All classes in Diablo 4 share many of the same strategies for leveling their characters to 100. While there are also class-specific strategies, the general leveling strategies will have a bigger impact on your leveling experience.
Players will also have different goals for leveling their first character in Diablo 4 versus leveling alternate characters, and these strategies will also be covered here. Understanding what improvements are account-wide will help you level alts even more efficiently.
This guide shares general leveling strategies, including how to maximize your first run-through of the game, understand account-wide features, plan your gear, and use items to your advantage. Again, your tactics on your first character will be different from that of subsequent alts.
How Leveling Works in Diablo 4
The maximum level in Diablo 4 is 100, but this doesn't mean you'll get 100 Skill Points to spend in your Skill Tree. Instead, you will earn or unlock different things as your level progresses.
At level 50, two things happen:
You no longer earn 1 Skill Point per level (48 total without Renown; 58 with Renown)
You will start earning 4 Paragon points per level, at 25/50/75/100% of a level from 50-100 (total 200 Paragon Points without Renown; 220 with Renown)
You can earn more Skill Points and Paragon Points through Renown, which is explained below.
Leveling Your First Character in Diablo 4
Resist the urge to level up multiple characters until you've gotten your first one through the main Campaign.
You may want to try leveling up many different characters in Diablo 4, but you should primarily focus on one to start. As many features open account-wide, it will be much easier to level up alts after you've gotten your first character through the main Campaign, which runs through all the zones of Sanctuary and Hell.
For those who choose not to skip the Campaign, rushing through the Diablo 4 leveling experience on your first character with power-leveling techniques, such as farming Helltides in groups, will work against you in the long run.
You will force yourself into having to backtrack through Campaign and zone content to open up the ability to use Mounts for improved travel or complete important class mechanic quests. It is also important to progress your Renown, which rewards extra Skill Points, Health Potion charges, and Paragon Points, among other perks.
Follow and Complete Each Act's Campaign
The Diablo 4 Campaign gates many things in Diablo 4. Prioritize finishing the entire Campaign on your first character.
To unlock all that Diablo 4's endgame has to offer, you will need to either finish all six Campaign chapters, including the Prologue and Epilogue, or complete the Campaign Prologue and skip the remainder of the Campaign. Unlocking the ability to skip the Campaign in one mode (Hardcore or Normal) will also open it in the other mode. You may choose to go back and skip the rest of the Campaign at any point after commencing; however, the choice to skip the Campaign is irreversible for that character.
In addition, there are other features gated behind the Campaign:
Ability to use Mounts (requires Level 25 if skipping Campaign on first character)
Some Side Quests for that character
Once you have enabled skipping the Campaign, all zones in Diablo 4 will scale to your level. Prior to finishing the Campaign, Hazewar and Kehjistan will be higher-level and won't downscale to a lower level.
There are currently six named Acts in Diablo 4, as well as a Prologue and an Epilogue. We have complete walkthroughs of these Acts and other sections, which can be found below:
Prologue: Wandering (Fractured Peaks)
Act I: A Cold and Iron Faith (Fractured Peaks)
Act II: The Knife Twists Again (Scosglen)
Act III: The Making of Monsters (Dry Steppes)
Act IV: A Gathering Storm (Kehjistan)
Act V: Secrets Bartered, Fates Sold (Hawezar)
Act VI: Dance of the Makers (Hell)
Epilogue: From the Wound Spilled
Note
: While skipping the Diablo 4 Campaign can result in a faster leveling experience, completing the Campaign on your first character is recommended for several reasons. Aside from experiencing the storyline, the Campaign introduces players to various mechanics and features that can be somewhat overwhelming for players new to the franchise or ARPGs in general.
Earn At Least 900 Renown Per Zone
Renown is a system for earning points in each zone by completing various activities. These earn both character-specific and account wide rewards:
The first three Renown levels require a total of 900 Renown to unlock (200, 300, and 400 respectively) and reward a total of +2 Skill Points and +1 Potion Charge account-wide
for each zone.
The final two levels of Zone Renown require opening World Tier 3 (Nightmare) and earning 2000 total Renown; these raise your Obols cap by 80 and give +4 Paragon Points account-wide per zone. If you want to go farther, you can do so.
Since there are five zones, this will add up to +10 extra Skill Points and +5 extra Potion Charges for yourself and for every alt who comes after you. These are incredibly important upgrades for increasing your character's power.
For information on how to build Renown by doing zone activities, please see the following guide:

