Shred Druid Overview in Diablo 4
The Shred Druid in Diablo 4 is ferocious, fast, and furious enough to take on even the biggest of bads. This formidable build dashes between targets while speeding through the leveling process thanks to the impressive Werewolf Skill - this is the build’s primary source of damage and an excellent mobility tool. This Werewolf is quite durable, and that durability can be scaled up or down, as needed. Wolves are fast, and the Shred Druid is no exception - with a little practice and a bit of elbow grease, the Shred Werewolf will outpace the rest of the pack.
has become an iconic Druid ability, and it’s not hard to see why - damage, mobility, and self-healing combined in one seriously deadly skill. The Shred Druid is easy to play effectively, so it’s a great build for beginners, but there’s enough nuance to ensure that a well-practiced Shred Druid will absolutely stand out. Our take on this leveling build revolves around debuffing enemies with , , and , and engaging priority targets with while using to maintain buffs and generate Spirit.
Werewolves are easy - point the teeth toward your enemies, and you’re good to go.
For information about the endgame version of this build, please see our guide:

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Shred Druid
This Werewolf build is incredibly strong and most inherent weaknesses can be overcome with proper planning. combined with deals excellent Area of Effect damage in a small radius, and and will bolster this AoE damage early on - we’re not heavily investing into either skill though, so their damage will start to fall off as you level up. This build deals relatively high single-target damage, but that can feel lackluster when your Critical Strike Chance is low. helps burn priority targets, while providing a reliable source of Immunity to break Crowd Control Effects. provides an extra layer of safety via Damage Reduction.

How to Play a Shred Druid
This Shred Druid Build is fun to play, and so easy even a Barbarian could do it! We’ve designed this leveling build to cater to players who prefer holding down right-click while taking bets on who’s getting voted off the island next, but there’s a lot of room for skill expression here. A solid rotation will significantly improve the damage of - we’ll discuss rotation further down.
We recommend for leveling, as Critical Strike Chance is essential, but you’ll swap it out for as you level up and your offensive stats improve. The basic rotation works well regardless of your Key Passive, and we've outlined that rotation below:
- Initiate combat by dashing in with
Shred
.
-
Roar
to cripple enemy damage.
- Cast
Ravens
.
- Cast
Creeper
.
- Tear through enemies with
Shred
.
-
Maul
often to generate Spirit.
Repeat rotation, as needed, using to escape Crowd Control Effects.
“PSA for Controller Players
- the Shred Druid can benefit from using a Controller over the more traditional mouse and keyboard. Players can take advantage of the controller auto-targeting system to automatically dash from enemy to enemy to enemy with, but be warned: if you get motion sickness while gaming, this will be a definite trigger!”

Best Leveling Skills for the Shred Druid in Diablo 4
Players earn a total of 58 Skill Points through two methods:
48 points for levels 2-49.
You start at level 1 with no native Skill Point, and you transition from Skill Points to Paragon Points at level 50.
10 points from Zone Renown.
By earning 900 Renown points with each of the 5 zones, you earn 2 Skill Points per zone for a total of 10 points. These points are account-wide and will be available to all alts when earned on one character.

