vessel of Hatred storyline.

I remember early on in D3 how often the followers would die then over the years how many changes they made to the followers; these followers are going to die all the time almost useless.