Target Aspect Dungeons
Legendary Aspects are an important part of gearing in Diablo 4, and you'll want to collect as many as you can up front, at least for your own class. Some Dungeons award a Legendary Aspect directly into your Codex of Power the first time you complete them.
Some Legendary Aspects are random drops and cannot be target-farmed. Players typically collect the majority of Legendary Aspects for their class by the time they reach Level 100, but with many builds requiring one or two specific Legendary Aspects to fully come online, focusing on the Dungeons that reward these Aspects can be a solid move.

Find Altars of Lilith
Altars of Lilith contribute directly to player power by
permanently increasing a specific Stat for every character on your account.
Each Altar of Lilith you find gives you +2 to one of the primary Stats (Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, or Dexterity) or +5 to maximum capacity of Murmuring Obols -- account-wide. There are also four Altars of Lilith in Kehjistan that give +1 Paragon Points.
For more information about Altars of Lilith, including locations by zone, please see our guide:

General Leveling Strategies
These tips can be applied to both main characters that have completed or skipped the Campaign and alts.
Group for Experience
Players in a group will earn 10% bonus experience when they are close to their group members (5% for being in a group and 5% for proximity). This is the same for 2, 3, or 4-player parties. You will gain the 5% proximity experience bonus if you're near another player, regardless of whether or not you are in a group. While you won't always fight alongside other players in the open world, this is common during World and Zone Events, Helltides, and World Bosses.
There are a couple things you'll need to consider when grouping:
You must be in the same World Tier as your group.
The leader's Campaign progress determines the Campaign progress for the entire group. If you're farther behind, you will need to ungroup and catch up to that point of the Campaign or you'll get desynced and won't get quest rewards. This can cause several problems when trying to finish your Campaign.
Use Elixirs for Experience
Elixirs are consumables that give special buffs, including 5-8% increased experience for 15-30 minutes when consumed. These effects persist through death.
You can create low-level Elixirs starting as early as Level 10 - , , and can be created at the Alchemist for just 1,000 Gold and 5 each. Some Side Quests also offer s that contain 1-3 Elixirs. If you're using these for experience and your resources are limited, stick to the lower-level Elixirs that are cheap to make. Higher-level Elixirs have more powerful main effects and grant 8% experience, but the can be expensive to craft.
You can also get free Elixirs from certain Side Quests:
Traveler's Prayer - Level 7+ - Yelesna
Frostbloom - Level 8+ - Pallid Glade
Call of the Ancients - Level 15+ - Malnok
There are also many Side Quests that give Herb Caches containing crafting materials to create Elixirs. For more information on the Alchemist and other Side Quests, please see our guides:

