Understanding how to select, change, and upgrade gear in Diablo 4 is an important part of finding success in both leveling and endgame content. Ignoring the details of itemization leaves player power on the table, making challenging content significantly more difficult.
This Gear Selection and Itemization Guide will help you understand the various traits of armor, weapons, and jewelry, how to change and upgrade gear, and how to optimize gear to fit the specific needs of your class, build, and playstyle. We cover essential gear properties such as Inherent Physical Characteristics, Item Affixes, Legendary Aspects, and the Tempering and Masterworking upgrade systems. The more you understand about Diablo 4 gearing and itemization, the easier it is to make the best gear choices.
Gear Quality in Diablo 4
Gear in Diablo 4 has six qualities and three subqualities that can affect them:
Normal
Magic
Rare
Legendary
Unique
Mythic Unique
The three subqualities that can modify items, listed in ascending quality, are
Normal
,
Sacred
, and
Ancestral
. Sacred items have improved Affix ranges compared to Normal items, and Ancestral items have the highest possible ranges. Items are of one quality and one subquality, meaning you can have Normal Rare, Sacred Magic, or Ancestral Legendary items, and so on. Sacred items drop in World Tier 3, and Ancestral items can be found in World Tier 4.
Normal do not have Affixes, Magic items have one Affix, Rare items drop with two Affixes, and Legendaries have three Affixes and a Legendary Aspect. Uniques have a Unique Power as well as four Affixes that cannot be changed at the Occultist, and they cannot be Tempered. Mythic Uniques, also referred to as Uber Uniques, are the same as Uniques in Affix quantity and also have a Unique Power, though they are typically much more powerful and harder to find.
Gear and Itemization in Diablo 4
Players coming from other games may find Diablo 4's gear and itemization to be a somewhat different experience. Instead of farming a particular mob or place to get a specific dropped item with predictable stats and item levels, Diablo 4's system is modular and much more flexible. You can reroll an undesirable trait, apply Legendary Aspects to other items, and upgrade all types of gear through Masterworking to improve its Affixes. It's worth noting that Masterworking is very expensive and should be reserved for high-quality gear in endgame content.
The key to gearing in Diablo 4 is understanding the different traits gear can have, as well as what can and cannot be changed. This system is surprisingly flexible and customizable, but it has its limitations.
Each item's tooltip includes the following:
Inherent Physical Characteristic:
0-2 fixed qualities based on gear type.
Item Affixes:
1-4 bonuses depending on gear quality. One Affix may be changed on Rare and Legendary items through Enchanting at the Occultist.
Legendary Aspect:
1 major power on Legendary items. Legendary Aspects are stored in the Codex of Power and can be applied to Rare and Legendary items through Imprinting at the Occultist.
Unique Power:
1 major power on Unique items.

Gear Properties in Diablo 4
All items greater than Normal quality have two properties: Inherent Physical Characteristics and Item Affixes. Understanding how these work will help you learn what you can and cannot change and may be a pivotal element to planning your gear strategy.
Inherent Physical Characteristics
An item's Inherent Physical Characteristics are
fixed
traits on Magic, Rare, Legendary items based on the item type. These are
permanent
to that item and cannot be changed, although the values will improve with higher item levels. Unique items can have different characteristics specific to that item, such as providing Vulnerable Damage instead of the Damage Over Time that Axes normally have. Normal-quality armor and weapons do not have Characteristics, and there are no Normal-quality Rings or Amulets.
The charts below show the Inherent Physical Characteristic based on gear type. Two items, Legs and Boots, can have one of the listed Inherent Physical Characteristics, depending on quality. Rings have two different Elemental Resistance Characteristics instead of a single Characteristic.

Inherent Physical Characteristics and Gear Selection
Understanding how Inherent Physical Characteristics work will influence your weapon choices in particular. Everyone wears the same armor pieces, but you have a variety of weapon choices, and some may be significantly better for your build than others. For example, a build with reliable sources of guaranteed Overpower may prefer One-Handed Maces for their inherent Overpower Damage, while Critical Strike-focused builds will likely prioritize Swords.
Item Affixes
Item Affixes
are desirable traits added to Magic, Rare, Legendary, and Unique items, such as +1 to Defensive Skills, +82 Strength, or % Cooldown Reduction. A very large number of Magic Affixes are possible, though not all will be beneficial to your class and build. Normal-quality items have no Affixes.
The number of Item Affixes present on an item is determined by its quality. The number of Tempering Affixes that can be added to an item is determined by both its quality and subquality.