Druid Skills
Leveling Build for the Shred Druid
This part of the guide focuses on the core of the build -- the skills that you’ll prioritize most as you approach level 50.
Active Skills for the Shred Druid
This section includes the six Active skills you'll be using on your Skill Bar. See the Skill Tree above for our recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Shred
(5/5)
Core
Modifiers:
is a 3-hit combo ability that deals huge damage on the third strike, it comes with a built-in speed boost, and it heals when striking an enemy - this skill is awesome on so many levels. It’s the namesake of the build, so max it.
grants Attack Speed to this ability and provides a consistent source of self-healing, but is the modifier that turns this skill into a leveling powerhouse - every strike will perform a dash when targeting an enemy. This mod turns a fast build into a faster one, and the added bonus to Critical Strike Damage is the icing on an already delicious cake.
Maul
(1/5)
Basic
Modifiers:
Druids are fortunate for having several strong Basic Skills available, but we’re recommending as the best option available to the Shred Druid. This one will ensure a near permanent uptime on , , and - too, when you start using it.
is an awesome modifier, and will help build enough Fortify to survive even the toughest battles. We skip a second modifier for this skill, as the points are better used elsewhere, but both mods are solid if you want to further improve the skill - can be particularly useful in building Stagger against bosses.
Ravens
(1/5)
Companion
Modifiers:
These flappy birds are thematically awesome for roleplaying as “Druid and Two Crows.” The damage is actually pretty good at low levels without much investment, but we’re not going to be relying on them as a primary source of damage. Bringing these guys home to roost will significantly increase the damage boost granted by .
is not bad for a prerequisite - the Druid receives a sizable boost to Critical Strike Chance against enemies recently pecked by the burbs. is our primary focus, and the reason we recommend over . The more Companions we bring, the higher our damage thanks to - don’t skip this.
Poison Creeper
(1/5)
Companion
Modifiers:
You won’t find this pocket-sized monster in the sand dunes of California, but this guy’s a real beast. The massive AoE damage he deals at low levels even without investment is impressive, and he’ll help fuel our . Though the skill damage will fall off as you level, the Immobilize and Poisoning effects remain, enabling and .
is a decent quality of life boost to the duration of the skill’s Immobilize, and is amazing for boosting Critical Strike Chance during a damage rotation.
Debilitating Roar
(5/5)
Defensive
Modifiers:
We’ve said it before, but this Defensive Skill is one of, if not
the
most powerful defensive ability in the game - drastically improves not only the survivability of the Druid, but also that of
all players
lucky enough to be slaying demons alongside them. Get comfortable using this skill to protect your group, and they’ll love you for it. This is personal preference, but we recommend maxing this impactful skill to lower its cooldown as much as possible. Consider one point here mandatory, but additional points can be flexed elsewhere if you’d prefer.
causes the skill to grant a huge chunk of Fortify on use, which can be handy. ensures that debilitated enemies are also Slowed for the duration of the ability - this is a quality-of-life selection to help ensure high uptime on . That said, Poisoned enemies are already Slowed thanks to , so is a solid alternative if you’d prefer the healing.
Lacerate
(1/1)
Ultimate
Modifiers:
Lacerate
has received buff after buff, and the verdict is still out on whether or not it’s as strong as it should be. We like this skill for a few reasons, but consider this option flexible. The Immunity granted while using this skill is amazing for cheesing certain boss and dungeon mechanics and provides a huge layer of safety while leveling in difficult areas.
causes hits with this skill to heal the Druid, doubled on Critical Strikes. will boost the damage of all Shapeshifting Skills for several seconds when Critically Striking with
Lacerate
, which directly improves the power of your .
If you’ve never tried it, now’s a great time to give this skill a whirl, but if it just ain’t your cup of tea, is an incredibly strong alternative.
Passive Skills for the Shred Druid
This covers the Passive Skills you'll want for Shred Druid, in order by how they appear on the tree. See the Skill Tree above for our recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Predatory Instinct
(3/3)
Core
A passive boost to Critical Strike Chance against Close enemies - what more could a Werewolf ask for? Max it.
Digitigrade Gait
(3/3)
Core
Movement Speed is always valuable, but is even more so while leveling up - max this one.
Iron Fur
(3/3)
Core
This powerful boost to Damage Reduction should see nearly 100% uptime thanks to . Damage Reduction is harder to come by these days, so don’t skip this one.
Ancestral Fortitude
(3/3)
Defensive
Excellent while leveling, since you’ll be swapping your gear often. Max this one as early as needed, but flex these points elsewhere when you no longer need the additional Resistance to All Elements.
Vigilance
(3/3)
Defensive
Truly top tier in terms of Defensive Passives for the Druid. We’re going to be doing everything we can to lower the cooldown of , so this is a solid three points for consistent Damage Reduction.
Clarity
(3/3)
Companion
With two Companion skills, stack this buff just before hitting with a supercharged third strike of . These points are flexible if you can’t be bothered to track your
Shred
combo, but we do recommend max points here.
Neurotoxin
(1/3)
Wrath
Definitely a one-pointer - the intensity of the Slowed effect is never substantial, and a single point is all you’ll need to ensure a high uptime on the effect.
Envenom
(3/3)
Wrath
This Passive is still a Druid’s strongest offensive option, and should always be maxed out.
Toxic Claws
(1/3)
Wrath
Thanks to this Passive Skill, will keep enemies Poisoned essentially 100% of the time on its own, thus enabling , among other things.
Quickshift
(3/3)
Ultimate
Between and , it should be fairly easy to keep this damage boost up all the time.
Natural Fortitude
(3/3)
Ultimate
This one should single-handedly ensure that you’re almost always Fortified. That said, this build is already stuffed with Fortify generation, so these points can safely be flexed if you’re comfortable hitting enemies with .
Heightened Senses
(3/3)
Ultimate
Boosts to Damage Reduction
and
Movement Speed? This one makes a case for itself - max it.
Lupine Ferocity
(1/1)
Key Passives
This awesome Key Passive has been overlooked time and time again, but we’ve given it a second look… As of right now, absolutely can’t compete with at the endgame, but for
leveling
it’s pretty awesome. Shred’s damage is highly dependent on Critically Striking, and this Key Passive ensures consistent Critical Strikes while your gear is trash - this passive is the reason we value Attack Speed over Critical Strike Chance early on, and it’s our top recommendation for early leveling.
That said, as you approach level 50, your Critical Strike Chance will naturally start to improve with your gear, so plan on swapping this out for when you’re ready.
Paragon Boards for the Shred Druid
Players earn their first Paragon Point at level 50. Since this leveling guide covers up to Level 50, you'll need to look at our Shred Druid Endgame Build Guide for our recommendations on the best Paragon boards, Glyphs, and Legendary and Rare nodes:

Best Spirit Boons Choices for Shred Druid
We recommend the following Spirit Boons while leveling from 1-50:
Deer
Wariness -
Take 15% reduced damage from Elites.
Damage Reduction is much harder to come by these days, so this Spirit Boon is a clear winner here. However, if you feel like the additional Damage Reduction is overkill, Advantageous Beast is a solid alternative when facing enemy Crowd Control Effects - if you go this route, also max out the Passive Skill .
Eagle
Swooping Attacks -
Gain 10% increased Attack Speed.
Avian Wrath -
Gain 30% Critical Strike Damage.
We’re recommending these Spirit Boons while leveling, as the Shred Druid prioritizes these stats very highly. Scythe Talons isn’t necessary early on thanks to the guaranteed Critical Strikes from , but you’ll drop Swooping Attacks for this one when you swap your Key Passive to . If you're struggling to survive, drop one for Iron Feather instead.
Wolf
Packleader -
Lucky Hit: Critical Strikes have up to a 25% chance to reset the Cooldowns of your
Companion
Skills.
This build doesn’t rely on Companion Skills for dealing damage, so this is a flex option while leveling. That said, this Spirit Boon is a huge quality-of-life improvement to the usability of and , increasing their uptime significantly - this helps ensure the effects provided by these skills are available during damage rotations. If you find yourself struggling with Spirit management, swapping this for Energize can help.
Snake
Overload -
Dealing Lightning damage has up to a 40% chance to cause the target to emit a static discharge, dealing 25% Lightning damage to surrounding enemies.
Overload is another flex option, so feel free to adjust according to your preference. We’re recommending this Boon to squeeze out some additional Lightning damage while leveling - this will trigger constantly thanks to . Masochistic is a solid alternative if you feel like you don’t have enough self-healing.

