This Wowhead build guide for the Barrage Rogue in Diablo 4 Season 5 covers the best skills for leveling from 1-50, including skills, rotations, and and choices for the Rogue unique class mechanic, Specialization.
This guide also covers gearing strategies for leveling, including the best Legendary Aspects to farm from dungeons in both lower-level and higher-level zones. We also direct you to which Gear Affixes and gems are most desirable for the Barrage Rogue.
Barrage Rogue Overview in Diablo 4
If you are looking for the Diablo 4 equivalent of the iconic Multishot builds from prior Diablo installments and other ARPGs, then the Barrage Rogue may be just what you're looking for. This variant tries to distinguish itself from other Rogue builds by being a true Ranged build. Focusing on Imbuements adding bonuses to , you'll be a terror in both single target and AoE scenarios, melting foes with and exploding enemies with .
Barrage Rogue is a fun leveling experience that allows you to experience a boss killer, by utilizing , and an AoE room clearer, with the use of , all in one. is an incredibly satisfying skill for those who like the shotgun playstyle, and with an incredibly simple skill priority and rotation, the leveling process can't get much easier.
Strengths and Weaknesses for Barrage Rogue
Barrage Rogue is a fairly balanced class in terms of strengths and weaknesses. If we had to pick the hardest part of learning this class, it's landing your shots: since fires in an arc in front of you, not a straight line, missing shots both feels awful and absolutely wrecks your damage. That being said, however, not much feels better than unloading every single arrow into a Boss or Elite and seeing their health chunk down.
In terms of strengths, this build has quite a bit going for it - great AoE and single target damage, a mechanically satisfying playstyle, and good mobility remove the chore of leveling. On the flip side, requires a lot of Energy at low levels - we can mitigate this a bit with passives and time, but at first, you're going to feel quite starved.

How to Play Barrage Rogue
Barrage Rogue functions on very basic principles: should only be cast while imbued with or , and should aim to hit as many enemies as possible with each cast (or one enemy as many times as possible). These two guiding rules encompass the broad base of the build - while you can get into the nitty-gritty about positional requirements, using as a crowd control versus positional aid, and how best to maintain charges, as long as you remember these two rules, you'll be a force to be reckoned with.
This is a common rotation for the Barrage Rogue. The goal is to ensure that you're buffing at all times with one of your Imbuements. The rest of our skills are built around buffing and debuffing - whether we're adding survivability with , using to get out of dangerous situations, or inflicting Vulnerable to large packs with , every single thing we do inflicts
some
type of effect.
or - Depending on your needs (AoE vs. Single Target), cast against large packs of enemies or versus Bosses and Elites.
- Unleash , attempting to hit as many enemies as possible with the arrows.
- Make sure to frequently cast to maintain as many stacks as possible to ensure maximum damage reduction.
- can be used as both mobility for better positioning and situational crowd control.
- As a filler for when we don't have the energy to cast , to gain offensive buffs such as Attack Speed and Critical Strike Chance, and for damage reduction from .