Reading the Item Tooltip
Every gear item tooltip above Normal quality has two sections: one for Inherent Physical Characteristics and one for Affixes. These are divided by the tooltip lines, with Characteristics in the top section below Item Power and Affixes below the wide horizontal line. For example, this Magic item has one Characteristic and one Affix, and the Rare item has four Characteristics and two Affixes:
Compare this to the following three Legendary items. The Necklace of Shredding Blades and Gravitational Spellbinder both have Inherent Characteristics, but the Undying Runic Skullcap only has Armor and no unique Characteristic, which is normal for a Helm. All three have three Affixes, with the Legendary Affix in orange:
When you put a new Legendary Aspect on a Rare or Legendary item, the target item's Characteristics and Affixes are retained (Characteristics' effects are pre-determined by item type, but the values may change depending on the Item Levels). In other words, if you Imprint an Aspect from Weapon A onto Weapon B, Weapon B's Characteristic and Affixes are retained; they aren't replaced with the Characteristic or Affixes from Weapon A.
You can find a list of all Offensive, Defensive, and Utility Item Affixes, as well as which Affixes are available to each class, below:

Barbarian Item Affixes
Druid Item Affixes
Necromancer Item Affixes
Rogue Item Affixes
Sorcerer Item Affixes
Changing an Item Affix
In keeping with the modular system of itemization in Diablo 4, you can use the Enchant function at the Occultist to replace
one
undesirable Affix from any Rare, Magic, or Legendary item with another. The bad news is that this replacement is randomly generated, but the good news is that you can reroll this Affix as many times as you can afford the Gold and crafting material cost. As mentioned before, Inherent Physical Characteristics cannot be changed through Enchanting.
When you are planning to imprint a Rare item with a Legendary Aspect, reroll any of your Rare Affixes
before
you apply the Legendary Aspect. Rerolling an Affix on a Legendary is significantly more expensive and requires additional crafting materials. Unique items cannot be Enchanted.
After the changes to Item Affix quantities in Season 4, Imprinting Legendary Aspects on Rare items is seldom viable due to the fact that Rare items can only have 2 Affixes. In Diablo 4's endgame, you will typically be Imprinting Legendary Aspects onto other Legendaries with better Affixes. If you are Imprinting a Legendary Affix onto a Rare item, be aware that this will not add additional Affixes. There is no way to increase the amount of Item Affixes on a piece of gear.

Legendary Aspects in Diablo 4
A
Legendary Aspect
is the special power found on Legendary items, as well as in your account-wide Codex of Power. Legendary Aspects show in orange text on item tooltips.
A learned Aspect in your Codex of Power
New Legendary Aspects come from two sources:
Dropped Legendary items can be Salvaged, at which point the Legendary Aspect is added to your Codex of Power if it is either a new Aspect or a higher rank of one you already have.
Dungeon Legendary Aspects are added to your Codex of Power upon completion of particular Dungeons. These Aspects are always the lowest rank available.
All Legendary Aspects can appear on dropped items, but only some Legendary Aspects are rewarded by completing Dungeons or progressing a zone's Campaign
. While Dungeon Aspects can be helpful while leveling, the fact that they are the lowest rank means you will need to hunt for desired Aspects as drops or by gambling at the Purveyor of Curiosities. Some Legendary Aspects, such as , only have one rank.
There are five categories of Legendary Aspects: Defensive, Offensive, Resource, Utility, and Mobility. Not all Aspects can be placed on all types of gear items; for example, Off-hand items and Pants can only accept a Defensive Aspect.
Two-Handed Weapons and Amulets increase the power of an Imprinted Legendary Power, though Two-Handed Weapons can only be Imprinted with Offensive Aspects. Since you can use any type of Aspect on an Amulet, you should always prioritize a highly beneficial Aspect for this slot.

