Blizzard has hotfixed Rextroy's solution to powerboost sockets in arena and avoid PvP Scaling penalties.
For some background, several days ago
Rextroy explained
how socketing
Opale Oscuro Versatile
caused him to deal less damage and take more damage in PvP, which is the opposite you'd expect from a Versatility boost. The underlying problem behind sockets and scaling is that every socket currently adds .6 PvP ilvl, and the stat benefits from the gems do not outweigh the performance loss triggered from the higher PvP ilvl.
In a video released yesterday, Rextroy found a workaround to benefit from sockets in PvP--you will have to socket your gear after you zone into an arena. This gets very expensive as the PvP scaling penalty is applied once you leave the arena, so you will have to keep depositing your gear in Void Storage to remove the gems, take it out again, and then resocket all gear before
every
arena match if you want to min-max.
Now today, Rextroy has tweeted that his solution no longer works. It's not surprising Blizzard has hotfixed it, as Rextroy has a history of diligently reporting bugs to Blizzard as he researches his videos. This isn't the first time a hotfix has been made in response to Rextroy's findings--take a look back at the
Inescapable Consequences Corruption debuff
.
The controversial issues surrounding sockets and PvP scaling remain, but we may be talking about another imbalance issue quite soon, as Rextroy has hinted another video on RBG and arena is on the way...