Leveling Build for Barrage Rogue
This part of the guide focuses on the core of the build -- those skills you need to take and develop most as you approach level 50.
Active Skills for Barrage Rogue
This section includes the six Active skills you'll be using on your Skill Bar, in order of how they appear on the skill tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Heartseeker
(1/5)
Basic
Modifiers:
serves as our filler skill, allowing us to build Energy for while also granting us various offensive and defensive effects, like Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance, and Damage Reduction (), just to name a few.
Both and grant us powerful buffs. The Attack Speed allows us to minimize the time spent using Basic skills and focus on casting instead.
Barrage
(5/5)
Core
Modifiers:
, the namesake of the build, is our primary damage dealer. We can both AoE effectively and deal massive shotgun style single target damage using this skill, and everything we build is made to augment this. We have methods of inflicting many status debuffs to allow to shine, which means we get to focus on boosting its damage in other ways: building both Critical Strike Chance and Damage to allow for maximum DPS.
We choose our upgrades based on this Critical Strike premise - ricocheting arrows allow us to shred packs while also boosting our Critical Strike Chance after ricochets, providing a convenient feedback loop.
Concealment
(1/5)
Subterfuge
Modifiers:
is a very flexible skill. It can be used to get out of dangerous situations by applying Unstoppable, but it can also be used as a mobility skill. supplies us with a large chunk of Energy and is another source to apply Vulnerable to our enemies.
Ideally, you want to benefit from 's effect as much as possible by trying not to use it while you are at high Energy. afflicts enemies with a long-lasting Vulnerable effect. Make sure to get the most out of it by casting an imbued when you are breaking out of Stealth.
Dark Shroud
(5/5)
Subterfuge
Modifiers:
Our kit's single largest defensive skill, also provides a nice Movement Speed boost. Ideally, we won't be getting hit often as a Ranged build, so your uptime on shadows should be consistent.
Our chosen upgrades not only allow us to have a higher uptime on , but they also provide us with a significant mobility buff, accelerating the overall leveling process.
Shadow Imbuement
(1/5)
Imbuement
Modifiers:
Our AoE enabler, causes massive explosions when enemies infected by the ability die - and since we're shotgunning enemy groups to infect chains of them at once, you can see where this is going.
and are both excellent tools to mop up whatever the explosion didn't take care of; you'll be doing so much damage that enemies will almost certainly be Injured, and the added Vulnerability layer just makes them ripe for killing.
Poison Imbuement
(5/5)
Imbuement
Modifiers:
allows us to melt Elites and Bosses alike. The poison damage also grants us a big survivability chunk through the passive.
The upgrade grants us a huge damage multiplier due to the high Critical Strike Chance the build aims for.
Passive Skills for Barrage Rogue
This covers the Passive Skills you'll want for Barrage Rogue, in order by how they appear on the tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Stutter Step
(3/3)
Core
We'll be Critically Striking constantly, so this is a no-brainer; we'll have enormous uptime on this Movement Speed bonus, which lets us get where we're going at a much faster pace.
Sturdy
(3/3)
Core
With fewer innate defensives than other classes, Rogues need all the help they can get. While this passive is extremely useful, you'll want to focus on damage-based active skills first, since the best defense is, in fact, a good offense. They can't hit you if they're dead.
Weapon Mastery
(3/3)
Agility
provides bonuses to equipped weapon types on top of their inherent traits. For us, this means that
Swords
and
Bows
will be ideal, however, the most important thing is maximizing the Item Power (and thus damage) of your Ranged weapon, since that is what will be used by our skills. If you have a massive weapon upgrade in your bags, but it happens to have a different weapon type, use it!
Exploit
(3/3)
Subterfuge
is a great damage bonus for us, with a big damage multiplier against Healthy (high health) and Injured (low health) enemies. It allows for high burst damage at times.
Malice
(3/3)
Subterfuge
Another great damage boost, is something we'll want to utilize. While the vast majority of our Vulnerability comes from , it's worth noting that it's guaranteed to inflict the effect on explosion - meaning we're not leaving things up to chance to get the extra damage.
Shadow Crash
(1/3)
Imbuement
While an additional chance to Stun is always nice, we take for the skill it's gating.
Consuming Shadows
(1/3)
Imbuement
helps our Energy generation immensely. uses a lot of Energy, so any and all regen that we can get is a boon. You don't want to put too many points in here, though, or you'll find yourself overcapping on energy frequently; the points can be better spent elsewhere.
Deadly Venom
(3/3)
Imbuement
Another great damage multiplier for our arsenal whenever we cast with , which is one of our main damage sources.
Debilitating Toxins
(3/3)
Imbuement
Also activated by our with , this damage reduction is essential for us, and will have a high uptime due to our frequent Imbuement uses.
Adrenaline Rush
(1/3)
Ultimate
grants us an increased base regen rate while moving. We'll be moving a lot, so this comes in very handy.
Haste
(3/3)
Ultimate
No matter what we do, this passive benefits us - at high energy levels, we'll move faster to get from pack to pack and location to location; at low energy levels, you're clearly in combat, so our Attack Speed rises. Whether it's fleet footwork or flashing steel, speed is king.
Precision
(1/1)
Key Passive
The crown jewel of the build, grants us a large amount of Critical Strike Damage as a damage multiplier. On top of that, a fully buffed guarantees a critical strike.
Paragon Boards for Barrage Rogue
Players earn their first Paragon Point at level 50. Since this leveling guide covers up to Level 50, you'll need to look at our Barrage Rogue Endgame Build Guide for our recommendations on the best Paragon boards, Glyphs, and Legendary and Rare nodes:

Best Specialization Choices for Barrage Rogue
Inner Sight is an excellent choice for us in terms of Specialization, mostly because we really only have two options anyways and this one allows for energy regeneration. We don't use an Ultimate Skill, so Preparation is functionally useless, and while Combo Points are incredibly powerful by adding extra arrows to , extra arrows won't matter if we're too energy-starved to cast our skills in the first place.
If you're finding you aren't having any issues with energy maintenance, swap to Combo Points - the extra damage is significant, and you'll only need to get used to weaving into the rotation more often.