Start at Higher Difficulty
When you create a character, you're given two options: World Tier 1 (Adventurer) and World Tier 2 (Veteran).
World Tier 1 is the default World Tier and has no advantages or disadvantages - this is the best option for players who are new to Diablo 4. Those who have experience with past installments of the Diablo franchise will likely want to start at World Tier 2: Veteran. This gives additional experience from killing monsters and more Gold.
Unlike the group and Elixir experience bonuses that give an across-the-board experience boost,
World Tier 2 only gives an experience boost to killing monsters.
Grinding monsters (outside Helltides) is by far the least efficient way to level, but since you have to kill a lot of mobs in all content, the extra experience is nice - but don't expect it to be the massive boost it looks like on paper.
Grouped players must be in the same World Tier to play and interact with one another. You can change World Tiers from the character select screen, or by visiting the World Tier Statue northeast of the Waypoint in Kyovashad.
Enter the Helltide
Previously limited to World Tier 3 and World Tier 4, Helltides are highly rewarding events that start at the top of every hour and last for 55 minutes. Helltides feature challenging enemies, plentiful sources of loot, and massive amounts of experience.
Helltides are an efficient method for leveling, though they can be difficult and rather punishing for new players who are still learning the ropes. For more information on Helltides, take a look at our guide below:
Helltides Guide
Complete Grim Favors
Completing or skipping the Campaign unlocks access to the Tree of Whispers, allowing players to acquire Grim Favors from various activities. These can be gained alongside the completion of Helltides or designated Dungeons, making this a passive, highly efficient way to gain experience, loot, and materials.
Once acquiring 10 Grim Favors and filling the status bar visible on the Map, players can return to the Tree of Whispers to choose a reward. These rewards are called Collections and contain gear for specified slots, Gold, crafting materials, and other items.
Tree of Whispers Guide
Complete Side Quests
Not only do you get Zone Renown and rewards, Side Quests are also a great source of experience -- particularly when you get long chain quests or groups of quests that can be completed at the same time.
Side Quests also reward Caches -- Herb, Salvage, Leather, Elixir, and Murmuring (for Murmuring Obols). These give you valuable items for crafting Elixirs, upgrading and crafting gear, applying Aspects and Enchanting at the Occulist, and other important activities.
Side Quests Guide
Participate in Zone Events and World Bosses
Zone Events and World Bosses are one of the few places where you'll regularly encounter other players. Since you get an extra 5% experience when another player is with you, don't ignore these when they pop up.
Zone Events show up as an orange circle on your minimap and show orange circles on the ground to indicate the active area of the event.
World Bosses are special encounters that occur on a specific timer. These are large group events, and since you'll get 10% experience for grouping, players often invite one another leading up to the World Boss spawning. Players will automatically join the event once it begins, so you don't
need
to create and/or join a party to participate and receive credit. World Bosses don't provide nearly as much experience, but the high-quality loot they drop can make leveling easier. The recommended minimum level for World Bosses is 25.

Complete Your Class Mechanic Quests
Most classes have a class mechanic quest that becomes available at Level 15. Since this contributes directly to player power in a very meaningful way, complete this questline as soon as possible. Necromancers get their Book of the Dead at Level 5, but get a quest to earn Golems at Level 25.

Explore Dungeons and Cellars
Both Dungeons and Cellars are instanced content where you can defeat powerful mobs to earn treasure and experience. The primary difference between these two is size, as Cellars are a fraction of the size of Dungeons.
Dungeons
are multi-room areas that can be quite extensive, but the treasure and experience from killing mobs, participating in events, and completing the Dungeon are worth your time and effort.
Cellars
are short, single-room areas that can usually be completed very quickly. Cellars can contain special events or puzzles that can yield even more rewards, so they're often worth a few minutes of your time.

Pick Up Waypoints
Picking up Waypoints shortens the time it takes to travel around Sanctuary. For example, one of the key Waypoints you'll want to pick up on the way to the second chapter of the Campaign in Kor Valar is the Bear Point Refuge Waypoint, located east of Kyovashad. This is the only Waypoint in this entire part of the zone.
Skip the Campaign for Faster Leveling
Once you have completed the Campaign Prologue on one character, you will be offered the choice to skip the Campaign moving forward. For those with extensive Diablo or ARPG experience on their first playthrough who don't care about Diablo's story, or for players leveling additional characters, the quickest path to Level 100 involves skipping the Campaign.
Skip Campaign during Character Creation | Skip Campaign on Character Selection Screen
There are some items you earn during the Campaign, such as and , but these aren't worth the extra time it takes to complete the storyline again. Skipping or not skipping doesn't affect your ability to use Mounts on alts once unlocking them on your first character, and Renown rewards and Altar of Lilith buffs are apply to all characters on an account. There are a few key differences to note for character who choose to skip the Campaign:
You start at Level 1 in Kyovashad
The Waypoints for each zone's major city and the Tree of Whispers are unlocked
The Tree of Whispers is marked on your map, and its features are available from Level 1 - this is a great source of experience
The ability to concentrate on high-experience activities such as Whispers and Helltides makes leveling additional characters that much quicker, easier, and more rewarding.
Gear Strategies for Leveling
Don't waste too much time trying to get the best gear while leveling.
You'll be changing and upgrading gear frequently enough while you level that most items will be replaced within a few levels. For most builds, "Best in Slot" really only applies to endgame play.
Salvage Legendaries with Aspects that are higher-rank than what you currently have in your Codex of Power. As the vendor value of gear increases significantly at higher levels, it's generally better to Salvage drops that you don't need at the Blacksmith rather than selling them.