If you forget which category corresponds to which gear piece, you can select that tab in the Codex of Power and it will show you the Allowed Item Types:
Legendary Aspects from Drops
When you get a Legendary as a drop, you can use the item as is or choose to
Salvage
the Legendary Aspect to put onto another item. To learn a Legendary Aspect and add it to your Codex, visit the Blacksmith and Salvage the Legendary item. If the Legendary item's Affixes are better than what you are currently using but the Aspect itself is not, you can Imprint an Aspect from your Codex over the existing one.
Here are a few essential facts you need to know
before
you Salvage:
When you Salvage an Aspect, it will be placed into your Codex of Power. Each Aspect in your Codex has a rank determined by the highest rank of the Aspect you have Salvaged.
You can then use the Imprint function at the Occultist to transfer that Aspect onto a Legendary or Rare item. The new Legendary you create will have the same Inherent Physical Characteristics and Affixes of the Rare or Legendary item you're Imprinting.
Most Aspects have increased power when placed on certain items.
Placing an Aspect on an Amulet gives 50% (1.5x) additional power to the Aspect's dynamic values, which is especially beneficial on an Amulet as all types of Legendary Aspects can go on this slot. Placing an Offensive Aspect on a Two-Handed Weapon increases that Aspect's dynamic values by 100% (2x), so place your Legendary Aspects wisely.
Aspects in your Codex of Power are permanent.
If you Salvage an Aspect from a piece of gear and it either was previously unknown or has a higher value than what was already in your Codex of Power, the new rank of Aspect is permanently added to your Codex. This means you can progressively upgrade an Aspects as you find more powerful versions, or unlock the highest rank available with a maximum rank Aspect and not need to worry about it again for the rest of the season. For Eternal characters, Aspects in the Codex of Power and their ranks are truly permanent.
Blacksmith Crafting Overview in Diablo 4
Legendary Aspects from Codex of Power
The Codex of Power can be found under your Collections and contains all of your account-wide Aspects.
You can farm Aspects for the Codex of Power by completing specific Dungeons or other activities, such as advancing the Campaign in a particular zone. Not all Dungeons award Aspects, and you must defeat the end Boss of that dungeon to be awarded that Aspect. Each Aspect Dungeon rewards only one pre-determined Aspect, so the good news is that you can shop around if you're looking for class-specific ones.
You can collect Aspects of any class on any character -- your Sorcerer can earn a Rogue Aspect, for example -- and these are available to every character on your account through the Occultist. If you wish to see Aspects only for your current class, you can check the "Show my class only" box. Hovering over any Aspect, collected or uncollected, will tell you which Dungeon you need to complete or what zone's Campaign to progress to earn the Aspect.
And, of course, you can also add or improve Aspects in your Codex of Power by Salvaging a Legendary with a new or higher Aspect rank.
Codex of Power Aspects may be used on any Rare or Legendary item as many times as you want, as long as the item type is appropriate for that Aspect -- as long as you can afford the Imprinting process.
To use a known Codex of Power Aspect, use the Imprint function at the Occultist to transfer the Aspect from your Codex of Power onto a Legendary or Rare item. This costs gold and various crafting materials, based on the Item Power, quality, and subquality of the piece you're trying to Imprint.
Again, when you imprint a Rare or Legendary with an Aspect from your Codex of Power, it retains the target item's Inherent Physical Characteristics and Item Affixes. For more information on the Codex of Power or Legendary Aspects, including Aspect lists sorted by type or class, please visit our guides below:

Unique Properties in Diablo 4
Unique items have the following characteristic:
Unique Powers are specific only to that Unique item and cannot be extracted via Salvage or Imprinted on other gear.
Unique Powers can only be found on Unique items.
A Unique's Item Affixes are fixed and cannot be changed via Enchanting. You get what you get with Uniques.
Unique Items Overview
Tempering and Masterworking Gear
You can add Temper gear to add Tempering Affixes. Masterworking increases the potency of Affixes on gear. Both Tempering and Masterworking are available at the Blacksmith.
Tempering Gear
Temper Manuals drop while participating in any type of Diablo 4 content. Temper Manuals contain a group of Tempering Affixes that can be randomly placed on a Rare or Legendary piece of gear with a certain number of Tempering rerolls allowed before you cannot Temper it any more - this is known as an item's Temper Durability.
Tempering Affixes, also referred to as Tempers, are denoted with the anvil icon on gear and will show up beneath other Affixes. You must have two different Tempers on a Legendary before you enable Masterworking for that item. Uniques cannot be Tempered.
You can find out more about Tempering here, as well as links to all class-related Tempering manuals:
Tempering Guide
Masterworking Gear
Items can be Masterworked 12 times; the price and materials required of each rank increase per level. The three primary Masterworking materials - , , and - are rewarded by completing The Pit. The exact material you receive is determined by the Tier completed.
Masterworking gear increases Item Affixes and Tempering Affixes on a piece of gear. Ranks 1-3, 5-7, and 9-11 increase the value of all Affixes by 5% per rank. Ranks 4, 8, and 12 will increase the value of one random Affix by 25%. When a 25% increase is applied to an Affix, its value will turn blue. When two 25% increases land on the same Affix, its value turns yellow, and the value of Affixes that receive three 25% increases will turn orange. In the image below, you can see the three Affixes that received the rank 4, 8, and 12 Masterworking bonuses. The icon to the left of Critical Strike Damage indicates that it is a Greater Affix.
If a 25% increase lands on an Affix that is less beneficial, you can reset Masterworking ranks on a piece of gear. Regardless of an item's Masterworking rank, this resets it to rank 0. Masterworking is an incredibly powerful feature that allows players to further customize their gear based on the priorities of their build. For more information on Masterworking, please see our guide below:
Masterworking Guide
Greater Affixes
When an item drops, any and all of its Affixes have the chance to be a Greater Affix, meaning the value will be 1.5 times higher than its standard maximum value.
Greater Affixes are found only on Ancestral Legendary and Unique items. Rerolling a Greater Affix at the Occultist replaces it with a normal Affix, and normal Affixes cannot be Enchanted into a Greater Affix. For more information about Greater Affixes, please see our guide:
Greater Affixes Guide
Adding Gem Sockets to Gear
You will see Gem Sockets on some pieces of dropped gear, but you can also add them to unsocketed gear by visiting the Jeweler. Adding a socket costs Gold and a . These are rare drops from sources such as World Bosses, so use these wisely.
The number of sockets you can add to a particular gear item is limited.

Starting at level 20, you can also start crafting Gems. Crafting Gems requires Gem Fragments, which you can receive as drops or by Salvaging Gems at the Jeweler. As you level up, you can craft more potent versions of Gems to receive stronger benefits.