Barrage Rogue Best Leveling Gear for Diablo 4
Although you will depend on random drops for most of your gear, you will have a variety of choices available to you. You can also make informed decisions about whether an apparent upgrade is better for you based on other properties. You may even find yourself in a position of getting a build-defining Legendary Aspect drop -- for a build different from your own. In those cases, it may be worth considering changing builds as you level, since a respec is cheap at this stage.
Best Legendary Aspects from Dungeons
While you can't rely on getting a Legendary Aspect from a drop, you can find Legendaries in other ways. The good news is that there are Legendary Aspects you can acquire early on from dungeons, which are then transcribed into your Codex of Power. Aspects from the first three zones -- Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, and Scosglen -- can be farmed very early on.
Best Farmed Legendary Aspects
Shadowed Plunge, Hawezar
Underroot, Scosglen
Oldstones, Scosglen
Broken Bulwark, Scosglen
Buried Halls, Dry Steppes
Dark Ravine, Dry Steppes
Renegade's Retreat, Kehjistan
One of our best Legendary Aspects to look out for is which cranks the damage output of this build up to eleven, making for absolutely insane clear speed.
As to the other Legendary Aspects, they bolster our defenses, decrease the need for using , and further increase our damage.
Codex of Power Overview
Best Dropped Legendary Aspects
While we shouldn't have to rely on a dropped Aspect for a leveling build, these are some dropped Legendaries that are great for the build. You'll want to keep your eyes out for these.
The is a great addition to this build if you can get your hands on it. It allows to pierce through the first enemy it hits, increasing our damage output significantly.
As to the other Legendary Aspects, they bolster our defenses and increase our damage.

Barrage Rogue Best Weapon Choices
Weapons are important to all classes in Diablo 4, since all player damage output keys off weapon damage. Therefore, it's very important to keep your weapon updated by replacing it regularly. Beyond that, Weapons also have Inherent Physical Characteristics native to that weapon type, so there often is a "best" weapon for a particular build.
Imprinting a two-handed weapon with a Legendary Aspect will increase that Legendary's variable power by 100%. Be sure to use Legendaries here that can benefit from it; one that just gives a flat +2 to Skill Ranks isn't going to give +4 when put onto a two-hander. The key here is to look at the variable (the numbers in blue text with a range) to see what the effect will be.
When it comes to Melee weapons,
Swords
(Critical Strike Damage) are the way to go since benefits from any Critical Strike Damage on our gear. Disregard the weapon DPS completely, as none of our active skills is using the Melee weapon slots.
Bows
(Damage to Distant Enemies) are the Barrage Rogue's Ranged weapon of choice as we are a true Ranged build. The most important thing is maximizing the Item Power (and thus damage) of your Ranged weapon since that is what will be used by our skills. If you have a massive weapon upgrade in your bags, but it happens to have a different weapon type, use it!
Gear and Itemization Overview Blacksmith Guide
Barrage Rogue Best Leveling Gems
Gems fit into gear sockets and add bonuses depending on whether they are in Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry. Starting at level 20, you'll be able to combine Gems to upgrade them to higher quality and higher bonuses.
Gems come in various qualities from Chipped to Royal. While the gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. Therefore, while we list only one quality of gem here for listing purposes, you should always socket the highest level gem you can get and equip at your level.
Armor Gems
gems will increase our health and help with surviving one-shot abilities. % Maximum Life scales multiplicatively and is by far the best option in comparison to a few primary stat points. These will improve our survivability by a lot.
Weapon Gems
Weapon sockets are limited but extraordinarily valuable to the Barrage Rogue. Thankfully, we have three full gear slots to take advantage of, one of which can socket two gems.
s are our best option here, further increasing the bonus we gain from our key passive.
Jewelry Gems
While we recommend as a default for Resistance Gems, you should always check your Resistances to see if any of them are capped (these will show up in green text). If one or two other Resistances are capped, you may consider replacing one or more of the with specific Resistance gems to shore up weaknesses. If all of your Resistances are capped, equip s for the Armor instead.