Shred Druid Best Leveling Gear for Diablo 4
Although you will depend on random drops for most of your gear, you will have a variety of choices available to you. You can also make informed decisions about whether an apparent upgrade is better for you based on other properties. You may even find yourself in a position of getting a build-defining Legendary Aspect drop -- for a build different from your own. In those cases, it may be worth considering changing builds as you level, since a respec is cheap at this stage.
Best Legendary Aspects from Dungeons
While you can't rely on getting a Legendary Aspect from a drop, you can find Legendaries in other ways. The good news is that there are Legendary Aspects you can acquire early on from dungeons, which are then transcribed into your Codex of Power. Aspects from the first three zones -- Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, and Scosglen -- can be farmed very early on. This Leveling Build Guide has been designed with that in mind - every Legendary Aspect that we've recommended can be added to your Codex of Power by completing a specific dungeon.
Best Farmed Legendary Aspects
- This Aspect is absolutely amazing while leveling, since the Life gain is a flat value. This is hugely impactful early on, but will start to fall off as your Maximum Life increases.
- Don’t skip this one while leveling, because you’ll require more Armor to maintain high survivability when fighting enemies that are higher level than your character.
- This Aspect provides excellent AoE in a small radius and can trigger the Spirit Boon Overload for even more damage. The damage may seem small, but you’ll definitely feel its impact.
- An awesome source of Damage Reduction that will be easy to maintain thanks to - if you struggle to keep this buff up, is an acceptable alternative.
- This is our recommendation of choice due to how often
Shred
Critically Strikes - is an acceptable alternative, but you’ll need to add a source of Unstoppable to the build.
- Despite several nerfs, this remains a consistently strong option for boosting the damage of Core Skills. Feel free to flex this one out, if desired.
- This Aspect will increase the damage of
Shred
against enemies that are Crowd Controlled, which will be most of them. This is another flex slot if you’d prefer a different Aspect.
- This once underrated Werewolf Aspect is now an absolute powerhouse for the Shred Druid - single-handedly solving Spirit management while boosting damage - this one’s a must.
For an in-depth look into the Codex of Power, please see our guide below:
Codex of Power Overview
Best Dropped Legendary Aspects
This build doesn’t rely on any dropped Aspects for leveling, but there are dropped Legendaries that are great for the build. You'll want to keep your eyes out for these. An Aspect imprinted on an Amulet also adds 50% more to the variable power (the numbers in blue on the Aspect description). Reserve the Amulet slot for an Aspect that gives you a good power boost.
- This iconic Aspect causes dashes with
Shred
to deal increased damage to enemies, but the positioning requirements are likely to put off most players. That said, if you like it, use it - it’s a strong damage Aspect.
- Keep a wary eye out for this Aspect early on in your leveling journey. A higher Attack Speed means more guaranteed Critical Strikes from , so this is a strong alternative Aspect for your Amulet or Two-Handed Weapon.
- This is a strong damage-increasing Aspect when paired with , and will typically outperform other options.
- This aspect is great and provides excellent safety, as long as you don’t mind the increased Evade cooldown. You can either replace or pair them together, depending on your Armor needs.
- Sometimes the best form of damage reduction is Crowd Control, so the low cooldown Stun effect from this Aspect can be worth its weight in gold. It’s a strong contender for your Boots or Helmet Slot.
+ - These two are strong when paired together if you happen to find them. Fish around for some additional Dexterity and Dodge on your gear, and you might start living through one-shots by simply avoiding them altogether.
- An excellent source of Unstoppable if you feel like you need it. This
can
replace your Mobility Aspect, but we’d recommend instead popping this one on your Amulet and using on your Boots.

Shred Druid Best Weapon Choices
Your weapon is often your most important item in Diablo 4 because all damage scales with the damage of your weapon. Therefore, it's very important to keep your weapon updated by replacing it regularly. Beyond that, Weapons also have Inherent Physical Characteristics native to that weapon type, so there often is a "best" weapon for a particular build - we’re recommending a Staff for the innate Damage to Crowd Controlled enemies affix.
Imprinting a Two-Handed weapon with a Legendary Aspect will grant a huge boost to its effect, increasing that Aspect’s variable power (the numbers in blue on the Aspect description) by 100%. We highly suggest placing here due to the massive impact it has on the overall damage output of , but , , and are all viable alternatives for this slot.

Gear and Itemization Overview Blacksmith Guide
Shred Druid Best Leveling Gems
Gems are a great way to further customize your gear - they’ll fit into gear sockets and add bonuses depending on whether they are in Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry. Upon reaching level 20, you'll learn about creating Gems at the Jeweler and unlock higher quality Gems as you continue leveling.
Gems are available in several qualities and range from Chipped to Flawless - weakest to strongest. While the gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. Therefore, we highlight our recommendations using one quality of Gem for listing purposes, but you should always use the highest quality Gem that you have access to at your level.
To learn more about creating and socketing Gems or crafting with the Jeweler, please see our guides:
Gems Guide Jeweler Guide
Armor Gems
Now that
Sapphire
gives Willpower, they’re the best bet in your Armor slots, and will increase your damage across the board. That said, if you’re struggling to survive,
Rubies
are a reliable alternative here to increase Maximum Life.
Weapon Gems
The Critical Strike Damage boost from
Emeralds
is a top choice here, due to our reliance on Critical Strikes - even early on, thanks to . The blue Gems are optimal, but feel free to use alternatives according to your preference.
Diamonds
are a fun option here to increase the damage output of your .
Jewelry Gems
Jewelry Gems are largely dependent on your individual Elemental Resistance needs, but the Resistance to All Elements granted by
Diamonds
are a safe bet here as a placeholder. Use whatever Gems you need to improve your lowest Elemental Resistances, and shoot for maximum Resistances (70%) in your current World Tier. If you find that you’re already Resistance capped from other sources, use
Skulls
here to boost Armor.
