Embers of Fyr'alath - Bad Luck Protection Items Dropping in Amirdrassil

With the weekly reset in North America, players raiding Amirdrassil early have discovered some interesting new tokens dropping within the raid.

, but exactly how they work remains a mystery... and perhaps even a little misleading!

Drops from Various Bosses
Although we have only limited information so far, it appears that the Greater Ember has a chance to be personally looted from Fyrakk, while the Lesser Ember has a chance to be personally looted from other raid bosses within Amirdrassil. In both cases, neither drop is guaranteed, they are not tradable, nor does every eligible Warrior/Paladin/Death Knight loot it at the same time.
Looting Bad Luck Protection
Unlike the Evoker legendary, in which bad luck protection simply accumulated in the background, these items appear to be some sort of physical manifestation of that mechanic... although not in a very intuitive way, considering that there's no apparent player-facing counter or tracker to tell you what it's doing. Using the currency engulfs the player in purple shadowflame for a moment, though there's no buff or anything in the currency tab to tell you what it's
actually
doing.
Aside from a little bit of damage and shadowy swirl, the Greater Ember appears to do... absolutely nothing.
We have figured out a few bits and pieces though. Players can use a special chat command to check currency info for another known spell, giving us information associated with a

This string of returned text gives us some information, though not really enough to make complete heads or tails of how the system works - only that it is some kind of progressive tracker related to the legendary.
Bad Luck Protection or Deception?
Interestingly,
there is a difference
between the Lesser and the Greater Embers, tested with separate players. The dump above is returned after a player has used the Greater Ember, and is the same which a player who has not yet been inside the raid at all will receive. However, using a Lesser Ember will change two important variables:

Interestingly, players can acquire multiple Lesser Embers from different bosses within the raid, although it appears that the quantity currently caps at 1, with no apparent results from using the second, suggesting that the "bad luck protection" has a weekly cap. While its odd that both of these currencies appear to have only a chance to drop as personal loot, it's possible these two currencies work in concert somehow and one simply is not displayed, but assuming these dump values are correct and we're not missing some other key piece of information, this leads to two other theories:
The Greater isn't working properly.
The Greater is a fake consolation prize, while the Lesser is actual bad luck protection for players who put time into the raid each week.
It's easy to believe something new and hidden is simply broken, but while the latter theory sounds counterintuitive, it makes a certain amount of sense - players who just login and kill Fyrakk each week may have a
chance
to get the legendary, but that chance won't increase over time, just like players who use 14 alts to defeat Arthas for a chance at Invincible each week without playing the characters any further. Meanwhile, the player who
does
spend time farming bosses and clearing the raid each week will end up with incrementally higher chances to loot that sweet legendary, effectively incentivizing "mains" and limiting the chances of the more hardcore players who might be inclined to make several alts of the same character in order to farm an advantage.
TL;DR as it's understood so far
Fyrakk has a default chance for any Warrior, Paladin, or Death Knight to receive the legendary axe as personal loot.
Defeating Fyrakk has a chance to award a
Greater Ember
that doesn't seem to do anything.
Defeating other bosses has a chance to award
Lesser Embers
that increase your chances to get the legendary. Multiple can be looted and used, but the effect appears to be capped at 1 / week.
Would You Like to Know More?
Of course this is just a theory until Blizzard decides to tell us how it works, which isn't always something they care to do. In the meantime, we'd love to hear from any players who do manage to find the legendary and whether they received any Embers beforehand, as well as those who find more of the Lesser Embers, as so far only one player has reported receiving it from Mythic raid bosses.
